Reading this book has been an eye-opening experience. The chapters seem to cover A LOT of research. There is some psychobabble, but the authors mostly break it down for us, often providing graphics to help summarize what the babble is about. As a mom, I've come to realize that I have to pay much more attention to what my kids are doing with their time. Not just them either, but their friends too. The violent videogames that a lot of my kid's friends are playing aren't so harmless. Just add abuse from bully, some stress, and a real gun and its a recipe for another Columbine, or Red Lake, or Sandyhook. I really recommend this book for other parents who are unsure of whether its OK to let their kids play Call of Duty or other violent games. I may just buy the hardcover version and share it with the parents of my kid's friends, and recommend it to the school counselors.

This book is an outstanding compilation of research conducted by world-renowned media violence researchers. The graphics and charts are particularly interesting, and the book is well-written and easy to read. It is an important contribution to society, and parents, teachers, and anyone concerned about children and society would be well-advised to read this book.

I have read many of the chapters in this book, and I can say without reservation that the information in here is (a) helpful and informative, (b) presented by the foremost experts in the field, and, (c) based on research employing multiple methods (e.g., experiments, longitudinal studies, correlational studies, meta-analysis) from experts in different fields (e.g., Psychology, Communication). It is well-organized, accessible, and unbiased. I teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in children and media, broadly speaking, as well as a class specifically focusing on media violence, and I intend to use this book in the future!

This book is an excellent summary of contemporary research on the topic of violent media effects. As a media effects scholar, I can say with certainty that the information presented throughout the book is highly accurate and is written by some of the most prominent researchers in the field. I highly recommend this text to any parents and teachers interested in the topic.

This product is required reading for the North Carolina Real Estate Examination. The Book was written by several highly respected real estate brokers- however, the book does not necessarily connect with someone who is transitioning from one career to another. The book is not laid out in which it makes sense. The Basics are advanced, and the advanced is not detailed enough. If you purchase this out of necessity, please ensure that you grab the accompanying CD or the Practice text & Exam Questions. This will help you get your mind into the real estate land.

An earlier edition of this reference book was the text used by my pre-licensing instructor. Now that I'm licensed, I still keep an updated version on my reference bookshelf. It is simply a must have resource for any agent who dares to practice real estate in today's ever-more complex regulatory environment. I buy an updated copy at least every three year. In a profession which even the National Association of REALTORS® says is hobbled by incompetence and unethical behavior, "Modern Real Estate Practice" is a guiding light.

Superior School of Real Estate in NC is known for their great pass rate and so I ordered the book because they require that you read the first three chapters before you start the class. They prefer an earlier edition to the same book I am using but I have been told that the newest just has more info to help you study. I plan to start the class in May. I am very nervous and don't know what to expect. So, anyway I started reading and I am on Chapter 2 which seems forever long. I wish that particular chapter had been broken up but other than that I like the book so far and it came quickly with no problem.

Has some errors in it and we've only gotten through Unit 7 so far. Our teacher has called the REC though so maybe they will be getting it fixed for future print runs.

I actually bought this book mainly for the FREE Test Building software. I was impressed the first time that I had used the 1.0 CD. You can make and take a practice test with up to 23 different real estate topics. There is close to 600 questions with answer explanations. The Software automatically keeps track of your test scores and the date that you had completed them. I just finished an exam with ONLY one question and it was still recorded in my "exam history."The program was designed to only cover about 75% of the computer monitor and will NOT maximize. This book really helped me pass my exam first try! I would highly recommend getting this book...unless you want to take the exam multiple times.

Shmuley is on to something here. Simply wanting sex more often hasn't been the answer to what I've been craving and I haven't been able to pin it down and articulate to my husband just what I was wanting from him. Shmuley explains it so well, getting that playful passion back into our relationship is just what the doctor ordered. Getting us to look at each other through those lustful colored glasses of the early days is just the tonic.

Puts a lighter note on sex and makes things a little easier and not so hard to talk about with your spouse.

