If you ever worked in a research laboratory, you should read that chapter. One could be made it into a movie: suspense, pressure, hope, excitement, doubt and crushing reality. It has it all. Reagan's "Star wars", Richter's Argentinian adventure has other lessons: lies, over-promises and misrepresentations can make the money flow to asinine projects. Japan's atomic program was a revelation too. Also excellent was the NERVA chapter on the development of nuclear propulsion for rockets. As my reading progressed, I also realized Mahaffey's deadpan humor which hits you unexpectedly with zingers and self deprecating comments. For a seriously technical read, I caught myself laughing out loud. He must be a fun guy to be around.

Don't be put off by the low rating, I just have too high standards.The book is well written collection of stories on different attempts at finding the holy grail of nuclear engineering - fission. And maybe death rays. Author's knowledge of the topic and respect for scientific method is felt all through the book. Sadly, this knowledge is also somewhat a downside at the same time. I, having taken a couple of classes in nuclear engineering, sometimes had trouble following all the technical details mentioned in some cases. On the other hand, chapter 9, i think it was, was insulting the reader with explanations of how Newtonian mechanics don't work at a subatomic level. Author should decide on who's the target audience and stick with it.All in all, a good read. Would recommend to anyone interested in history and madness related to nuclear research. Some background in physics recommended though. What is nice, is that it's fresh and relatively up to date

This is a really great read. I bought it on a whim and have since purchased it as a gift and recommended it to multiple friends.Dr. Mahaffey writes very well, making the subject come alive without sacrificing necessary detail.Additionally, the Kindle version is excellent quality with no typos and good quality (zoomable) images and diagrams supported by copious (but relevant) footnotes. Refreshing to see the format well executed.

Mahaffey has a truly amazing book packed with unique information. The Japanese effort to build the atomic bomb, the use of Lawrence’s cyclotron to get crucial nuclear information, Teller’s star war laser, the deuterium tritium reaction and controlled thermonuclear fusion are spun into stories so fascinating I doubted them at first. Having direct contact in many of these fields I realized his facts were correctly researched and put together. Just one example where he and I trod similar paths is the cold fusion experiment with heavy water, palladium cathodes and exotic neutron detectors. I had never read the why some strange mistakes were made and the physical processes that lead to incorrect concepts. The secret US sono-balloon experiments that were interpreted as little green men in flying saucers and why the government had to keep it covered up. He grew up on top of a large nuclear reactor that was lost to Jane Fonda, the China Syndrome and political pressure as was mine at UCLA during the Summer Olympics. Being a Professor in Nuclear Physics I find more information packed into these pages than any other single text. This has lured me into noting his other two texts of Atomic Accidents and Atomic Awakening. The later makes some statements on future directions in nuclear energy which I must seriously consider because of the truths found in Atomic Adventures. Prof ddd, CSUN

I love to listen to books like this when I'm cooking dinner or ironing. Growing up in the Cold War Era, this is a fascinating topic. Haven't finished it yet, but I have learned a lot of interesting stuff. Probably would not read the book, but listening is GREAT.

Wonderful stories from the frontier of science.I understood about half the book. But the author made it so enjoyable I could not put it down.

Jim Mahaffey has a unique ability to explain highly technical concepts in a way that non-technical people can easily follow and understand. His sense of humor is spot-on and makes for a very enjoyable read. After reading this book you will have a much better understanding of nuclear power and the development of the same.

This book has been helpful with descriptions of exercises that can be done easily at home which have eliminated my lower back pain. It has taken a few months but progress was initially noted with better sleep. I am now able to bend over at the waist to pick up items on the floor and not be concerned about being able to stand up straight.

