Eon describes existence inside a technological marvel, a tubular world, full of strange humans. Olmy is an experienced government operative for the Hexamon. Since it separated from Earth, the Way has had a long history- full of conflict and change. It can connect to alternative worlds, some almost recognizable (see Eternity) Interestingly, Mr. Bear hypothesizes: what if dissidents left the Way for its antithesis- and homestead a virgin planet? Never be seen again. Would post-modern humans succeed, or be rejected by the planet? Olmy is offered the assignment to find them. He goes, without supplies or weapons- which means living like a native, dependent on the charity of the migrants. Return can be only with a device in the possession of Able Lenk (leader of the migration). Without finding him, it is impossible. That does not stop settlers from thinking him a judge sent by the Hexamon. They are engaged in civil war. Most would welcome returning to the Way. This is not working as originally planned. Other reviewers dislike leaving the Way; Olmy will grieve for it. Because they did not bring technology from the Way, we see what ordeals settlers must endure. Lamarkia is a vision of where evolution might have gone on our Earth. This prequel is a fascinating study of humans caught in the tumult of planetary change. Isn't that what Scify is about?

This prequel to Eon is an interesting introduction to the remarkable world of Lamarkia and its inhabitants. Bear's imagination never seems to diminish. His new world is an interesting concept . His treatment of the human reaction to it is somewhat predictable, but also quite reasonable given humanities previous interactions with new worlds. An unfortunate inclination for violent intercourse and power grubbing seem to follow us wherever we go. Will Lamarkia be any different?Bear really brings a story to life. A remarkable author writing of a remarkable world. Follow The Way to his world of Lamarkia.

I liked the general plot line of a group of people that had been traveling through space for hundreds of years in search of a new planet inside of an asteroid used for mining operations. I also liked the interactions of the protagonist with his lady friend during their ocean adventure. I also found interesting the subjugation of women once these explorers found their "Eden". Leaving nearly all their technology behind, a sect leaves the asteroid via The Way to an uninhabited planet, where a Lord of the Flies scenario begins to unfold.

If you have the other 2 books in this trio, you must read this one. I bought this book from DRs Books. Received as shown in timely manner from across the country. It was weather-proof wrapped, and came with a nice book marker and a thank you card

There are some interesting and clever ideas about how humans could live on planets woth dfft ecos. I'll be moving on to the next book in the series.

You can always count on Greg Bear for well plotted stories, creative writing and inventive ideas. He always holds my interest and this book was no exception.

I thought this book was a SciFi book and I guess it was but it was so much more. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I hope that the next two will be as good.

This book is the result of decades of birding by a biologist with a poet's sensibility. It's warm, witty, intelligent, and useful. The drawings are charming, and they lead you happily through each of Newberry's short subject headings. The chapter on bird walks should be required reading in bird circles.The book is not a guide, but it's helpful in many ways guides are not. It develops a big picture about, simply, how to bird. You'll learn small, surprising facts, and think big, unexpected thoughts. I just finished reading Sibley's "Birding Basics" and I feel I learned more from "The Ardent Birder." There are no charts or graphs--but a connection with what the very first birders must have been up to, long before the advent of standardized birding guides. It's a book about looking, experiencing, and enjoying the critters in the air around us.

This is an excellent book for anyone getting into birding. There's a certain etiquette and sensibility to birding that you might not otherwise know about, which can make your experience much more worthwhile. It's also nice to know what good behavior is when visiting another culture, and you might think of the habitat of birds in this way. The book is pleasure to read, even if you never get out there and look, but you will be inspired to do just that after reading this "future classic" as a fellow reviewer predicted - and which I second wholeheartedly.

Well written, draws upon expertise, experience and rye humor and insight.

This one was a little boring and rambling, sort of like listening to your grandfather's stories about birding in the "old days". Pere Dunne's book is a lot better.