Worth every penny. There should be a monument to Shmuley somewhere! If men would read this book it would change the world! Read this book whatever the stage of your relationship.

I love this author. All of his books can be life changing if you appreciate and apply his suggestions to your life. This is excellent for singles wanting to get married; married persons whose passion and romance has waned and needs rejuvenation; and those just simply looking for ideas to spice up their relationships. It might seem pointless to write a review of one of the cornerstones of Christian literature, yet I purchased this particular edition after struggling with the first chapter of the less expensive Kindle edition of the Pusey translation. I am glad I did. The grammar of Augustine's Latin Silver Age easily handles stylistic complexities that are not natural to modern English, and this translation by Henry Chadwick renders Augustine's prose brilliantly. It reveals not so much a saint with a tortured past as a passionate and thoughtful young man sustained and drawn by a love for truth, beauty, and friends on a journey in search of the source of them, which Augustine finds in the God preached by the Catholic faith. Unlike Newman's "Apologia pro Vita Sua," the "Confessions" are not a defense of a life so much as a hymn of praise of the one who led him and gave it meaning. Augustine realizes that nothing was happenstance, but that God walked with him throughout the journey. One could view this story as a journey from alienation to fulfillment, but abstractions sell it short. In many ways, it is a love story in which the protagonist overcomes difficulties to find his true love. In confessing his journey, Augustine reveals an astonishingly modern self-awareness. He understands himself as a person with a personal history, influenced both by social and cultural conditions and inner drives. Readers in our day may well find in him a mentor in their search for meaning in life. This book became a cornerstone of the Western Christian spiritual tradition and remains fundamental reading. I highly recommend this translation.

In the late seventies as I worked on a master’s degree in agricultural economics, my best friend, who had just entered seminary, encouraged me to undertake study of classics in the faith and early on I read Augustine’s (1978) Confessions. The Confessions proved to be a challenging read both because of my lack of seminary training and because of the old English translation. When I undertook this year to write my own memoir, my friend encouraged me to return to the Confessions both because the Confessions provided a template for all memoirs to follow and because this time I also had seminary training.Convinced of the wisdom to return to the Confessions, I sought a more modern translation that would be easier to read and, to my delight, found a translation by E.J. Sheed with an introduction by Augustinian biographer, Peter Brown. Brown (2000) is revered as one of the leading Augustinian biographers of our time and I had used his biography during my days in seminary.I break this review up into four parts. In the first part, I give an overview of the Confessions and why we are interested. In the second part, I review the life of Augustine and sin, as he describes it. In the third part, I will focus on Augustine’s coming to faith. And, in the fourth part, I will review his theological writings, which focus on the creation accounts in Genesis.Background on AugustineFor those unfamiliar with church history, Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD) , which was in modern-day Algeria, lived right after the time of Emperor Constantine the Great (272-337 AD) who made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. Bishop Ambrose baptized Augustine who had such contemporaries as Jerome, who translated the Bible in Latin. The fourth century posed a heady time for the Christian church and Augustine’s theology influenced much of what followed. For example, Martin Luther (1483-1546), a leader in the reformation more than a thousand years later, was an Augustinian monk (Bainton 1995, 25).Of contemporary significance is the point that Augustine hailed from Africa where some of the best theology and early Bible manuscripts were copied. African scholarship dominated the early church and this dominance continued until the Islamic invasion in the sixth century, following the life and work of Mohammad (570-632 AD). The statement that Christianity is a “white man’s religion” (widely touted in developing countries) is not historically accurate and denigrates the significant contribution of African scholarship to the early church.What Are the Confessions?Augustine came to Christ as an adult. In his introduction, Peter Brown writes:“On Easter day, April 24th, 387, he [Augustine] had ‘put on Christ’ by receiving baptism at the hands of Ambrose.” (xv)Shortly before the death of his mother, Monica, who was a devout Catholic, later that year. Augustine supported himself teaching rhetoric, was heavily influenced by the writings of Plato, and wrote the Confessions to be read aloud. Each of the thirteen books could be read in about an hour’s time (xvi-xviii). Brown writes:“For, as Catholic bishop, Augustine did not simply know ‘about’ the Bible, or preach ‘on’ the Bible. He prayed out of it every day, using especially the book of Psalms, which he believed to be the direct, personal prayers of King David, and so the model of all Christan, as they had been of all Jewish, prayer.” (xvii-xviii)The influence of the Bible on the confessions is obvious to any reader because Augustine frequently begins a particular section in prayer and cites scripture throughout, allusions to which the editor has conveniently footnoted.Less obvious to the reader is the definition that Augustine used for confession. As noted by the editor’s glossary, for Augustine confession could be:1. a profession of faith,2. praise of God, or3. an act of penance (self-accusation).Today, we primarily assume the last definition (329).In his book, Confessions, Augustine of Hippo describes his life before and after converting to Christianity as an adult. Augustine shamelessly lays out the sins of his life, saying:“Let the mind of my brethren love that in me which You teach to be worthy of love, and grieve for that in me which You teach to be worthy of grief.” (191)I take this statement to mean that Augustine proposes to be frankly forthright in confession so that he can be an example to others. Is it any wonder that people trusted him and followed him into the monastic life? Having read the Confessions as a young man, I truly believe that they helped lead me to live ascetic lifestyle, even after it was no longer a financial necessity. The translation exceeded my expectations bringing me new and fresher understanding of Augustine's theological thoughts and my own situation.I am a simple lay person, not scholarly; I know there is much more to be gleaned from this wonderful translation and will keep at it. What I especially enjoyed are the footnotes that refer the reader to the scriptures that reflect Augustine's words, fleshing out a deeper, more practical meaning to the scriptures contextualized with everyday life. This is the area I want to follow up more thoroughly and diligently.The book binding is good for me as the inner margin seems slightly bigger than most paperback books easing the usual tendency of having to read on the curve of a book. A silly little thing that makes reflective reading better somehow.I agree with the translators decisions to keep some of the " Thee's" and "Thou's' to convey Augustine's use of the words when they express his personal intimacy with God as distinguished from generalized concepts of God. They draw me in to greater reverence and understanding.