I found a copy of one of Peter Egoscue's books in the waiting room of a alternative health practitioner and evaluated it thoroughly before I that one from Amazon. I was looking for something to help my son who is having a bout of excruciating back pain that mostly radiates into his ankle. He's had the steroid shots and is doing better, but he wants to avoid further problems and perhaps eventualy surgery. I bought The Egoscue Method of Health Through Motion for him.I hope it will help him, I believe this one, also by Peter Egoscue will help me too, especially as I continue to build a habit of doing these extemely easy, no cost exercises to teach my body to re-alighn itself. Anyone can do it and this book also explains how much physical activity in childhood adds to strength and health in late adult life. Mr. Egosque says that older people have a better chance of recuperating using his techniques than younger ones who have been sedentary in childhood. He speaks of the bones, joints, ligaments, and also the organs which are dependent on physical activity from childhood on. I'd love to see mothers read it as well.

My wife is doing this exercise regimen and the results have been excellent with a reduction of chronic fatigue as well as pain. The movements are very gentle and do not require strength or stamina initially. It has been a life changer!

Pete Egoscue saved me from pain 13 years ago. This is book is a great resource for women with lots of exercises to get you started improving your posture, thus decreasing pain and increasing energy.

I first found Egoscue seven years ago when I was experiencing unrelenting pain in my ankle due to a car wreck that had crushed my heel. For ten years I'd lived with the pain -- until I started doing the Egoscue exercises. Within a week, the pain disappeared. Ten years of pain -- just up and disappeared. I was able to walk without lumbering, walk without wincing every step. As years progressed, I got sloppy and less commited to doing the exercices. As my body got more and more out of alignment, the ankle pain returned WITH excruciating hip pain. This pain was so bad that I couldn't get to the bathroom without lunging to the next piece of furniture, couldn't stand at the sink to grate a carrot. I was popping aspirin like they were m&m's. I went back to the book, did the hip menu and, within seventy-two hours the pain completely disappeared. Another couple of years passed, and I again got lazy and stopped doing the excercises. This time, it was the searing pain of sciatica that grounded me. This pain was so bad that I would scream out as I tried to pull myself out of the bed. This was evil pain that wouldn't go away. Lamenting to a friend (whom I had introduced to Egoscue!) about the pain I was in, I was surprised to hear that her husband had gone to the Egoscue clinic for the exact same sciatic pain. She shared his menu with me and -- I am almost embarrassed to say it -- the pain disappeared after just three days. And stayed away until I quit doing the exercises. (I am, if nothing else, an exceedingly slow learner.) Pete's program has brought me back from debilitating pain THREE separate times. I think I finally get it. The Egoscue method works when you work it. It has been a miracle cure for me three times. Yes, it takes a long time to do the menus. Yes, it's really boring to lie on the floor for that long. And yes, it's SO worth it to finally feel GOOD again. Anybody who complains that it's too much trouble or takes too long simply hasn't been in the kind of pain I've been in. But, when they are, this is a method that has never failed to fix what ails me.

In a nutshell, do more yoga. But the information early in the book about anatomy, the hows and whys we have the pain that we do, is very informative and interesting.

I great section for women of a certain age. As as woman still working physically hard, this book was a big help. Exercises are clear and simple and easy and seem to release long held tension and pain.

This book was a lifesaver for me! I use the exercises every day. I originally left a review on the Australian website, but want to post here as well.I highly recommend this book for anyone suffering chronic pain.

Beverly Cleary is one of America's most beloved authors. As a child, she struggled with reading and writing. I read these books as a child, and now I just got them to read to my 5 year old. I was getting bored reading picture books to my daughter, and I thought this might change up the routine a little bit. I have been reading these to her, and she LOVES them. She loves the stories about Ramona and her antics. Even thought she can't read them herself yet, she loves when I read to her, and these really are the perfect thing to read to a 5 year old. I love it because I get a little more storyline than the usual nightly picture-book, and I think it's great for her reading comprehension abilities as well. Highly recommended.

