When I found myself having to choose between Morris Gleitzman books to teach my year seven girls this year, I was not thrilled to have to pick this one because the numbers in the class matched the number of books in the box. Another Holocaust book! I'd done 'Briar Rose' with a recalcitrant year 12 class and 'The Book Thief' with an eager year 10 class. And Gleitzman! I could not imagine how he could do justice to the truth and still be Gleitzman with his quirky irreverent characters. So I was pleasantly surprised to be as enthralled with the book (then the next and the next and the now) as my students were. The horror was there, but my students were not overwhelmed by it. The comments after were about having understood something of what it was like to live through awful times. I will teach it again.

My 7th graders sat on the edge of their seats when I read this aloud at the end of the year! I used the document camera so they could follow along, and I had a "During Reading" worksheet where after every two chapters they had to write a connection, prediction, summary, or question. It's an endearing story with characters that my students really seem to get involved with and have sympathy and appreciation for what it must have been like to be a child during the Holocaust. I teach a small group class of students with learning disabilities.

When I was in high school, I went to Germany on a school trip. In Germany, we went to Dachau, a concentration camp that has been turned into a memorial/museum. The emotions I felt at Dachau have never left me. The vast camp was completely silent except for the crunch of visitors' feet on the gravel. The pain within those gates was so strong, we couldn't even speak to one another. But more and more, I find my students are finding themselves disconnected from the Holocaust. Sure, they know the mass murder to millions of people is horrendous, but they really can't fathom the fear and agony felt by so many. We read books, we watch movies, but it is hard to grasp the same emotions I felt the moment I stepped foot into Dachau so many years ago. Therefore, as an educator, it becomes very hard to find quality books that will knock my students around emotionally the same way Night by Elie Wiesel did the first time I read it in high school. Once, by Morris Gleitzman knocked me around, and will certainly open the eyes of any jaded student.It's 1942, and Felix has lived in a Polish Orphanage for 3 years and 8 months since his parents left him there. They are Jewish and owned a bookstore in town, but they made a deal with Mother Minka to hide Felix, but they told him they were just going to take care of some bookstore business and be back. They still haven't returned. So Felix passes the day writing stories about them saving people and being brave in the outside world. When Felix gets a whole carrot in his soup one day, he decides it is a sign from his parents that they are coming to get him. When Mother Minka sadly tells him it isn't a sign, he decides to leave the orphanage to find them. After watching a group of Nazis come to the orphanage and burn Jewish books, he is worried his parents' books are in danger, and he knows he has to go help.On his way into town, Felix comes across a lot of puzzling situations. First, he tries to hitch a ride on a cattle truck that is full of people, but a soldier on top of the truck shoots at him. He assumes it must have been a mistake and actually feels bad for the soldier who must be upset he accidentally shot at a little kid. Then he goes to his parents' bookstore, but the books are all gone and a local Christian family is living in his house (and threaten to turn him in to the Nazis). Finally he happens upon a farmhouse in flames and discovers a mother and father shot (and all the chickens) and a young girl who is barely alive. He drags her away from the flames and the car coming back to the scene, saving her from whoever did this.At first Zelda is upset, but then she is just plain difficult, arguing with everything Felix says. When they get caught by Nazi soldiers and taken to the ghetto, it is her determination not to lose Felix, though, that saves them both. When a Nazi soldier tries to separate them, a large Jewish man offers the soldier something in German and he allows the man to take the kids. Barney, the man, takes Felix and Zelda and hides them with the other children he has saved in the ghetto. It is hear that Felix begins to learn the truth about the Nazis and what they are really doing to the Jews. When the ghetto gets emptied, Barney and the kids have no choices but to be packed into the trains with the other Jews. You might think all was lost at this point, but at some point, Felix's luck has to change!This was such a beautiful little book (150 pgs). I loved Felix so much I just wanted to gather him up and keep him safe. He is so sweet and innocent and just wants to protect his parents. His naivete about the Holocaust was so scary and endearing at the same time, it broke my heart. But something I think kids might relate to is the fact that he is just a kid. He does kid things like protect kids from bullies in the orphanage and make up wild, fanciful stories. Yet, at the same time, he is stuck in this time period that has been written about, talked about and filmed ever since it ended. I think kids can relate to his childish ideas and that alone makes this story more powerful than others. They can imagine how they might feel if they were in the same situation.The story is very short and perfect for any middle school student, but its beauty lies within the multiple layers that can be pulled back for a wide age range of people. For a middle school student, this story might be a face-value story about a boy in the Holocaust, but for an older student, this can be a way to quickly examine the plagues of war, such as the loss of life and innocence. It gives them a chance to delve deeper into the consequences of war. This is quite simply a beautiful story and as sad as it made me to read it, it also made me hopeful for Felix and for the growth of the young people I work with each and every day.

