I had the pleasure of reading Chicago: City on the Make in part, on a hot summer's day sitting in the back of a moving van with the door open, using a cargo strap as a seat belt. Riding along to the next job reading my first Algren made it an afternoon of twists and turns literal and figurative. As others have pointed out, this book is not a novel, novella or story collection, but a prose poem. They say it like that is a bad thing; as if any potential reader is such an idiot that the book should be printed with an I.Q.-based warning label ("Warning: unless you can handle Sartre in the original, this book might make your eyes bleed"). The book is a prose poem but so what? It's one of those rare and sometimes great books that can be read aloud for the language alone and for the most part, Algren makes every word about the cold wind off the river and the deep corruption count. When he is at his best, he makes the place sound positively holy--like something that glows.Chicago: City on the Make was like nothing I had ever read then and it is vastly unlike anything I have read since. I am re-buying it for someone else to read (a Chicago native, in fact) but I'm going to get to peek into it again before I give it to him. Chicago: City on the Make is more than just a book it is an experience, a way of doing things that only top-flight, internationally famous authors have the stones to write anymore. My experience of the book is old, in fact, so old, so that I remember only a few words from a few lines clearly and I am left with two major impressions in memory. The first is that it was a brilliant thing, fully worthy of being called "literature.'The second was that after an amazing job of keeping his prose flying high above what other authors could ever hope for, the thing bogs down in the end. Algren's voice becomes tired, his segues more and more stretched until there's nothing left of the energy you find in the beginning, but you soon find that you can't really blame him. Algren was not up to the task of finishing his amazing slender volume, but you can't blame him for it: it is certain that no one else could have done any part of it at all.

This is a magnificent prose poem-eulogy even- by Nelson Algren to his city. He takes you through all the characters and diverse cultures and corruptions that ingrained the Chicago he grew up in and are either being erased from the image the commercial big guns want to promote,or have just fallen by the wayside. There's a lot of visceral anger coming through in this book, and it is significant that Algren wrote it during the odious McCarthy anti Communist witch trails that was stiffling the freedoms of speech Algren so valued (he dumped his communist party interests as soon as the lack of free thought became obvious to him-now 'free' society was doing the same!)and distorting and promoting a mythical America that just didn't exist outside of a Disney film! The afterword and annotations in the 50th anniversary edition are vital to get the maximum from this book. Algren re articulates what his views are, and -to my mind-makes a postumous apology to his friend Richard Wright who he slammed for leaving Chicago for Paris and 'not sticking it out'. What could one black man who had suffered a life time of rejection and abuse do but say he'd had enough. I liked Algren the better for this acknowledgement.

Although I have lived in Chicago for many years now, I am not a native Chicagoan, and I have to say that the attitudes and visions of Chicago that one finds in Nelson Algren's are not held by most of the people I have gotten to know well in Chicago. But, then, most of the people I know are also not native Chicagoans. The swagger, the love-hate, the cynicism, and the love and civic pride that manage to emerge despite the cynical pessimism are very definitely found in many of those I have come to know who were born and raised in the city.Nelson Algren's Chicago was one that was more strictly American than it is today, less international, more Midwestern, more radical, less conventional. It is a Chicago that in many ways no longer exists. This can be felt in the book's narrative voice. Algren writes in a prose that sounds like Carl Sandburg drenched in Baudelaire, and the various sections of the book sound more than anything like the kind of stuff that Baudelaire would have written had he strolled the streets of Chicago rather than Paris. The prose is always unique, frequently beautiful, oftentimes stunning. There are definitely times that it will be all but impenetrable to someone not well schooled in Chicago's geography and its history. If one really wanted to get all the references and historical citations, one should consider reading Donald Miller's CITY OF THE CENTURY, which will clue one in on most of the 19th century and more obscure references. But in a sense, being able to identify all the names and places isn't all that crucial. The heart of the book is intelligible regardless. An essential literary work about one of the world's great cities, by one of its great writers.

Algren poetically describes how he sees Chicago; as a city that was and is a home for "hustlers" looking to make an easy buck. As the book progresses, he elaborates on what he perceives as the loss of edginess in the city's writers, as well as condemning a number of the other social maladies of the time (the HUAC being foremost among them).

thanks

I read this book as part of a class and am so happy that I did. Algren's language is delicious and the book made me smile. Maybe that is because I am a lifelong Chicagoan.