I absolutely LOVE reading Ramona to my class of 2nd graders. Amazingly, it is still relatable even in 2016. The kiddos absolutely adore the characters, and I love sharing my love of this series with them. :)

My daughter loved this collection. In the week after it arrived, she read 5 of the books in the set, and I was sorta peeved at first. I know it’s great that my daughter reads, especially in this modern era, but books aren’t free. (I don’t trust her with library books. She loves her books a little too well.) You spend $20-30 on a boxed set and she blazes through them and they get retired to their place of honor, never to be touched again and certainly never to be donated, traded or recycled. So the stack grows, and more bookcases get constructed.However, not with Ramona. Over the past weeks and months, I have seen her reading and rereading Ramona’s exploits. It’s not uncommon to hear spontaneous bursts of laughter as my daughter explains how Ramona thinks that carpet is a pet that lives in a car. The books are engaging for my 8-year old voracious reader. She relates with the characters and their struggles and sees a piece of herself in both Ramona and her older sister Beezus. It’s obvious that Ms. Cleary’s sense of humor resonates with my daughter, and now the author has the honored place at my daughter’s literary dinner party.“Mom, if I had a dinner party and I invited all of my favorite authors, Beverly Cleary would have a seat next to Ursula K. LeGuin.”

The Ramona books are fabulous! I loved them as a kid, and now my 8-y-o is devouring them. They truly are timeless. I love that Ms. Cleary's most recent book, Ramona's World, is also included. I had never read it and it was a joy to catch up!Beautiful presentation and illustrations, too. The perfect birthday present for an elementary school student.

The Ramona books very realistically depict a little girl coping with being the youngest child in her family & how she tries her best at school, but some times things do not work out well for her, in spite of her great intentions! I read all the books in the mid seventies when I worked in Children's Services in a public library. Many real-life Ramonas came to my programs & they were as lovable as Ramona in the stories. I will re-read these books in the near future.

There are two of the same book (Ramona and her Mother) in the packaged box set. Therefore it is missing the Ramona the Pest book.

Received a duplicate of one book and therefore one of the others was missing. Problem of quality control by manufacturer.

I have quite a few NASCAR history books and none of them come close to this. This is the most thorough, year by year, look at the sport I have come across. There is a decent section on the years leading up to the first official NASCAR races, as well, that shows why short track dirt races are still popular today. I purchased this for the full price and now that it's reduced by a few dollars it's a MUST HAVE!!!It's beautifully bound with a soft black vinyl covering that will last for years. One final thing. The majority of photographs presented in this volume are not repeats of those found in other publications so if you already own a huge library of NASCAR publications this book will still be a very noteworthy addition.

I'm not a big NASCAR fan myself, but my 65 year-old older brother is and has been for decades. So this boo& looked like a great gift for him, and it turned out to be even better when I received it, prior to mailing it to him.At six pounds with a fine "leather" cover (real or fake, doesn't matter), the book contains what looks to be a complete history of NASCAR from its dirt track roots to today's corporate glitz. Scads of photos and no detail left out --- when my brother received it he said it's going to take him 'til he's 75 to finish it, but he's going to enjoy it all the way!Our father raced on dirt tracks in our small western town in the '50s and the early parts of this book brought back warm memories of watching Dad race (except for all the times he crashed).

Bought for a 9 year old NASCAR fanatic, this present went over huge. He would actually sit and read the book rather than watch the crap on TV today. A wonderful gift idea !

This book was all I hoped for and much more. I'll give you a little background about me and NASCAR. I was raised in a household that treated this sport more like a religion than just entertainment. When most people had the NFL football games on during Sunday afternoons we had the race on. Just about every male member of my family and most of the females are practically statisticians on the sport. I even have a baby picture of me on my grandpa's chest with the race on the TV in the background. Needless to say growing up in this environment I became a huge NASCAR fan and watch it religiously every weekend (Truck, Busch, and Cup).But after reading an [...] article about Tim Richmond several months ago I realized I really didn't know that much detailed information about the roots of the sport I loved so much (keep in mind I'm 25). This lead me to a search for the most comprehensive book I could find on the subject which lead me here.When I first opened the book and began browsing through it I was amazed at the ease of use it has. It's set up much like a High School History text-book (almost identical actually) which I find very efficient for me. If I want to learn about a certain period I can skip right to that section and learn everything I need to know without being lost from not having read the previous chapters.All-in-all I give this book 5 stars it is simply the best if you want to learn about the great sport of NASCAR.Enjoy,Terry