The hard core will find little new in this book, but intermediate birders looking to improve their skills will enjoy and profit from the short essays. The author's style is easy and pleasant, reminding me a bit of Milton White's low-key (if not low-affect!) "Listen, the Red-eyed Vireo," a work Newberry cites several times. The final section, on leading successful bird trips, is likely to be the most practically useful (perhaps even to more advanced birders), but the sections on field craft can also be read with profit by the ambitious and the befuddled. The central section's "philosophical interlude" is no less well written, but not as incisive as, say, Levine's "Lifebirds" or Alan Powers's fine "Birdtalk."I was particularly pleased to see the American Birding Association and its publications praised and recommended.A good book for birders on the cusp of advancement!

This book will be a future classic for birders. I read this book twice within a few days. I never do this! I started birding a few months ago and reached number 99 yesterday. Todd's book has been a great help for me.

Even if you aren't going to belgium, you'll probably want to after reading this. Been reading a bunch of guide books like crazy, and researching online, but this has to be the best guide book I have read yet. I don't know if it is because they have such a specific topic but this book was really easy to read, and extremely easy to understand. I have yet to go to Belgium and check the accuracy of the information, but seems really informative and a great read. The authors write in a great voice and are very knowledgable. I'm a home brewer and love beer, but learned a lot from this book and this really helped finalize the itinerary for my trip to Belgium which is coming up soon. I've just been borrowing books from the library, so I was hesitant on purchasing this book for $20+, but it was very worth it.

This was my beer bible for touring Belgium. I would highly recommend it if you're going on a beer pilgrimage to Belgium OR just want to try out various Belgium beers.

Content dense. I'm going to Belgium in April and it is my main reference. Several re-reads will be required to absorb what I think I need to know to have a great beer vacation.The authors are very knowledgeable but have their own biases. They favor emerging beer concepts over traditional styles. I think the experience will be fine as long as I keep that in mind.

I used the ideas in this book, approached my boss, offered to help her to do an audit and see where went wrong, I wrote a training guide to standardize how we operate and things getting much better. I saw very little value to rehab our division because it does not bring in revenue, so I proposed the idea to help improving company's sales and marketing division. Then the company was hit by lawsuit so I wasn't able to.This book can help your company dominate the market, position yourself, handle the growth and scale fast. The only piece missing is corporate finance.Since I read at least 1 business and investing book per week I was constantly evolving. I realized merely has stunning sales record and a great business system would not be enough. Currently, I am learning how to read financial statement like lenders or investors. And I come to realization that majority of the management were not financially sophisticated enough. If you are the company executives, I would recommend you inspect how management spending on each and every check that comes out. Again, this is still something I learned from this book: if you want to find out where is the problem, you have to do a review and audit, you have to spend time working on the business not in the business.There are a lot of fluffy books talk about leaderships and visions, they were nice to read but fail to make an impact to real business operations. (The first was Predictable Revenue but I can't recommend it because it promotes an over-reliance on email for prospecting.)Holmes’ book is entertaining and powerful. He starts by focusing on habits – because so much of sales is habits and mindsets, gets into running effective meetings and creating strategies, then tackles sales team building, and attracting the best buyers.It's highly readable and entertaining.The biggest takeaways: Be disciplined. Stick to a few strategies and get really good at them. Figure out how to educate your market. Then go after them.

A client of mine recommended this book. I almost didn't buy it due to the comment: "OK if you're selling carpet cleaning services.". I just finished the book and what a disservice that comment was. The author only mentioned carpet cleaning maybe twice (he worked with a carpet cleaning company and mentioned what he had done for them). There were plenty of other industry examples he used. I thought this was a sales book but it covers a lot more than just sales. For example, tips on time management, conducting meetings, managing people, and more. I have read a lot of books on management. I would say I have come up with a list of about eight that I would recommend. This book, along with the E-Myth is one of my favorites. I ordered both the book and the Audible version. I can't say that I am any fan of Audible.com. Their required desktop software is old and antiquated.

People overrate this book. People act like this book revolutionizes selling, but it resembles other sales books. It can help beginners and it can offer tips to the experts, but it doesn't live up to the hype. Furthermore, Holmes condescends to the reader and shows off like a braggart. I like thinking about selling, so this book does inspire thought; just don't expect it to change your life.