Great history.

I've read very positive reviews on the way this book is written but personally I didn't like the way it read.

Dan Jones, who gave is a first class account of the Plantagenet line of English kings, now turns his attention to the sprawling, difficult history of two main lines of English royalty, the house of Lancaster and the house of York. This takes up half of the fifteenth century, from 1420 to 1471. It is a terribly involved story, with many Edwards and Henrys, with brutal battles on remote moors, with beheadings – even some of which were marred by cleavers that missed their target, imprisonments, chicanery, and deceit. Almost nowhere do we read of a strong king who was able to draw the country together, to move on from its constant obsession with the concept of conquering pieces of what is now France, to lift the country on to a higher economic and cultural plane. Those efforts came later, beginning soon with the ascent of the Tudors, most importantly with Henry VIII and his daughter, Elizabeth I.Despite the high level of action and even suspense, this story is not at the level of Jones’ previous book on the Plantagenets. It suffers, annoyingly in this reader’s opinion, from a total disinterest in making the story easy to follow. There are detailed geneology charts but the blood lines are difficult to follow and, in some cases, use different names for the same individual. In no case are there any dates on any of the charts. This is a period of English history that is riotous and confusing and it is not made any more transparent by these charts. But let us put this aside. Mark it as a mild objection but not anything crippling. The main story is terrific and when Jones gets his history rolling it is nothing short of gripping. We are led through Henry V’s stirring battle at Agincourt (“we happy few, we band of brothers”), Henry VI presiding over Parliament at the age of two, Jean d’Arc’s rescue of the French army before her destruction at Orleans, the loss of France, Richard III fighting unsuccessfully at Bosworth Field and thus ending the weakening hold on the crown held by the Plantagenets since 1154. Think of this: the Plantagenets and their two main branches of descendants, the Lancasters and the Yorks, for all their weaknesses, had guided Britain for more than 300 years, taking it from the Middle Ages to the brink of Britain’s surge to greatness starting with Henry VIII.I liked this book because it says so much about the drama of English history. On the other hand, reading this book is frustrating for anyone not intimately familiar with the convoluted family tree of English royalty in the 15th century. There are very few hints as to the full dates that are being discussed, very little help in identifying the procession of English monarchs in one easy to read chart, with dates and very little to say about the country itself – its culture, climate, geography, economy, or laws. Overall, it is a worthwhile read but it can be a frustrating read.

This is a fair and balanced look at one of the bloodiest times in England's history. I really enjoy Dan Jones' style of writing. His books do not fall into the category of "popular" history but they do read like them. He truly brings to life the bygone era of which he writes. This book is rich in details of the men and women who took part in the Wars of the Roses. I especially liked Jones' treatment of Richard III. Jones simply presented the facts of the man, both good and bad, without bias. Richard III is such a controversial figure and there are tons of books, both fiction and non, that either praise him as a misaligned saint or the malicious sinner of Shakespeare. I like that Jones stuck to historical fact without judgment, using both contemporary and near contemporary sources. Overall this is an excellent book and definitely worth reading if you have even a passing interest in the time period. The book is clear and concise, which makes it easy to follow the tangled web of the politics and battles of the time.

I would give this TEN stars. This book was amazing. Dan Jones' writing style is absolutely engaging. It reads more like a novel than a historical book, which sucked me in. There was SO MUCH going on that it took me a while to remember all of the characters, but all of the info was completely digestible. It wasn't pretentious or snarky (as if we are all scholars of the Plantagenets) and it was accessible and just...FUN to read. I would, however, suggest reading Dan Jones' book The Plantagenets *before* this one, just to help you get into it and understand why everyone is fighting. (I read this one first, and I wish I'd gone in order - though still totally worth all of the reads.) This book makes me wish I'd studied this more in college. GREAT read. Highly recommended.