I gave this book to my step-dad for Christmas, and he LOVED it. He is all things NASCAR, and he couldn't wait to read it. It is VERY heavy, and much larger than I expected. It is nicely bound. This picture doesn't do it justice.

Lot's of information, definitely heavy reading. Some paragraphs type color onto of pictures make reading difficult and statistic data is only up to 2012/2013. Which is frustrating since it's supposed to be a 2016 print edition. Otherwise it's quite well done it's not as entertaining as some other Nascar books i've read. Plenty of good pictures to look at.

Great book lots of historical information one of the last great sports in America, needs to come home to the south again.

Very interesting book with lots of pictures. Kids and adults alike enjoy this book while visiting my home. I bought used and condition was excellent. I may be a little partial, my father's car is almost in the middle of book. The beginning of the modern age of racing.

John Schindel got his start in children's media in film production, and has gone on to write more than twenty books for children. Among them is the fourteen-book BUSY series of photo-illustrated board books about busy animals, which he created with Tricycle Press. He lives in Oakland, California.  Molly Woodward is a freelance editor who began working with John in her former role as editor at Tricycle Press. The idea for a babies and doggies book was inspired by her daughter's love of looking at photos of babies and of animals. John and Molly wondered why where weren't more books with photos of both, and The Babies and Doggies Book was born. She lives with her family in Berkeley, California.

Amazing book! My 6 month old daughter loves this book, and has since she was 4 months old, and is mesmerized by the pictures. I personally find the pictures to be absolutely adorable. The book talks about how babies and dogs do some of the same things and the examples they give are spot on and very cute.

Fantastic book! My 1 year old loves it and gets so excited when I read it. The book places high quality pictures of babies next to related pictures of dogs on the adjacent page. Both are doing a similar activity (eating, running, hiding, sitting, etc.). It's a cute concept and the photographs are adorable. Gives you that warm fuzzy feeling.

The first book I received was printed incorrectly, but Amazon sent me a replacement right away. This is my one year old daughter's FAVORITE book. She loves looking at pictures of babies and I did a lot of research on different picture books with babies in them before deciding on this one. What I like about this book is the variety of babies (full body, close up of faces, eating, running, multiple babies in one photo, both girls and boys, and many different races). The facing pages with pictures of doggies doing the same things as the babies adds a lot of interest to the book. Beautiful photos. Very cute, rhyming story.

My 1 year old twins absolutely love this book. So much that they ate it to pieces. This isn't a knock on the construction or durability of the book, which is on par with every other board book, but rather a testament to how much they prefer this one over every other.I like it because it features actual pictures of doggies and babies, not cartoons or drawings, and I feel like my girls are drawn to it for the same reason. The words are simple and have good rhythm and rhyme.Meanwhile, I'm gluing the spine back together and considering ordering a backup copy....

I love it when I can find a great quality board book that has real life photos for the illustrations. This board book is a great quality with cute text and wonderful real life images. I love the wide variety of babies in ethnicity and age! Fun variety of settings with bright lighting in the photos make this board book a must have for those wanting a board book with real images.

I started reading this to my daughter when she was around 5 months old. At 14 months, it's one of the few books that has held her attention consistently. Lately, unless we are reading a book with flaps, her attention is all over the place during story time. But, the second I pull this book out, she sits back and listens to every word and looks at every picture. Sometimes we read it several times a day, and she never gets tired of it. Highly recommend.

