This is a good one. It successfully goes from basic beginner to more advanced concepts.Let me compare it to some other Scratch books:DK Workbooks: Coding with Scratch Workbook --- this is a short book with only an introduction and the most basic projects. It would be ideal for younger children (6 or 7) or as a self-learning introduction to Scratch for kids (9-10). It should be followed up with another book.Coding in Scratch Games Workbook; DK --- this is another good one to introduce Scratch and create some fun games that build skills. Compared to Code Your Own Games, the DK book starts just as easily, but has more beginner and easy games and doesn't progress as far or as quickly.Coding Games in Scratch; DK --- this is a bigger book and progresses to more sophisticated games by comparison. Although it includes more, it also costs more.My kids are learning through a combination of teaching themselves through the book, experimenting with their own ideas, and some coaching from me. One of the problems that came up because of Coding Games in Scratch (DK) and could have come up with this book, happened when my son was attracted to a more advanced game and built it by just copying the code out of the book. Because he didn't fully understand it, he ran into a lot of difficulty and frustration troubleshooting it. I helped him with that, and then directed him back to some projects that build the basics.If you're not supervising their learning, you might choose a short book that teaches only the basics and then follow up with a book that goes farther, after they've spent about four to ten hours coding, which might be in a day or after a few weeks. Bowen's been playing a number of computer games during the summer, and would frequently ask questions like: "How come this boss monster could change his shape?" That sort of thinking led me to believe that he was ready for the next step: learning to program a computer so he could make his own games.I had originally thought of building a "game construction kit" out of something like Unity, but a few attempts at the tutorial made me realize that this was way too complex. I'd heard about Scratch before, but the online tutorials left me cold. It wasn't that I couldn't figure out the programming language, it was that I was bereft of ideas as to what to do with it that would make interesting projects for Bowen that wouldn't bore him to death. (For whatever reason, it takes a heck of a lot more than "Hello World" to interest a kid used to modern computer graphics!)I bought Code Your Own Games! with relatively little expectation that it would actually be good. It's relatively cheap, and was spiral bound so it would lay flat, and with Amazon purchases I figured returns are easy if it's a piece of junk. When the book arrived, Bowen picked it up, and with the alacrity of a child flipped past the "introduction to scratch" page and jumped straight to the first project.My heart sank when I saw that the book was simply of the format: "Step 1: draw this sprite. Step 2: drag this code to the script tab". Then I noticed that each piece of code was explained with text (not that Bowen would bother reading those!). The projects immediately always did something fun, and half of the project would involve drawing rather than coding (which is about right when it comes to modern game implementation). What was interesting to me was that Bowen didn't learn so much from the book's coding, but from finding "bugs" in the resultant game behavior and modifying the project so the game behaved the way he wanted it to!For instance, in project 8 (Catch the Donut), he noticed that even when the game was over, you could keep clicking on the donut and score points. So this became an opportunity for him to learn how to implement boolean flags in a language that didn't have them, and how to use those flags. In project 4 (Drive me Crazy), he didn't like that the car would move when the throttle wasn't pressed down, so he fixed the code so that the throttle would have to be down for the sprite to keep moving.The language is never formally taught. It's used and the child's expected to pick it up (which is great, that's how programming languages should be taught). Scratch is an object-oriented language with event-driven features, and the unstructured nature of the "drag and drop" code tab gets kids used to the idea that multiple things could be happening at the same time for a sprite. The environment is kind of crude, with copy/paste, etc not really implemented well, but it works. Everything happens online, but you have to manually do your own saves and backups, and more than once Bowen lost some work because he forgot to manually save.Overall, for a 5 year old, this is not a book you can just give to him and expect him to solve major problems. You'll have to help and coach him (including teaching him to make backups), and lead him through some of the problems. But for $7.12, this is a great introduction to programming, doesn't require a powerful computer, and has shown Bowen that the only thing more addictive than a video game is writing one. Highly recommended.

At first I was a skeptic and thought the book would never be able to teach a child anything; there were too many graphics, visuals, colors, etc. that would distract from coding. However, when I actually went through the first 10 game exercises, I was amazed at the approach. The book takes you on very simple 2-3 page game coding exercises, with each being a full game, and from game 1 to 20, there is a natural progression (you build upon previous code/games). In two pages, a child learns to "code" (if you can call visual programming coding), and a full game is created; this gives the child a tremendous sense of confidence. Of course, I've had over 15 years of professional software engineering experience, and that may have contributed to my initial skepticism and eventual affinity (I had to ask myself, how would I teach a child through a book, and could not really come up with something competitive and found it near impossible!). It may be that teaching a child to program requires a reference point like this book and a patient, experienced adult to step through; I am not quite confident of how much the progress was due to me and/or the book; nevertheless, the book gave me confidence in teaching and guiding a child. Overall, well done to Mr. Wainewright, it was well worth the investment. There are two things I did not like about the book: the spiral binding and the difficulty in standing the book up (at an angle) to look at and use it while teaching/learning. I do wish in the future, books like these that focus on children learning to code are more ergonomic in their packaging/binding.