I'll have to say good-bye to everyone here soon. That makes me feel sad. And when the other kids see Mum and Dad are alive, they'll now I haven't been truthful with them. That makes me feel even sadder" (page 5)In my opinion this is a strategy for continuing our reading, which is also reinvigorated by an enigmatic conclusion of phrases like"you pray to God, Jesus, the Virgin Mary, the Pope and Adolph Hitler?", automatically you'll ask to yourself if there will be a connection between the religion and the dictator?Even the second chapter is entitled "Once" Once upon time the childhood of the main character is now at risk, thanks to the delirium of a human being: Hitler, which is introduced in the following form:"I stare, numb with disappointment. it's not Mum and Dad. It's just a bunch of men in suits with armbands"One second ago our main character was happy because he was waiting for his parents after two long and endless years. Reading this line I felt the sensation of the imminent atrocities of that time through the eyes of a child. "I have another though. That poor soldier. Tonight in the barracks he'll hardly be able to swallow his dinner he'll be so upset. All he wanted to do was play a little trick, and now he thinks he's shot an innocent kid." The author Jeb Roosebrook had already told some of the "behind the scenes - stories" in the documentary PASSION & POETRY - RODEO TIME which I made with him last year (available on the new Kino Lorber US Blu-ray Blu-ray/DVD for JUNIOR BONNER), but this goes far beyond that of course... I loved every page! A rare opportunity to catch a feeling of really being there on the set, back in 1971... GET IT !!

The book worked for me. It's a short book and priced accordingly. Its target readers are developers familiar with Java, wanting to get up to speed with the new features of Java 8. It covers Lambdas, Streams and new Datetime mostly, and then discusses other new features. It approaches the material from a fundamental, conceptual level, enabling a reader competent in previous versions of Java to quickly understand Java 8. I liked the approach of highlighting the conceptual stuff, describing the good points as well as the pitfalls. The code examples are short and to the point. I particularly liked the chapter about Nashorn.

Gave me a taste of java8 in a compressed form. Terse but useful, and has good insights. Downside is that you need a better sense of the library to actually write useful code, so play on your own or pick up a more detailed book. But this one gives pretty good concepts to start with

Highlights most important features if you are looking for a quick intro and can handle the details from javadoc this book is for you. I read the book multiple times i still find it useful.

Great resource for Java 8 - recommended for those with Java experience and not for beginners...

Ben also addresses the social and political turmoil of the time with excellent commentary.There is no other book, nor documentary around currently that is as descriptive and as detailed as this book. There is so much detail that it feels as if you are there with the rap icons themselves. This is what journalism is about, and Mr. Westhoff slams it out of the park. Ben sets an example for how journalism should be done. I don't want to spoil the book, but I wish it were longer! Anyone who is a fan of West Coast Hip Hop, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, N.W.A., Ice Cube, Eazy-E, The D.O.C., 2Pac, Death Row Records, etc., in particular, will really enjoy reading this book. I highly recommend it. It belongs on the shelf of any Hip Hop fan.