I read this after reading "Thomas Wyatt: The Heart's Forest" and so popular history came as quite a shock. Dan Jones leads the reader on a merry caper from 1420 - 1470 dealing with the twists and turns of the English monarchy. His primary theme is that an inability to hold onto the throne once won eventually allowed the downfall of the Plantagenets and the rise of the Tudors. This is a complex story; there was a lot going on. Dan Jones keeps the reader on track reasonably well.Despite accusations to the contrary I'm no medievalist (more of an Elizabethan) but I found the book to be well paced but a little light on content. The big flaw is Jones' reliance on secondary and not primary sources. His history is fine in terms of chronology and he takes no real risks with interpretation. The chosen style keeps the work flowing but I did find myself wishing for deeper dives into the detail and potential causation a little more.I suspect that it's wrong to chide Dan Jones for writing a popular history of the fall of the Plantagenets. In the end he did what he set out to do. I just wish the pace had been a little slower and the detail a little richer.

I enjoy non-fiction histories but some can drag in spots or become tedious recounting events, this is NOT one of those volumes. Mr. Jones keeps this very well chronicled version moving along with interesting sidebars, vibrant descriptive passages recounting climatic or dramatic events of this period of tumultuous English history. If you have an interest in the English aristocracy of this time, even the European continent's monarchies but have shied away from the 3 and 4 volume works this one by Dan Jones suits perfectly. Thoughtfully included are maps of the times showing lands held, territories in addition to nice genealogy tree's you can refer back easily. All in all very readable, beautifully written while transporting back into time of bloody intrigues, glorious yet savage battles, victories, defeats, incredible pageantry and at times a palpable sense of the times, the people and life in the 1400's.

I decided to return it partly because the writing is so small it is not easy to read comfortably and unforgivably I think some maps are split between two pages with sections that are not visible as the pages merge in the middle, for example the map of Manhattan. If the book had been twice the size with maps on fold out pages I would have loved it even though it would have been heavy, it would have been great for advanced planning.

Let me first say that I love DK Eyewitness Travel Guides. I try and get one whenever I go on a trip and am always really happy with them. Very detailed and colorful. Full of interesting pieces of information not just of the cities/state/country but travel information like getting there, hotels and more. Eyewitness is my go to book.Unfortunately, I didn't realize they didn't have a book on the state of Georgia or the south east so I bought the USA guide.. The USA guide is very big, very nice and includes information on all 50 states, but there are only four pages total on the state of Georgia. Really, four? I got more information from the Trip Advisor website then from this guide. Very disappointed, but I will keep the book.I don't recommend this book if you are looking for in-depth information on the state of George or the states surrounding it. Hopefully Eyewitness reads this and creates a worthy book for Georgia or at least the South East states. It deserves better than this.

Really small print. Hard to read, even with ample light and glasses on! A big disappointment. It mentions great places to see, but fails to give details that make you feel you want to visit. I went to Morocco and left this book at home.

The book itself was very informative and came with wonderful illustrations. It will be very useful for a trip I will be taking in the near future. I've never been much of a complainer, but the only problem I had with this purchase was the packaging. I ordered three of these books, which are pretty heavy and they were placed loosely in the box. Two of the books, which were intended as gifts, arrived in decent condition, but the third book, which I kept as my own, arrived with a corner very damaged. The damage was either the direct result of the treatment of the box by the mail carrier or it was damaged by the supplier. If it was damaged by the mail carrier, the extent of the damage could have been eliminated by more careful packaging. I still gave the item a five star rating because the book itself was very good.

Was very good--but wished it had more camps and details--that is what I bought it for. Not to talk of general history and habitats or animals. If it is your only and first book about Kenya safaris--then might be okay.I was looking more of Travel Guide across Kenya with specific recommendations of camp by camp by reserves or areas. For what it does--it is good.Just to general and not specific for me.

Wonderful book if you are able to read the minuscule print! I can't so I had to buy a page magnifier. The guide has a Lot of Great Maps and descriptions.

DK pictures are always amazing. As a reader, it encourages to preview and read more pages in it. There's a lot to see in the United States, and this book is a must have in your library for travel information.

DK Eyewitness is the absolutely best view of a country or region before visiting it. It works better than any book series I know to find what you need when you are on the ground. A great balance between photos and explanations and suggestions.

