We just finished this for book club. Some members had read other Erdrich books, but i wasn't even aware of her writing. I loved it. Spiritual, sometimes funny wedded to historical facts. Dual nature of good versus evil. Spiritual nature of Indian culture versus faithful Catholicism. What it is to be male or a female. A wonderful story teller. Criticism from two book club members was that they didn't like the 'magical realism', but for me that was what made it so special. A wonderful writer, great story teller. I was inspired to buy her collection of short stories, My only problem was remembering all the names, especially since most characters had two names, Ojibwe and English, but don't be put off because of that. You will be swept along by the creative story telling.

I have only recently discovered Louise Erdrich. And now I am bingeing!! The writing is divine, her way with words is uncanny and the stories within the stories, weaves an intricate and beautiful tale. And the characters are huge, vibrant, alive and corrupt! And human. This should be one of the 100 books you MUST read before you die.........

I had not realized that I had missed reading this book... wow, superb, to say the least. What an interesting, touching story, so poetically told, and of course, you will recognize some of the characters she has followed along the way.

This is a suburb writer and a deep and entrancing story. It is about American Indians in North Dakota and a woman who becomes central to the community of Indians. It's a thinking person's story,filled with the reality of Reservation life and late 19th century ways. The characters become very real, and in fact, it is the kind of book where I end up missing the main characters. I recommend this book to those with a historical interest, and those who want to really good and interesting and unusual story, that is absolutely believable!I think think Louise Erdrich is one of Americas best writers right now.

Perhaps the best book I have read this year. Louise Erdrich creates an incredible plot that addresses gender, church politics, spirituality, forgiveness, and the cohesion of Christianity and the way of the Ojibwe Indians. The Native American storytelling and post-modern style of writing was truly enjoyable to read.

The premise of this story is startling -- a woman who takes on the role of a priest serving the Indian village of Little No Horse. Her life is followed as both priest and woman. The characters are exquisitely developed, with all their flaws and gifts. The writing is powerful and original. In the end, the story is about love, in all its forms. This is the third Eldrich novel I've read, and none has disappointed me. She is a deeply gifted writer.

This book was brought to our club by a member who loves Native American themed books, a genre that I will read but not seek out on my own. So, I wasn't anticipating loving it as much as I did. Without providing a synopsis of this book that you can get from editorial and reader reviews already here, I just want to say that this is one of those really satisfying literary works for people who crave beautiful language, rich imagery and a strong, emotional connection to the characters. Erdrich is off the charts on all three. Never contrived, and often humorous, this book is now on my A-list for recommendations. I just loved it.

Absolutely brilliant novel that was earnestly recommended to me by a friend who's reading list would fill a semi. The events are clearly implausible, but she builds a fascinating tale of turning a life of seemingly insurmountable struggle into something meaningful. And at just the right times, it will toss you into hysterical laughter.

I was in business in the mid-1990s and understanding market caps and the importance of service agreements would have generated greater cashflow to grow my add-on replacement and service business by hiring more people. I have been in the HVAC industry for 8+ years working for manufactures and distributors selling multiple brands of HVAC equipment from Goodman to RHEEM and I wish every contractor, small or large would read this book. It covers a lot of concepts that most contractors overlook and get wrong including pricing, overhead, people management, and financial statements. Most companies I have worked with are great HVAC technicians but are always missing some business aspects that cost them money. If you own your own HVAC business or are thinking about starting one, I would recommend this read and start picking up the money left on the table.

As a new territory manager in the HVAC business with no industry experience this book has really helped me establish great relationships with current and new customers.Using the information in Chapter 2 as an introduction of the book as a whole, my customers have been able to verify that they are making money on jobs and in one case using these principles a customer realized they were leaving close to $600 on the table per job.Knowing what this information can do for my contractor customers I am making sure each contractor has a copy of this book and I will be helping them implement many of the financial concepts In it.

Great short book that didn't necassarily tell me what I was doing wrong but instead told me all of the big things I was not even doing! This book is a great little handbook for those of us that are great at the trade side of the business but not so great on the business side of it. Easy read and short enough to not get confusing or forgotten.

I recently attended a dealer meeting in which Scott was the Keynote speaker. He also had a break out session and went into more detail about the book. I got the book that day started reading when I got home and couldn't put it down. This is a great read for any HVAC company small or big, new or old! I wish I would have had this book 7 years ago when I bought my father out, I would be way further ahead now.

As a marketing manager for an HVAC distributorship I thought this book would be very helpful for an HVAC contractor. The book was easy to read and the authors made the financial concepts easy to understand. I especially liked the marketing section to grow your replacement and service business. If a contractor wants to grow their business profitably this book shows the way.