I love finding these sort of things and by that I mean something that matches two of my wives favorite things, coloring books and Nightmare Before Christmas. This book looked like something that would cover those two things but that was more hope and expectation.I don't have pictures to add to this that others haven't done better, but the cover does give it away, a lot of the things you could color in, like the pumpkins or the hill or darn near everything, is already blacked out. If that wasn't bad enough the majority of the pages are a single image, like zero who is white anyway, repeated in a very standard grid pattern on a page. For the most part over half the book is patterns that are in the likeness of NBC or what you would consider "Burton like" in design.The few single images are decent drawings of NBC so that is why I gave it the second star, else I'd have returned it.

I’ll start by saying I am a huge NBC (Nightmare Before Christmas) fan. I watch the movie several times a year and I have a large NBC collection. A month ago I saw this coloring book was being released I was extremely excited and pre-ordered it. I received it last night and every time I look through it I am very disappointed. The pages are perforated, but that is one of the few good things about the book. The designer of the book was extremely lazy in character selection and page design. Out of all of the possible, colorful characters the only characters featured in the book are Jack, Sally, Lock, Shock, Barrel, Oogie Boogie, The Mayor, Zero and Dr. Finkelstein and they are only featured on about half of the pages. The other half are random shapes, tombstones, skulls and mostly colorless items. When they have Lock, Shock and Barrel coloring pages, they colored most of their clothing black. They also colored most of Sally’s dress black too. I’ve attached some pictures, some of the good pages and some of the lazy pages. The pages with skulls, vertical stripes is repeated multiple times. I would not recommend this book to any fan.

Very disappointed. This had so much potential. After all, there are parts of the movie that are very colorful and would have been extremely fun to color. Oogie Boogie's Lair for instance. Christmas Town. Jack's Experiments. Jack as Santa Claus. The actual Santa Claus. Even the tree ring of different holidays. Not a single one of these things were in the book. Not one. It's almost like they tried to pick out the best parts of the movie and (laughing behind their hands at the idiots who are fan enough to pre-order sight unseen) decided to leave out all the best parts. And the parts they did include that would have had some potential for your individual creativity they decided to color in black just to prevent such blatant creativity. Most of the pages are wallpaper. Cool NBC wallpaper, but wallpaper nonetheless. In fact, I counted 79 pages of wallpaper, some with a small central figure, or figures, but most with nothing but a repeating pattern. Over 75% of the book! I gave 2 stars because if I were planning to keep it, which I'm not, there are maybe 2 or 3 pages I might enjoy coloring. And also because the pages are perforated. Save your money. Someone will make their own with cheap paper and sell them for 5 bucks. And no matter how terrible the copies, or how flimsy the paper, it will undoubtedly be better than this dross.

I am a huge nmbc fan...HUGE FAN! So i pre-ordered this as soon as i could and just got it today. I AM SO DISAPPOINTED IN THIS COLORING BOOK!!! All the other art of coloring books for Disney are super detailed and have tons of characters, even some more obscure ones.... and this one doesn't. It only has Jack, Sally, mayor, zero, lock, shock, barrel, oogie, and doctor. The pages with characters are very undetailed with little to even color.... plus tons of the pages are random black and white designs. I feel super let down.

I love The Nightmare Before Christmas. But this adult coloring book was a bit of a dissapointment. First off alot of the pages are completely black except for a few areas that are left white to color. There are no pictures of Halloween Town or Christmas Town. The only characters there are to color, are: Lock, Shock, Barrel, Jack, Sally, Zero, Mayor, and one picture of Dr. Finklestein. If allowed I will post a few pictures. To be fair there were alot of open coloring pages too that were mostly white, but I'm more disappointed there weren't any town pictures, and not all of the characters were included, just most of the main characters.

Not much to say that everyone else hasn't already said. If its not black or wallpaper it's a character that is white and needs no color. This was by far the most disappointing and lazy coloring book I've ever come across.

So disappointed in this!!! I'm a huge NBC fan and I was looking forward to coloring the pages in this book. I preordered MONTHS ago and there's barely anything to color...it's more like a picture book. I'm just so let down :/ I feel stupid for preordering and I'm disappointed in this book big time.