About the Author

C. Donald Johnson is Director Emeritus of the Dean Rusk International Law Center at the University of Georgia School of Law, where he was on the faculty for eleven years and taught international trade law in China and Geneva. From 1998 through 2000, as an Ambassador in the Office of United States Trade Representative, he served as the Chief Textile Negotiator during the negotiation of U.S.-China WTO Accession Agreement. From 1993 to 1995, he represented the 10th district of Georgia as a Member of Congress, where he focused on national security and international economic policy, including NAFTA and the WTO implementing legislation. Johnson also served in the Georgia State Senate from 1987 to 1992, where he was chairman of the Appropriations Committee. He served on the trade staff of the U.S. House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee during consideration of the Trade Act of 1974. He holds a Master of Laws degree from the London School of Economics.

I am an Electrical Engineer, not an Economist. My depth of knowledge ends with “ decreasing marginal utility”. After finishing this book (600+ pages) I understand the Trade issues on the nightly news a little better. I never considered Trade Politics as an interesting subject but was incorrect in that assumption. The author spent a great deal of time explaining and detailing trade history basically beginning with the founding of our country. This is especially interesting if you've read the history of Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Hamilton or any of the Founding Fathers. He then takes us thru the depression with Roosevelt and up to the present with Trump. After reading this book, with the Trade perspective, I now feel like I know "The rest of the Story".

This is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the moment of history we're living in right now. It's not just about trade and tariffs, but really all of U.S. history, in times of war and peace. It's sweeping, from Adam Smith and Alexander Hamilton through Steve Bannon and Donald Trump. Very interesting with funny anecdotes from history and from the author's own experience as a leader on these issues.