He talks about the crocodile brain mumbo jumbo that are basic cognitive science. It will pique your interest in the beginning if you're not familiar with it, but it's awful later on in the book. He talks about how awesome he is and how amazing his techniques are endlessly. Do me a favor, try to find this book somewhere else for free then tell me how to practically implement his strategies. Oren Klaff did a great job in this book explaining how the human brain works and how people perceive your message. He delivers a framework on how to shape your message for your audience and how to be persuasive in your pitch. All based on research how your brain works. Although he has a background in finance, this approach is highly applicable for other industries where pitching is needed, such as advertising. I read this book on a flight to Denver (to see the band Phish!) and thought about the methods he discusses a lot on my trip. It stuck with me.We all think we can make presentations and people will receive them based our calm and analytical approach. This has been proven false! The audience's first reaction is pure instinct and there is nothing you can do about that. Once you are aware of this you will change your message accordingly.He also delivers tips on how to handle so called beta-traps from your opponent: letting you wait in the lobby, saying they don’t have much time for you, interrupting during a presentation, etc. The situations he describes are very recognizable to most of us and I'd like to memorize this book for those situations.

It offers tips and strategies along with anecdotes to show how it's applied. It's not very difficult concept to learn and employ, but it's not as easy as the author makes it out to be (but then again doesn't success require work and effort?). I'm very pleased with the amount of knowledge I've gained and been able to implement within a short period of time.

I've seen more coverage on topics in her other adventures, for instance, Mummies, The Titanic, Martial Arts, Pompeii, and Great Wall of China.I still find it's OK because it's well organized, it has text features that enhances reading comprehension and builds vocabulary, and the text is a myth buster.

Reason for Reading: I've enjoyed other books in this series.Great introduction to the world of pirates and privateers in the 1700s. Isabel's time travel is more believable than in the Egypt book I just read, as her popping up does startle the natives, so to speak. Isabel is aboard a British merchant ship when it is attacked by pirates, then she and the ship's doctor are kidnapped and taken aboard the pirate ship. Explains the life of a pirate, how the sailors became pirates in the first place, the difference between pirates and privateers and the fact that pirates still exist today. Interesting and exciting.

This book was really powerful and I applaud her for having the courage to tell her story. It is irrelevant what you think of her as an MMA fighter because this book is about more than that. It's about rising from the ashes and pursuing something you love to better yourself. Definitely recommend it to anyone who is struggling.

Told in stark plain language, Rise is a powerful tale about confronting powerlessness to stand in your own truth. It’s a tale about the destruction of childhood innocence through gang rape, slut-shaming and uncontrolled school bullying. It addresses PTSD and recovery. What it isn’t is a casual stroll through positive memories. It promotes insight into suicidal and homicidal ideation, and insight into the erroneous choice of a controlling and violent partner out of a warped impression that the relationship offered protection and safety from a hostile environment.

Honestly, I am a big fan of the UFC and of Paige VanZant which is what originally drew me into reading this book. However, you do not need to be into UFC to love this book. This is a story about a girls tough life and all she had to go through to get to where she is. Incredibly inspiring. Amazing read, I literally could not put it down. There are some tough parts in this book that make my heart literally break for her. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I never really review things but I felt like this certainly deserved a 5 star write up. It caught me from the very first sentence to the very last sentence. Amazing book and I will recommend it to everyone for sure.

Without a doubt, one of the greatest books I’ve read in a while. Paige’s story is full of heartbreak, but her ‘rise’ to where she is now is remarkable. It’s a very inspirational and worth read. I recommend it to EVERYONE—mma fan or not.

I normally don’t write reviews but I felt compelled to write a review after completing it. This book is written in a manner that everything just seems to come to life. If you allow it to, this book will touch your soul and awaken something within you. The majority of us have demons and battles we are fighting within ourselves. This book is not only a biography, but it’s book on survival, resiliency and becoming a warrior. Paige exemplifies all of these and then some.

This book is pretty good and I finished it within 2 days. I too agree with others it does seem like she has more to tell but held back or tried to end the book quickly. The book is mostly about her life when she was 14 and the trauma and bullying she endured. I am not a MMA fan so any hardcore fan may not like it since it doesn't really touch much on her MMA career.