Ok, so like the other reviews this book is not what I expected and I was hoping for a lot more (expectations way to high). I think a major problem (for me) is the main character (Jack) who is white, so when you have pages of just his face and the background being mostly blacked-out there is not a lot to color. Theres even pages with skeleton bones and black backgrounds so lets just say you would have to be really creative to color in this book. Maybe you can make Jack Blue. Maybe you'll make him green or Blue and Green, I think you get my meaning. Now you may ask why 4 stars and its because this book is still really cool, especially if your a fan of the movie or Disney (see other reviewers pics their pretty good). I love the wallpapers, even though theres a lot of them and the pages that do have characters are still pretty nice.Helpful hints: Don't pay full price, look around for a discount and when coloring in this book its best to think outside the box and again be creative. I actually made a copy of one of the pages and made it into a book cover I could doodle on. :)

I purchased this book after several hospitalizations and my getting a diagnosis of lone A-Fib. My cardiologist was very little help to me with answering my questions and he gave me next to nothing concrete to pursue a better quality of life with A-Fib, and the scare of having heart surgery (ablation)sent me searching elsewhere(that's not an option for me).Yes, the book was easy to read and comprehend (though I am a retired RN) and there were many first-hand accounts from A-Fib sufferers, but it left me hanging dry in the way of any alternative direction, opposed to a possible nutritional deficiency and surgical procedures. Apart from the medication aspect which was covered in detail, I'm pretty sure that every one of the stories told chose surgery as their main option. You mean apart from Big Pharma, ablation and surgical procedures no one has conquered A-Fib? Where are their stories?I refused to believe that those surgical procedures were the only ways to correct or solve my problem. So, while reading "Beat Your A-Fib" I gained insight into the typical patterns of patients and their treatments and the variety of surgical "cures," I felt very let down . . . none of their scenarios were what I was looking or hoping for! Of course, time will continue to tell, but I just want to shout out that you can seek alternatives--a naturopathic way of thinking could be of great value to you with your A-Fib!BTW, Chapter 5 mentions mineral deficiencies and supplementation--potassium and magnesium are very important, (my blood work was all fine). Where are the stories of those that found a cure by strictly going this route? Listed are some supplements like CoQ10, Vit. C, taurine and hawthorne berry, but why did this discussion not continue, with dosages and therapies that work for people? Some of the main supplements that my ND recommended and worked for me are: hawthorne solid extract 1/4 tsp 2XDay, convallaria (lily of the valley) 8-10 gtts in water 2XDay and L-taurine 1000mg 2XDay, plus adding additional magnesium (covered in the book).I gave it 3 stars for leaving out an important option (for me) and not going into more detail and for not including pertinent patient stories from those taking a medication/supplemental route alone.

The important ones available from Amazon are - taurine, magnesium glycinate (a non-laxative form of magnesium), co-enzyme Q10.Learn what to eliminate in your diet - all the usual suspects: MSG, salt, sugar, & less calcium. Get the book & implement the dietary changes before proceding to invasive procedures or prescription drugs with their side effects. Go to Hans Larson's Afib Report website for additional dietary advice & read his review of this book in among the 5 star reviews. You might also look at Dr Fuhrman's "End Of Heart Disease" which advocates a plant based diet, instead of potassium, magnesium & CoQ10 supplements. Green leafy vegetables are loaded with magnesium according to PhD Rhonda Patrick, which you can confirm in her videos on YouTube. If short of time, get a blender for your vegetables to create a banana smoothie.Update - As of 8-17, still A-Fib symptom free. I might add that the nurse NP at the VA was asking me about taurine and magnesium as a potential treatment. Doctors are worried that A-Fib will cause the slowed blood flow in the atrium to coagulate, clot & cause a stroke, but are constrained from telling you about untested natural anti-coagulants like ginger, garlic, fish oil, low dose aspirin & vitamin E (mixed tocopherols). In the UK (not the US), see Dr Sanjay Gupta's extensive videos on A-Fib on YouTube for an in-depth discussion of the issues with A-Fib. According to Dr Gupta, research exists that strokes may only occur with A-Fib when other health issues such as insulin resistance or GERD are present.