This book is not fully legible on the Kindle; the text on the boxed sections [which are apparently of particular importance] is cut off by the box margins, so the paragraphs become unintelligible, which essentially renders the book, useless. I would like a full refund.

As a long time Exercise Physiologist, I have consistently found this book to be absolutely indispensable, and required reading and reference for all exercise professionals.

Great reference to use once certified and training clients! I used this book along with the ACSM's Resources for the Personal Trainer and this study guide ACSM Certified Personal Trainer Exam Prep: 2018 Edition to prepare for my CPT exam and passed! I highly recommend both books to help prepare for the exam and to keep as for reference once certified.

Great book, a little smaller than the last edition. As with any small paperback textbook, it's hard to open without bending the cover, and it never stays open anyway. I brought my copy to my local Kinko's to have it cut and spiral bound and covered for about $6. It's way easier to leaf through and set down without losing the page. Definitely recommended.

This edition has pretty much the same information as the last edition, but the layout is much easier on the eyes. The headings and format makes the information easier to follow.

As advertised. Will encourage buying used books from seller. I attached real pictures. Not the spiral book so I expected heavy bending but it wasn’t. Read thru. Minor blemishes that could be print issue. See photos for example.

Edit: I contacted amazon and explained what happened and how I wasn't happy and they are giving me a full refund. Amazon consumer service is amazing and I am so glad that they are able to do this. Star increase because of them.I thought that this book was a spiral version but I learned that it wasn't. I ended up getting it cut and made into a spiral book and now I can't even see all the words. Not happy at all and I wish I could return the book for a refund or to get the version that I truly wanted but it is probably too late now.

STRAIGHTFORWARD AND EASY. I am a type 2 diabetic and I do not take very good care of myself. This makes it easy to be more accountable to myself. There are some things that I eat often, this books makes it easy to go back and copy the nutrition from a previous meal. I appreciate the fact that it is JUST a journal, you should know what your goals are before beginning, but that makes it more flexible.

So far I am finding this tedious to keep up with. Without saving every label of every food item I eat, I often don't know what the nutrition info is for each item unless I go to a fitness app I have on my phone to find the info, which I could just use in the first place instead of this book. This book does exactly as it describes. I am only taking away one star because after using this for a few days, I just personally find the app I use to be much easier in keeping up with my macros. However, if you are someone who does better writing things down & are fairly organized, this is a great option.

Excellent book. I just had gastric bypass, and this book allows space for me to plan my weekly food, record daily intake including all counts for calories, protein, carbs, and fat and even room for snacks. Doesn't go overboard with information to fill in. Just the basics of the food. Just what I was looking for.

Am ALWAYS starting another diet but I think this handy little book is keeping me on track this time. We all need that for sure. I didn't give it a 5 star because there were a few things I didn't need for my personal dieting but what was there is very helpful!

SO good!! As a manager, I am responsible for setting SMART goals all the time for my team, but never really thought about setting for myself! Setting goals is one thing, but I have come to realize how meaningless goal setting can be without the proper tools to actually navigate how to work to achieve said goals. I considered myself a total "rookie" when it came to putting my ideas/goals on paper and to be honest, was a little intimidated with the thought of creating vision boards and always second guessed if I was doing it right (needed to get out of my negative head space). The author of this book spelled it out SO easy and clearly! She writes in a way that keeps you connected and felt at times like she was talking to me personally!! I felt engaged with her inspirational stories and personal life experiences and loved her visuals. I am pleased to say, I have now created my very first vision board by taking the tips and tools she provided and I have hanging proudly up in my house as a daily reminder on how I am in control of making my dreams/goals become reality. I even started gratitude journaling (which is something I've always wanted to start) and I make a habit to keep those positive affirmations coming --because I have learned, you are what you manifest. I love how this book has opened the door and created this chain reaction of opening my mind to implement things I never would have tried before - and BTW..it's totally working!! GREAT BUY! I'm ordering another one as a gift for my sister in-law as we speak!

I really wanted to like this book. It's too vague in directions and concepts for a vision board. The example of a vision board on page 58 is repeated again on page 65. I wanted more examples of vision boards, more direction on how to create a vision board. There was too much about goals, again with little direction and no "how to accomplish goals". I would have appreciated hearing how creating vision boards helped the author, instead of oversharing her experiences. I felt Ms. Lindsey just rambled on and on. It tries too hard to be all things to all people. The price was reasonable but there is too much fluff here. I would like to return it but it's not worth the trouble.

Returned the book yesterday. I liked the idea of the book and that's why it was purchased. But, the way the author keeps mentioning herself, lot's of I's, all about her family, friends are way too much. She started the book in a good way but the entire book is dragged, with repetition, about the author's life and how she is managing everything. I also did not agree with most of the strategies she mentioned.Overall, not so interesting read, at some point it made me feel that the author has no one to talk to, so she is writing a diary with I's again and again, other times it felt like she didn't have much to write about.