The author does a reasonably thorough job of detailing our countries history of trade. Our early leaders were divided; the south wanted little or no tariffs or duties but the north used tariffs to protect our growing industrial base. Our nation’s history has been formed by a this debate. In the author’s introduction he focuses on Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations. Published in 1776 Smith’s work extols the virtues of free trade wherein all of society benefits when every producer is free to maximize their own individual economic freedom. The author included in his introduction the four situations Smith offers where government and industry should cooperate in the form of protection: protect an industry needed for national defense, impose a tax on a foreign import when a domestic tax is imposed upon a similar product of the home industry, impose a tariff on foreign imports in response to the competition, and finally trade restrictions should be removed gradually to allow fledgling enterprises to keep pace.What fascinates me is that all four of Adam Smith’s situations to support the public good are used today by president Trump to justify his negotiations with global trading partners for fair trade. The author dislikes Trump and makes no effort to disguise that fact. I suggest the reader reread pages 18 and 19 again before reading the conclusion. Like me, I suspect the reader will easily identify the inconsistency.

The author who is allegedly expert enough to author a book on American Trade Politics, ignores the significant improvement in the US economy since Donald Trump has been President. He is more of a left wing ideologue than an economist . He is very biased against Trump. He criticizes Trump's effort's to reduce the trade deficits the US has with other nations especially China. He also ignores the economic advantages that would accrue to the US if there was control of our southern border. No one criticizes Mexico or any other country which controls who enters their country. But the author who clearly lets his hostility to Trump interfere with economic logic is against adequate border control. He criticizes any effort by Trump to reduce trade deficits with Mexico or other countries which have surpluses in trade with US. Don't waste your money. He ignores the lowest unemployment rates for minorities since statistics have been compiled for these groups and the lowest overall unemployment rate in 40 years. You can hear similar nonsense for free on MSNBC and CNN.

This book reads like a novel but is a well documented history of our nation’s trade policies. Mr. Johnson hasn’t just put facts together he has told a fascinating story. Never dull.

Although an avid reader, this is my first review of a book. I felt compelled, however, to recommend this history of protectionism and free trade policy.It covers the United States from it’s founding to the present day. At the timing of this review, these issues have received considerable headlines. “The Wealth of a Nation” provided me with a framework for understanding the long debated issues of international trade between sovereign nations. The book is readable and my hope is that it reaches a larger audience yearning for effective government within an increasingly connected world.

Fans of any edition of Exalted will want to grab up Roll of Glorious Divinity 1, Gods and Elementals. Inside, we're given a detailed write-up on various types of gods, from the Masks (whose true purpose has been forgotten) to Bloody Hands, little gods of murder and more, with new charms for these beings, advice on playing them as NPCs as well as Player Characters in an Exalted series. It's not necessarily a must-buy, but it is worth the cost.

A great book for Exalted 2ed book of sorcery 4 the roll of glorious divinity gods & elementals is a cool book on the F'en elementals and ok for the gods.

Even though I think that this book should be taken as a Scroll-series and not as part of the Books of Sorcery-series, it is simply GREAT!I love all the Charms included, even though most are bizarre or seem to have no real application or a simple use, they can be adapted to several ideas and uses for specific spirits. It has dozens of charms and every special use has to be brought appart.Explanation of the genesis of spirits [elementals and gods] is good, their roles, aspects, goals and points of view are cool. Their agendas is a nice move in the Celestial Bureaucracy and the Hierarchy is also a nice explanation of their anger.Has several gods and archetypes as well as powerful entitites such as a Doomsday-dragon: the Kukla.

While I have no issue with the book itself (a great tool for Second Edition Exalted STs), buyers should be aware that some copies of this book were printed with a typo on the cover and title page such that they read "Roll of Glorious Divininty." The copy I purchased from Amazon came with this typo.I don't particularly mind, and I'm sure they'd exchange it if you wanted, but if you don't want to deal with the hassle of that, you might want to find the book in a store where you can check in advance.