Hidden gem! Awesome second book about coding games in Scratch, if you already have one like Woodcock's one. Lots of ideas even for experienced games-coder :)

This book is a superb piece of craftsmanship. The cover and pages are of high quality, the illustrations are beautiful, and there's that overall feeling of "substance" when you hold it (all book lovers know that feeling I'm referring to). But be advised, this is a handbook, NOT a field guide. The book is organized in "taxonomic order", not by physical attributes of birds. For example, at the beginning of Kaufman's Field Guide to Birds of North America, it tells you where in the book to begin your identity for a bird based on its observed physical characteristics (e.g., Ducks/Geese/Swans, Birds of Prey, Wading Birds, etc). So one can quickly turn to the appropriate page to begin browsing illustrations, based on what he/she spots in the field.To use the Smithsonian guide, however, one has to know, for example, that the red-winged blackbird is a member of the Icteridae bird family, and then know where to find the Icteridae section in the book to begin your browsing (and by the way, the family names are not in alphabetical order); or, one can look up the bird in the index and then turn to the appropriate page, but that assumes that the reader knows what they are looking for. In short, the book presumes a knowledge of bird taxonomy that many (probably most) birders don't posses. So this book is not meant to be taken to the field for quick reference; instead, it's more of a desk reference that a birder can use to learn more about a specific species once they're back home. Nothing wrong with that; but if you buy this book, don't mistakenly think you're purchasing a field guide.

As a reference work, this is top notch! As a field guide for bird identification, it is terrible! Birds are listed alphabetically, which is great if you already know the name of the bird, but if are searching for a name based on its appearance, good luck!

I usually don't have a problem with smithsonian books. I own many. But some of the photos are not the best. Some birds I could not identify from the photos in this book. Had to use a few different books to get an identification right. I think the color on some photos is a little off. But very informative and nicely organized.

It's a slow process, but slowly, I'm getting to understand more of the birds I see in my yard. I never knew so many types of birds existed! It wasn't until I was visiting some friends who had a good grasp on the different types of birds coming to their feeders, that I began to understand, Wow! God made so many types of birds and they each have their own sounds and habits. I'm glad I'm being introduced to the wonders of God's vast creation.

this is the third book I have purchased the pictures are detailed the format is correct I like the hand book style. my friends come to my house that's the firs book the want to look at so I gave one to my girl friend and my mom they know all about birds now. I have purchased Insects and trees and now feel knowledgeable about every thing here in long island . I just wish Smithsonian hand book would write more hand books There are not enough I would buy them all plus thanks to amazon I think we live in the best time to buy books ever It is so easy to buy books and they are great prices

I was looking for a basic bird identification book--I'm a REAL novice when it comes to birdwatching. After looking at the various Amazon offerings and reading reviews, I decided on the Smithsonian Handbook for three reasons: 1. good reviews, 2. from the Smithsonian--can't go wrong there!, and 3. published by DK. I have many DK travel guides and they are simply spectacular. Well, this book contains a wealth of information and I was not disappointed. It is a good quality book, but probably too large for field use. It has excellent pictures of birds and detailed information about habitat, coloring, songs etc. Very well done, indeed! It's not a basic book, but one I can grow with.

This book is one of many that my Grandson is studying to help him understand the Birds of North America. He found this book fun. We live not far from a nesting habitat in the swamps of South Louisianaso he likes to see the birds during nesting. Also there are times when we see birds that we have not seen for a while passing through during their life of travels.

This was a gift for my friend, she loved it. The only thing was that the corners of the book were a little bent, I didn't have time to return it and get a new one so I kept it, that is why my rating is a 4 and not a 5.

For $20 I expected this to be a hardback book, but it's not.

Would give less stars if possible. Adding a character name to a tequila sunrise does not make it a new drink. Honestly so shameful and pathetic.

Bought this gift for my sister for her birthday, much cuter than anticipated. There were picture on every recipe, some were generic recipes, some were unique recipes, but all of them had cute little quotes relating the drink to the book.