I love this book and the idea of making a vision board. If you can see it, you can believe it! I also love how you feel like you’re talking to a friend with Carrie’s style of writing. It’s super helpful to have step by step things to do, space to write in the book and links to up to date supplemental resources online.

YES!! I lack follow through, and Carrie's book has helped me a ton. I love her use of vision boards, and I felt like I could really relate to her book.

Love that this book has lots of great action plans to get started. There are many spaces in the book to write down goals, ideas and positive affirmations. Highly recommend!

I am guessing that the author has built up her admirably large group of followers on her blog due to people being interested in her life. From what she feeds her family, to her vacations, to how she plans things out. Because that's what we have here with this book - it really is all about her using her life as an inspiration to help you create a set of short term and long term goals. It's all very nebulous, of course, because she doesn't know your personal goals. But I was somehow expecting more images of the planning/vision boards rather than lots of text about herself and then some photographs of forms, quotes, and art and crafts items. I felt like I bought this book only to get a bunch of QR codes to go to her blog where I would print out a form and then fill it out or get nicely formatted inspirational quotes. Somehow, I expected the book to be both more personal (to me) and less personal (of her).The book is broken down into four sections: Introduction, Define Your Dreams, Visualize Your End Game, Implement Planning Strategies.The Introduction section is about understanding priorities, defining your best life, finding time, and setting you up for success. This section has a copious amount of neatly formatted "motivational quotes", scrapbook style.Define Your Dreams includes goals, manifesting your destiny, what is a vision board?, and encouragements at the end to do things like buying magazines and cutting out pictures that resonate with you and downloading quotes that make you smile. The author has even more nicely formatted 'non cheesy' quotes you can download from a QR code. Journaling and vision boards are heavily discussed here and, once again, you go to her website to see more examples (seeing a trend here?).The next section is about implementing the goals. Set them, make a due date, create action items, track progress, checking in. There are examples in the book or again, you can download by going to the website for blank templates.So here are the problems: most of the photos seem to be random - e.g., pictures of color pens, pom poms, and random inspiration quotes. There is a rainbow here of art items and motivational items but less on things like actual vision board examples. All examples are the author's - so we see the same things over and over again. And then a lot of them look to be filler. A good example is a full page photo of a blank page, 6 color pens, two inspirational quote squares, and a random succulent plant. Just before that is a photograph of white space, 7 coloring pens, 5 colorful shredded paper, and three wooden cubes (stamps?) with quotes on them like "dream big" and "with love". Later, there is a framed print of "Today is going to be amazing" next to two succulents, some stamps, and random objects only barely showing. You're to use these to create vision boards - but I'm not sure what the succulent or the shredded paper is going to do? And who leaves a framed inspirational quote on a table? Everything felt random and lacking cohesion. And it felt like the same photograph over and over again, just changing a few variables. There was little variety.Finally, most of the book felt like its purpose was to give some information and then to drive traffic to her blog. On the one hand, she doesn't have an upsell there to the consumer, which is nice. On the other hand, she does depend on blog traffic for income so it felt a bit disingenuous to put so much of the book into going there. I appreciate additional resources and yes, it is definitely nice to have a quick one stop to download. I couldn't test the download pages since they were unavailable at the time of this review, in advance of publishing. But for me, I wanted less of her and more of other examples - I wanted to see how others had used vision boards, how they looked, and what they were able to do with them. Sendler and an inner circle of trusted friends, Jewish and Christian alike, used creative means to spirit Jewish children away to safety in orphanages and foster homes. Tortured by the Nazis, she gave up no secrets, keeping the children and her network safe. While the book is strong on general historical context, featuring descriptions of socioeconomic divisions among Jews in occupied Warsaw, it suffers from the wartime loss of direct historical evidence. Many of the individuals portrayed—Sendler included—do not feel fully fleshed out, making the narrative somewhat confusing and lessening the emotional impact. This is a story better suited to shorter treatments, such as Marcia Vaughan's Irena's Jars of Secrets. More readable, engaging volumes on similar individuals exist, such as Irene Gut Opdyke's In My Hands and Alison Leslie Gold's A Special Fate. how many of us not be here ?

Our granddaughter's Language Arts teacher gave the class a reading assignment. This book was on the list and while someone else picked this one, our girl was very disappointed. I felt it was worth buying to continue her education and love of reading. It did not disappoint us. It made a horrific time in history come alive for her and opened doors to communicate and ask questions. I highly recommend this book. Very well written.