At the time it happens, the doctors are all moving down a road familiar to them, while you and your spouse are sitting in the exam or hospital rooms wondering what happened, why, and what's in the future. Whether you end up with the right doctor from the start or not, you will be better informed on what to expect and what might be your next course of action, after reading this book. A great resource. The case studies are helpful too, as once you enter the world of A-Fib, there are stories with everyone you talk to, and it's good to be reading some where the condition has come to some resolution.

I liked that it is written for a lay person. I wasn’t so happy with the solutions offered. It seems pretty much all the people went with different surgical techniques, which are rather traumatic in some cases and out of reach because of cost, in others.For those of us who have insurance that doesn’t cover big ticket procedures, especially in other countries and/or work as contractors, so no paid time off, no guarantee of work when you come back...well, some of the handlings for Afib are just not going to happen.On the plus side, at least this is a no fluff look at the Condition and ways that others deal with it, with varying degrees of success.

Purchased this for my very active Father, who is in A-Fib and not able to complete cardio-version due to a clot. The book gave my Dad the courage and confidence to insist on treatment after his cardiologist told him to adjust his activity level rather than treat the A-Fib. He has a new cardiologist and is on the path to cure.

I've spent a decent amount of time recently thinking about predictive models, mainly for churn and LTV. As such AI and ML has been something that I've started researching more. I'm not at an advanced level yet, but have spent enough time to know that most of the stuff I'm consuming is simply telling me about the importance of AI and ML as well as the threat or the risk. I haven't found too many practical manuals or frameworks for applying it. I'm not yet through all the frameworks, but in Chapter 8 I've start to be able to outline how to think about what to apply, and what data I'm actually going to need to have. I also like having some of the typical errors around data collection outlined for me. For me, this is super valuable. Will post updates if I have cool tips to share that I've learned.

This is an excellent resource for business owners like myself who are interested in AI, but weren't quite sure how it will change the nature of our work. 'Applied Artificial Intelligence' is keen to note that artificial intelligence is only as good as it's programming. And that programming is inherently biased based on the views of the programmer. To this end, AI programs can produce inconsistent results, even when implemented correctly. I'm not sure if the solution to this is better programming or better understanding of our customers. Since AI talent is scarce, it will take time before these methods will be adapted on a large scale. I agree with the quote about the challenges of AI: "The future is already here, it's just not evenly distributed." - William Gibson. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a handle on how AI is shaping the business landscape today.

I am using it to aid my transition into an AI-centered company in a design role, so I found the introductory section especially useful in its clarification of domain terminology (e.g. "machine learning" vs. "deep learning", "MLaaS", "probabilistic programming", "AGI" vs "weak AI"). I worked in government for over a decade making policy decisions about environmental protection and public health. I picked up this book because I’ve been curious about how automation and AI will change our society as well as our governance models. While a lot of the book focuses on corporate applications, I did find the sections on ethical AI, defense against malicious uses of AI, collaborative design of AI systems, and reskilling of displaced workers to be very insightful and relevant for improving public service. I also found it useful to understand the concept of “technical debt” and alternatives to accuracy as measures of how well machine learning systems are performing. Overall, I found this book to be a useful introduction and look forward to learning more about the space.

As someone who develops algorithms that make predictions and automate tasks, I often walk overly excited business leaders back from unrealistic expectations about how using AI will improve their operations. This book is an comprehensive high level view of the usefulness of using this technology in companies. While it lacks depth on many nuanced topics (esp. around black-boxy nature of most algorithms), it should give an org leader enough context to have a constructive conversation about the why and how AI fits into their business objectives.

Recommended if you want to cover your bases when it comes to AI for business.Helped me clarify a lot of AI terminology and especially liked the section on "common errors with data and machine learning".