Sonja's dedication to the field of happiness shows in this work recommended to me by my therapist. Since reading the "9 Choices of Happiness: How We Choose to be Happy," awhile ago, I've wanted to know more about what I can do to ensure my own happiness. Sonja provides that with "The How of Happiness".I seem to have a low (and high) set point due to genetics. In other words, I have a mood disorder. I've sought for methods to smooth that out and have a more normal and even happy life. Sonja is dedicated to helping all people, not just those with mood disorders. I saw from her work, which I devoured in just a few days, that I could potentially achieve increasing levels of happiness beyond what I had ever had before.I transcribed her twelve areas of activity into Goalscape, a tool I use to set and achieve goals. Goalscape uses concentric circles to display goals and sub goals. Twelve areas fit around the circle like numbers on the face of a clock. At the center is my central goal, "A Happy You". I realized perhaps for the first time, that happiness was more dependent on what I did than a chemical from a bottle. Certainly good medication or supplements can be important, but there is only so much they can do.So much of happiness depends on what we do with our lives. Sonja gives suggestions that can guide goal setting and help me get (and stay) happy that much faster and inexpensively. She does not advocate a particular faith, but she explains the role of religion and spirituality in increasing happiness. She talks about how we become inured to good things around us and need to overcome that through gratitude and savouring joys. If we don't take time to slow down and be mindful, we can miss joys in our lives. Over the past year I've started practising meditation, and she explained how this practice can promote happiness, which gives me incentive to continue and make it more regular. I've also started a daily practice of Bible reading.She explains that many of her suggestions sound like common sense and have been around for millennia but have only recently been supported through scientific experiments. She herself is involved in happiness research which gives her voice that much more credibility. I have yet to experience the full benefit of her work because many of the practices she advocates work over a period of time. In our current world, it is sometimes difficult to be optimistic, but she fully explains the benefits of predicting a favourable outcome. I have decided to make happiness my number one value.Material things can bring short term benefits, but we quickly become inured to improvements in our circumstances. However, a change in our daily activities can produce a great and quick change in our level of happiness. Sonja explains how building relationships and social interaction can help promote happiness. Being a loner, I've struggled with this. A new romance started early this year has budded into a relationship that has the potential to be lasting.For the past year I've programmed an app that analyses daily activities from check lists. I have noticed that when I score and analyse my daily check lists, it promotes my happiness. I was not sure why. After reading Sonja's book, I discovered that many of the items on my check lists were activities she suggested from the scientific literature that promote happiness. When I do more of them in a day, a greater level of happiness is achieved. So I am dedicating myself to continue with my check lists, even on days I don't feel like doing them. For awhile this past year, actually several times, I let my check lists slide. Upon encouragement from a friend who has seen how much of a difference my check lists make, resuming them has almost instantly restored me to happiness and my former activity level. Committing to goals itself is one area Sonja mentions in her book.Sonja leaves it up to the reader to select specific activities and choose which areas of the twelve to work on. Some attention to each of the twelve areas is beneficial, but of course it works to prioritize what gets focused on first. Action is the key. With my check lists I can keep more things in scope and can work on most of the twelve areas simultaneously. I may sound too analytical about being happy, but I have discovered that happiness is best not merely left to chance. I want to consistently produce happy feelings and am willing to implement what science has discovered about the human potential for producing those feelings.You may wonder if I have become happy. I am discovering tools that help me produce happiness more consistently, more often, and more deeply. I am discovering tools that bring me back when I dip into depression. Have I fully beat depression? No. I would love to say that I have. I still have a mood disorder. But I am optimistic about my ability to deal with it. The fear of being overcome by it is much less. I think my optimism will increase as I continue to apply the principles I've learned in Sonja's book. More and more, I tell myself, "I am happy!" Thank you, Sonja, for your dedicated efforts to help as many people as you can.

It's cool to see a book that talks about solutions you can actually DO, rather than trying to think about your problems to death. These are specific practices a person can implement in their life which have been found, through experimental studies, to be linked to higher levels of happiness. The recommendations in the book are based on actual experiments, instead of someone on their soapbox spouting philosophies they think will help people. Fabulous book!

Sonja Lyubomirsky's book is one of the most thorough (sometimes a little too thorough!) presentations of the inspiring new science of Positive Psychology. Positive Psychology investigates the causes and practices of human happiness, rather than the origin and treatment of abnormal psychology. Martin Seligman was one of the main founders of the movement.As Lyubomirsky explains in the chapter "The Fifth How: Habit," the successful practice of Positive Psychology requires establishing positive habits. Because of our internal resistance, however, habits aren't easy to create. Not included in Lyubomirsky's book are two exciting discoveries in psychology that can help us overcome this resistance: The first technique is to commit ourselves to only a *tiny step* toward the desired behavior, which surprisingly often dissolves our resistance and leads us to spontaneously continue performing the positive action. Harvard instructor Tal Ben-Shahar, Ph.D., said that this approach is the single most important technique to emerge from research on procrastination.The second technique is to track the "chain" or "streak" of days on which we complete the desired habit (or at least the tiny step toward that habit). Our reluctance to break the chain forms a second level of motivation to help us establish the habit.To help busy people create happiness habits, and to translate happiness theory into practice, I created a free iPhone app called "Mini Steps: End Procrastination, Build Good Habits" ( tinyurl.com/GoodHabitApp ). I think the app is a great companion to Lyubomirsky's book, and I'd love to get your feedback on it.