I was pleasantly surprised that this new book was pretty good. After reading the author's last series and being extremely disappointed I hadn't held up much hope for this new book. But in general, it was a good read. I got it from the library, however, wasn't going to chance spending money on her book.Pretty much the same theme done to death--young Amish person tries to decide to stay Amish or become English. The twist in this story is the other subplot of an English girl going thru similar struggles.I was happy that the author wasn't over religious/preachy as in her last series, HOWEVER, around page 204, she started with the religious stuff and started preaching for a good bit. As a Christian, I certainly welcome references to God and faith if put in a context that makes sense but this author tends to just go on and on making people sound like simpletons. One thing that really made no sense was that Amelia, the English girl in the story, has a father who is sick and this is why she feels so much guilt to continue to do what he wants her to do, but the author kept making references to his "illnesses", but didn't really say what was wrong with him--just didn't make alot of sense. Also, there were some odd references to Amelia's mother being some kind of secret novelist, which made absolutely no sense and contributed nothing to the story. I don't know if this will be part of a story in the next book, but since the title of the next book is The Bridesmaid, I doubt it.But all in all, it was a pleasant read. I just wonder, since this author has been cranking out 2 books every year for as long as I can remember, if that is why her writing, in my opinion, has gone downhill a bit. Doesn't seem to be alot of inspiration in her writing, just more of an obligation to keep putting out 2 books a year.

I preordered The Fiddler as soon as I read the last book in The Rose trilogy because I really wanted to see if I wanted to continue to read new Beverly Lewis books after the somewhat abrupt conclusion to that series, and I'm glad I did. I think The Fiddler is enough of a mix of all of Beverly Lewis' different books that it felt comfortable without feeling like a rehash. In this volume the main characters of Amelia and Michael encounter each other one night while each is trying to work through feelings of discontent with their life's path while not wanting to hurt their parents and families with their choices. This part of the book was actually really endearing to me because it happened almost immediately and because there was a lot of actual dialogue instead of quick conversations followed by internal discourse. It was delightful just to have two characters chatting through an evening instead of thinking.I've read most of Beverly's books, but some of the older ones I read nearly a decade ago at this point, so I don't remember everything about them...but I will venture that this volume reminds me more of those older books because they aren't following lives of dedicated Amish or Amish who are definitely going into the church. Instead, we have returned to a place with questions.I loved that in this book Beverly actually ventures into (through dialogue on religion) the fact that Amish life and the faith isn't all quiet, peaceful tranquility where life is wonderful all the time. I think a lot of authors of this type of fiction have left fans idolizing this lifestyle. While there are certain elements of it that are quaint and that us Englishers could choose to implement in our day-to-day lives, it isn't all tea and skittles and a lot of it is quite harsh and dogmatic. A dose of realism never hurts readers! Both Amelia and Michael were quite likable in this book and the potential for romance existed from the get-go but not in a typical gushy kind of way. It was more of a peaceful acknowledgment of contentment versus flutters and shortness of breath. Very sweet. When I read the last book in The Rose Trilogy The Mercy (The Rose Trilogy, Book 3) and left my review, I commented that I didn't like the abruptness of the ending after having been drug through a trilogy built around these people. With The Fiddler, that will not be a problem as this book is the complete story. While the characters in here may appear in other books in "The Home to Hickory Hollow" series, they are unlikely to be a focus as the main players went full circle. I have two speculations about who will be the star of the next book, "The Homecoming": Elizabeth or Joanna. However, it could be an entirely new person...always a possibility when an author is mixing up their writing formula. The only reason I am docking a star on this book is for a portion of several pages toward the end that almost began to feel like reading a brochure. I can't talk about it in depth here because it would be a plot spoiler, but an astute reader will see what I mean when you get there. However, I still highly recommend this book despite my nitpick.

I like romantic novels about the Amish because they are wholesome love stories. I have had an attraction to the plain life and admire those who exhibit Faith. This book introduced me to some classical music though as I would look up a violin piece mentioned on YouTube as I was reading. I want to hear more as a result of reading this. Well done! I loved the characters and look forward to reading more.