I come from a family of avid readers so my 1 year old son already has more board books than we know what to do with. That being said, this is hands down one of his FAVORITE books. The close up, real life pictures of babies and puppies has captured his attention since he was tiny. He brings it to me to read almost every day and then wants it read several more times.I have brought this as a shower gift for several of my girlfriends who have dogs.

I bought this book for my one year old who loves dogs. It is the perfect length, not too long and not too short and he loves it! The photographs are beautiful, not too cutesey but definitely endearing. The text is terse and rhymes, ideal for my kiddo.

I absolutely love this textbook for many reasons. However, it has one huge liability which I will discuss at the end of this review which is the reason I am not giving it 5 stars. The books is very well laid out and beautifully written. The information is readily accessible and comprehensible, making it a excellent book for counseling students. The book itself is one of the nicest textbooks I've bought (and I've bought many!). The paper is nice and it lies open by itself (a small, but noticeable feature).Now for the problem. As I was taking a midterm for a graduate course in family therapy today, I noticed that the index in the back is totally inaccurate. I'm guessing the index is from a previous edition and the editors did not update it to reflect the changes in the new edition. After looking at the index, I found myself reading entire pages of text wondering why they were unrelated to the topic for which I was searching. This is a big issue for those of us who use the index to find subjects in the book. This is a major oversight for a textbook, especially one in this price range. If it weren't for that, I would consider this one of the best textbooks I have ever had.

I purchased the digital copy, as I though it would be easier to access the videos and interactive assessments, as I don't have a DVD player where I typically do homework. I didn't realize that this ebook version does not support the videos & interactive assessments discussed in the text, which is crazy, since it's digital and I should be able to click on the links and watch the necessary videos for class. For the money, this should be available and I'm not happy it's not, as I really need those videos/links for class. I'm already three weeks into the class and the hardcopy of this book is now unavailable.

I really liked this book and it was well written BUT the index is completely off. None of the pages matched up whatsoever to the rest of the book. Its as if the index from an earlier version was just copied and pasted. At first I thought maybe it was just the one I received, but then my classmates brought it up as did another reviewer. It kind of made me question the competence of the publisher, which in turn made me question the legitimacy of the information inside. For a textbook that's over $100 you would expect a little better

The book is required by the counseling program in which I am enrolled. The book covers the basics of Family Therapy and I like the simplicity. The print is large enough, clear and readable; often book print font is small, light, and blurry. The book's content does not resemble a traditional graduate level book but I am not offended by that. As I said before, it is simple but I will add that it is straight forward and well outlined. My purchase is a textbook rental. The Amazon textbook rental program ranks high on my list. Nothing to complain about here.

The content of the book is excellent, easy to read, and interesting. However, the publisher should be ashamed at the abysmal lack of quality. On some pages, the are so many typos it is difficult to understand what was original written.

I teach family systems in a graduate program and I have used this text and previous editions for years. I'm giving this prpduct 1 start for the quality of the book not the content. The quality of this version of the text is off: I'm pretty sure the copy of this textbook I received is a counterfeit copy. The there is no color and all of the pages look like photocopies. Based on some of the other reviews about misalignment with the table of contents, this may be the issue, I think these are not from the publisher but copies. If I were Amazon, I would pay attention to where my books are coming from as this is not right.

This was the textbook we used for my class this semester. The book totally exceeded my expectations. I enjoyed it very much. It presents the material in an organized, straightforward, easy-to-understand format. Reading it was a breeze. (I've had textbooks in the past that were boring and monotonous and where I'd fall asleep reading them.) This book was a great read and had a variety of features (pictures, diagrams, case studies, etc.) to keep me interested. I will be saving this book to refer to in the future.

This book was covered upside down so I had to flip the book over to read it. Also, the glossary does not match up to wear the words are in the text. I was panicking during my online final exam as I couldn't find where the information was that I needed to answer the best way. Otherwise, the text is good and the concepts are easy to read and interesting.