This book should be mandatory reading for everyone! Although this was adapted by Mary Cronk Farrell for young readers, I was quickly entranced and read it in a day. I think it also has a lesson we all need to be refreshed on, the horrific atrocities we do to those who are different from us. It will make you sad, cry, sad, and sick over the senseless cruelty, but you will feel hope when you read of the courage of Irena and her friends. I highly recommend this well written and thought provoking book for all ages!

When a book captures my interest I usually finish it in short order. Not so with this Young Readers Edition of Irena’s Children. I had to read this one in segments, allowing myself breaks to breathe fresh air and seek sunshine after being immersed in the darkness that shrouded Warsaw, Poland during World War II. I’ve read other books about the Nazi’s horrendous ethnic cleansing campaign, but I think like many readers I chose to picture the victims as adults, suppressing the fact that the children of those adults faced the same fate. That isn’t possible with Irena’s Children. Never gratuitous in its depictions, it nevertheless doesn’t shy from portraying the realities of what was at stake for those seen as undesirable, as less than human. Nor does it soften the extreme danger Irena and everyone in her network faced by choosing to risk their lives to save the lives of others. Humanity snatching victory from inhumanity.So who should read this Young Reader’s version? Any and all adults, especially those parents and teachers whose children will be reading it. And as for those children reading it, I think it best suited to readers 12+ due to the intense nature of the subject matter. It’s definitely a book that should be discussed and the historical background explored for a fuller understanding of its topic.Note: I received a copy of this book from the author, Mary Cronk Farrell. Mary is also a friend of mine, but that in no way influenced my review. Mary always has and always will tackle hard topics with skill and finesse.

This true account of Irena Sendler and her friends in Poland warmed my heart and I was astounded by their bravery! Irena and her friends helped save Jewish families during World War II by placing themselves in grave danger, hiding and sneaking children to safety. This is a magnificent story of heroism that affected thousands of Jewish children and has since affected generations of families. This book needs to be read to get the full extent of what true courage Irena Sendler embodies and the bravery it took to save innocent children during the Holocaust! 4 stars.

A woman who risked everything to save Jewish children she didn’t even know from the brutality of the Nazi’s in Poland during WWII. The things she saw happening around her frightened her, but she also became angry. She joined others in secret meetings that grew into a network of brave people that helped save hundreds of infants and children from certain death.The brutalities and atrocities of the Nazi invasion of Poland have been widely documented. This book takes the reader into the burning buildings, the disease infested ghettos and in the brutal prisons of Poland. Irena and her group of brave, everyday heroes suffered greatly for their acts. Some lost their lives, some were arrested and tortured and others lost everything they had, but all of them worked tirelessly to save just one more child every moment of every day.Through it all, Irena encouraged, helped and understood when others didn’t have the energy to go on. She kept lists of the children so that one day they could possibly be reunited with their families. If that wasn’t possible at least they would know their names and Jewish heritage and the love and sacrifice of the families that hid them and raised them as their own.Irena lived through all of the danger, uncertainty and brutality she suffered to be reunited with some of “her children” in the 1980’s. She died peacefully in 2008 at the age of 98. Countless survived because of Irena and the network of others devoted to Irena’s children no matter what the cost.This book was an amazing story of triumph over one of the worst things that happened in world history. It is told in story form with information from archives, historical sources, Tilar Mazzeo’s personal knowledge, personal interviews, historical photos (many included), maps, books and Mazzeo’s original book.I absolutely enjoyed this book from the standpoint of history, WWII and the courage of people bringing hope to the youngest members of a nation in situations that seemed hopeless. It is not easy to read about the torture, pain and death of the group of innocent people. But not reading about it doesn’t make it go away. It is a painful part of history that needs never to be forgotten.This is the young reader edition, based upon Mazzeo’s original book, and has been adapted by Mary Cronk Farrell. There is no way to “tone down” the events discussed in the book. The language may be an easier form for young readers, but it is still about a time a group of people were singled out and methodically murdered, maimed and tortured just because they were Jewish. It was a scary and difficult time for adults and children alike.If they are interested in history, I would highly recommend Irena’s Children. They may have questions that would require further discussion. Adults should read this also. While it is the story of undeniable horrors, it is the story of hope and the triumph of human spirit that encourages all of us to help one another and to make the world a better place no matter who we are or where we live. The story is, of course, inspiring, frightening, and heart-rending all in one book. One of my 7th grade students recommended it to me and I am glad she did. My only quibble is poor editing. Multiple errors hurt the Scholastic edition of the book. "Women" and "woman" are misused a couple of times. The word "Nazis" seems randomly punctuated with an apostrophe with no rhyme or reason. These errors detract from the impact of the book for a reader like myself, though they can never detract from Irena Sendler's courage and strength.