It's been a while since I've read a Beverly Lewis book and I had forgotten how much I love her stories. Written with such elegance and peaceful fluidity, her stories weave an intricate and incredible tapestry. This book is about Amelia, a once-child-prodigy now-world-famous violinist, who longs for things to be different in her "ready-made" world of violin concerts and touring. Nobody knows she enjoys fiddling for a while, but on her way back from performing a fiddling warm-up concert for Tim McGraw, she makes a wrong turn in the low-visibility rain and ends up stranded in the middle of nowhere. Another character, Michael, an Amish man, has one foot in the Amish community, and one foot out. His father gives him an ultimatum at which Michael takes off for parts unknown. These two characters from such different worlds meet when Amelia is stranded and sees a faint light in the distance. What transpires within the pages of this book is a beautiful story about two very different people from two very different worlds and what happens when the two of them collide. I can hardly wait to read book two! Thank you, Beverly Lewis, for such a wonderful book - again! And, as a world-wide concert pianist myself, I appreciated the musical technicalities shown here! And I was very happy to realize that you are also a very good violinist yourself!

I was going to give this book two stars but then I finished reading the book. In the end Shah sells a deceased neighbor's stamp collection and gives the money he makes from the sale to the neighbor's widow. He also earns the trust and respect of his household caretakers by holding a ceremony to expel Jinn's (evil spirits) from his house in Casablanca, his work as somebody who has escaped drab London complete. Other fun parts of the book are learning about Moroccan craftsmanship, trading practices, religious practices, coffee, and food. Shah observes and reflects and repeats, and reveals himself as a thoughtful person, which I also gleaned from reading his Wikipedia page. He wants the world to be a more peaceful place and works toward that goal. The reason I can't give this book four stars is because it could be about half the length it is. For example, in one sequence late in the book he describes in great detail how he buys cedar wood for construction of his new library. Hemingway is turning over in his grave. The other reason this book can't be higher than three stars is because it is episodic and formulaic. Here is the formula of each episode: Shah wants to do a renovation project in the house, the caretakers tell him it will be difficult because the house is haunted by evil spirits, his other assistant Kamal finds some back alley way to get the job done. Repeat that sequence and you have the book. Also, Shah has this incredibly annoying habit of ending each episode with a cliffhanger quote that is I suppose supposed to be amusing but is in fact irritating because the situations are never that dangerous or worrisome. He tries to build in drama where simple descriptions might do.Lastly, Shah must be a wealthy man. He isn't transparent about how much money is required to buy a house in Casablanca, employ anywhere from four to ten servants, keep up a local school through donations, renovate the house with intricate work, buy a car, and such is, but this is no task that an average person can perform, and as such the book leaves you with the knowledge that as long as you have enough money, life will be secure, albeit at times unpredictable due to the varying levels of dependability of those you interact with. It reminds me a little of the TV show West World in the sense that you pay a ton of money to have a "real" experience in an exotic place while all the normal, non-wealthy people out there have to work through their drab existence from paycheck to paycheck.

A confession: I adore Morocco. It is a place of dreams, beauty and ideas that are foreign and lovely. The food is fresh and fragrant with spices. As a tourist, a people watcher and a scholar, I have studied the place. So when I picked up the Caliph's House, I expected to return to the place of my dreams and spend a week enjoying the book. Instead, I met a new and different Morocco of workers, customs and household djins never before encountered. The story line involves a Londoner of Afghan descent who moves his young family to a rundown but beautiful estate home just outside a bidonville of Casablanca intending to restore the house to its former glory. Work proceeds, or not, based on a complicated system of beliefs and customs that we learn about through a series of work stoppages, destructions and contractors. As it turns out, the house comes with three longtime resident guardians who have much advice that varies as to usefulness and self-servingness. Some of this is laugh out loud funny and some provides deep cultural insights. I knew nothing about djins before reading this book and the author knew nothing about them before writing it. Nonetheless, if you have djins in your toilets or wells, there is hell to pay. This is a beautifully written book replete with cultural context and human concerns. It evokes a powerful sense of place. It is also by turns hilarious and deeply moving. In the end, it is a delightful book that is also insightful about working class Moroccan life.

This book gave a wonderful, entertaining account of moving from London to Casablanca. The obstacles the author encountered provide the reader with a window into life in Casablanca, with all it's checks and balances. Surviving the renovation of The Caliph's House is a nightmare that makes one appreciate the saner, if frustrating issues we western renovator's regularly encounter. Tame by comparison. An interesting, humorous, and enlightening read.
