I bought this because my 6 yr old granddaughter has sensory processing disorder. I was looking for a resource that would give strategies we could use to help her cope with day-to-day issues. There are so many good and practical suggestions in this book, I wish we had gotten it sooner. I would recommend this for any parent, relative, or teacher who wants an SPD resource that is easy to read and understand.
this book is great for understanding sensory processing issues. it was recently brought to my attention my son has sensory issues, don't know if he's on the Autism spectrum or not. this book helped me understand what this is, why it is, and how to handle situations and help regulate my son when needed. on the surface my son looks "normal", but when it's too loud or too noisy or we have to go to the dentist, it's a crazy anxiety ridden experience that neither of us know how to handle. great book with helpful techniques to understand and help my son.
I am a pediatric occupational therapist and I just want to express how much I LOVE this book as a therapist OR for a parent. It is my favorite resource for sensory processing. The sensory system is very complex and the authors do a phenomenal job explaining sensory processing clear and concise. The book is FULL of practical sensory strategies for parents. I refer to this book often and recommend the book or readings from the book often.
First, I'd like to say that I NEVER give book reviews, however, this book taught me more in 2 months than what doctors couldn't for over 7 years. After reading the first couple of chapters, I kept thinking this is my daughter, over and over again. This book will have a permanent home on my book shelf. Thank you to the authors for your dedication and sharing your stories and abundant list of resources. I will be forever grateful for this book!!!
If you suspect your child is sensory processing issues, this will be the book that helps you find ways to cope and create the atmosphere your child needs to blossom. We were going crazy thinking it was disciplinary issues, but now that I understand more about what he's experiencing inside his head, we can communicate so much better. Transitions and sleep are still the biggest challenges, but now we know (and more importantly, HE knows) it's not about him being bad or naughty. This one is a lifesaver!
This is a must read for any parent of a child with sensory issues. I really liked that it's written from both the parental and therapeutic sides. There's so much information presented and resources listed that a parent has almost everything they need to help and advocate for their child.
Still working through the book. Have learned a lot so far. Explains many terms I was not familiar with. Has given my wife and me many insites on how to deal with and help our grandson.
This book is very informative. My daughter was recently diagnosed with SPD and this book has been a lifesaver! I feel confident that I can now effectively advocate for her and help her get the support and additional sensory input she needs.