I'm a skeptic on "how to" books as well as self-help books, but this was different. This was a book required for a positive psychology course I took last semester. Honestly, I loved it as a read. The personal stories allow readers to connect to the characters, which makes readers realize that perhaps there's something to the set point theory of happiness and the 40% of which we have control. I'm still working on the practice, but this definitely added a few tools to my positive psychology practices.

I really enjoyed this book. This is the second book in the Fallen series. It really delivered more on how the main protagonist, Luce, is dealing with the new realization of her "story" and her struggles to try to understand who she is and who she can trust. This books helps to unfold Luce's struggles with discovering who she is and how her life became to be like this. This book deals with Luce's questions on her past. I love the romance in this book series and I love the story building with the different types of characters. It is a must read for anyone who enjoys love stories that span the test of time. I will definitely be continuing this series

Torment, the second book in Lauren Kate's Fallen series, picks up with Luce leaving Sword & Cross and moving (without her parents' knowledge) across the country to the exclusive Shoreline School where she will be supposedly safe from those enemies who want to see she and Daniel parted forever. Luce finds herself being kept in the dark as Cam and Daniel combine forces to fight the Fallen, and she doesn't take it lightly; but when she discovers that Shoreline is a haven for the Nephilim (offspring of a human and an angel), she feels less alone. With the help of her roommate Shelby and new friend Miles, Luce begins to take control of the shadowy Announcers that have plagued her, and also begins attending exclusive classes designed to educate the Nephilim. But the biggest change? Luce becomes unsure of her relationship with Daniel after all his secrecy and the constant bickering between them.For the most part, I absolutely loved Torment. I loved the new characters, including Miles; while as a romantic I naturally want to see Luce end up with Daniel, I can see the appeal of Miles and I like that I'm torn between the two. Shelby is too much fun, and I also enjoyed the additions of Francesca and Steven as teachers (but do I detect something more sinister in those two? Hmmmm....).What works in Torment works really, really well. There is quite a bit of bickering between Luce and Daniel, and the frustration between them is mounting. But when they work as a couple, they truly work. There were moments when I wished the action would move on a little more quickly, but I was enthralled with the Announcers and the way they can take Luce into the past. As with any sequel, I also have to remind myself that I'm not in charge; it's all up to the author and where she wants to take us. And so far, I'm right along for the ride. Passion, the next in the series, is already pre-ordered and I'm revved up for it.

I gotta say that this book was a little pointless but necessary. What I mean by pointless is that nothing at all really happens to change the storyline, nothing big happens threw out 89% of the book. What I mean by necessary is that this book leads up to what happens in the third book Passion and this book also tells us what the announcers can do and how Luce figures out how to use them. I was a little sad cause I wanted to learn more about Daniel and more about their relationship and their past (however we learn this in Passion) but sadly all we get from them in this book is arguments and I thought for sure they weren't gonna make it but was glad when they did. Even though I think this book was a little pointless it wasn't boring it was really a good book that I finished this in two sittings (and this book is lengthy) the climax of this book really doesn't happen till there are what like a hundred pages left but with that being said the ending was very satisfying and makes you wanna jump into Passion (which so far is a really good book completely in love with it) I do like Torment and would recommend this book. Torment will leave you crying out for Passion. By the way Miles has to go away leave Luce alone she belongs with Daniel :).

Lauren Kate's 2nd installment in her Fallen series picks up right after Fallen. Luce has been left by Daniel at SHoreline. At Shoreline, Luce meets fellow Nephilim. While at Shoreline, Luce can not understand why Daniel has left her there, without any knowledge or further information. However, she soon learns more about the Shadows that have been plagueing her her whole life. Against her teachers' orders, and Daniel's orders, Luce searches further into the Shadows with her new Nephilim friends. During this journey Luce finds herself questioning her relationship, in the present with Daniel. She knows she loves him and has throughout all her lives, but wonders if their relationship is right in their present life. Luce finds that there may not be a black and white world at all, that wrong and right are not as clear as she once believed....One of the things I liked most about Lauren Kate's writing is that she doesn't jump around - she details events as they happen. Her details also allow you to fell as if you are Luce herself, going through her actions and feelings.Luce is also forced to grow up - she is left on her basically by Daniel and left to find truths and lies by herself. She is more human in this installment. She questions people, relationships, and the world around her like teenage girls really do; she doesn't take anything at face value.I was a bit agrivated by Daniel and by the ending. I wanted to scream at Daniel everytime he visted Luce at Shoreline. I never understood, even at the end, why he can't be completely honest with Luce! The ending also seemed to simple and rather abrupt. But alas, we know Luce's journey will continue in Passion. I cannot wait to see what lies in store for Luce and Daniel.
