I saw this book in the Museum of Natural History in DC and was thrilled by the beauty it conveyed. i also noticed how different reviewers reacted to the book, each one expressed a valid point. The fact that this tribe may be used as a spectacle is true, but it is important to weigh this against many other spectacles or tribes all over the world. This one becomes benign in comparison and in my opinion remains artistic, creative and beautiful. Not to mention you can wash the paint of the canvas and start over again without damaging it!

Amazing and inspiring images of these beautiful people but the printing of the images is where the book goes awry. I was so excited to get this book as I had seen some of the photos on line and I was immediately in love so I knew I had to get a copy of the book but I found the printed images dull and thus a detriment to the work itself. Bigtime Bummer.

This is not your typical coffee table book full of big bright exotic photographs. It is big, it is bright, and it is exotic but the images of the young people of the Omo Valley are incredibly unique visions of mankind and nature. These young people paint their faces and bodies with natural pigments derived from the soils and clay of the area. Thus you see reds, yellows, white, brown, and grey. The children devise creative head adornment from fruit, seeds, leaves, branches, seedpods, and even animal skins and horns. The people are beautiful in their innocent nakedness. The use of flowers and leaves and twigs as bodily decoration occurs primarily around the head and as a head covering or decoration, much like a crown of leaves. Many cultures do this including the ancient Greeks or Hawaiian islanders. The reddish black skin of the people acts as a contrast to the off-white, grey, and yellow ochre body paints. The application of the pigments is often roughly drawn with a natural relaxed flair. There is rarely a painted face with the precision of a circus clown. Of course these young people don't go around looking like this every day since they have lives to live tending gardens and livestock. But neither do the images feel false. If someone came to the USA and took pictures of people going to midnight mass on Christmas eve, would we say the pictures were atypical of daily life in America, probably we would. But would we say the images were not part of the American experience and reality, probably not. These images give the same impression. These are young people dressing up with leaves and flowers and body paint, something they don't do every day but something that is indeed part of their culture. This makes the book fascinating and one of the strongest books of photography of Africans that I have ever seen. It is highly recommended.

Hans Silvester's photographs of the Omo Valley tribe are fascinating. Living works of art.A large format, well-made paperback, with 160 magnificently reproduced color photographs. I highly recommend this book to those fascinated with African sculpture and art.

With the American democratic experiment at a precarious moment, Allan J. Lichtman’s The Embattled Vote in America From the Founding to the Present is a timely and important book. Neither Hillary nor Trump received as many votes as Nobody, the choice of all the millions of people who stayed home. This undercuts the legitimacy of government, yet many in government make concerted efforts to prevent people from voting.Lichtman traces the history of American suffrage from our founders choosing to leave voting decisions to the states and the states established all sorts of different standards. After the Civil War, African American men won the vote, though states crafted rules to keep them from exercising it. Fifty-six years later, women won the right to vote. In 1971, voting age was lowered to 18, recognizing that young people were dying in a war started by politicians they could not vote for or against. In 1965, the Voting Rights Act was passed to make good on the promise of the Thirteenth Amendment. Since the Voting Rights Act, there has been a constant struggle on the part of the Republicans to disenfranchise minority voters through various schemes and corresponding energy from Democrats to expand the franchise and legally combat the voter suppression efforts of Republicans.How are votes suppressed? Gerrymandering lets politicians choose their voters so voters feel their votes make no difference. States pass laws taking the right to vote away from felons, not just while they’re in prison, but also while on parole, and permanently in some states, so a person’s right to vote can depend on where they live. Closing polling places so voters wait in long lines is a huge burden. In Arizona, some polling places served 21,000 voters! Shortening early voting, restricting voter registration and requiring burdensome ID requirements also function to reduce voter participation.Lichtman reviews the several methods of expanding or restricting participation. He also examines the canard of voter fraud, exposing it as a two-pronged effort to decrease confidence in our electoral system which reduces participation and provides a rationale for policies that make it harder minoritized voters to vote.This is an excellent review of the history of voting reforms, good and bad. It is full of the details that make a history interesting with examples of different politicians making their arguments, some blatantly and proudly racist. It covers the voting wars up to mid-2018 and proposes reforms for the future. I get so irritated by books that are full of the problem and have no solutions. There are solutions and Lichtman looks at them carefully.Lichtman’s writing is clear and lively. He has an opinion and isn’t afraid to share it. This makes for an interesting book even though it’s maddening to read about legislators researching exactly how best to keep Black people from voting and justifying it as being not racist because they only tried to disenfranchise Blacks because they’re Democrats, not because they’re Black.I highly recommend The Embattled Vote in America and there could not be a more important time to read it.I received a copy of The Embattled Vote in America From the Founding to the Present for review from Harvard University Press.

This is a must-read book for any American interested in protecting their precious right to vote. The book explains that Americans lack a constitutionally protected right to vote because of the framers great mistake in omitting voting rights from the U.S. Constitution. The book shows that voter suppression is as old as the Republic and continues today in the from of voter ID law, racial and partisan gerrymandering, and the purging of people from the voter rolls.

The most basic, and the most important, part of democracy is voting. That fact makes it amazing that it took until now for a study on the history of American voting to be written. Written by an expert in voting rights cases, this book not only shows the mistake the Founders made in not explicitly listing a right to vote in the Constitution, the battles over voter expansion and voter suppression (and the connection those battles have to race), and what we can do about it preserve our democracy. If I had known the ending in advance, I would not have read this book, but I'm getting ahead of myself.First, the good. The book was pretty well written by a man who obviously knows the area wherein the story takes place. Confusing at times to non-boat-savvy people, but otherwise pretty well written.Now, the bad. First of all, DHS is (are) not the good guys. If they were, however, I do not see why they would want McDermitt. If you read the book, you'll see what I mean. And then the ending. Perhaps it's just a personal thing, but I hate the ending. I understand it - tidy up loose ends to make way for a sequel - but the reason makes me like it even less. There are other things about the story that I did not like, but I would have gotten beyond them, except for the ending.Update: While reading another book, I remembered something that I really liked about this one. The sex was not the in your face, blow by blow description sort of thing, but more the subtle From Here to Eternity sort, and I really appreciated that. If I wanted smut, I would know where to look, but I didn't, so I say well done on this.Update: Dec 14, 2015 - I read another, then another, and, before I knew it, I had read them all. I like Jesse and what he stands for. I also like the settings and characters around him. For me, these are good, interesting reads, and I will probably read any future books in the series. The writing has progressed to what I would call very, very good. Recommended. I still only give this book 3 stars for the reasons stated above, but, if I could, I would give the series 5 stars. When I can, I will go and rate each book in order.

Author of Requiem for a Party GirlThis was the first Jesse McDermitt novel in the series that I read and I enjoyed it. My disposable income for book purchases has been very limited for a couple of years so I appreciate it a lot when authors offer a book free, which is how I came by this one. I immediately wanted to read the others but it was not possible. I've read a couple more, including the prequel, as Wayne has offered them free. Again, my thanks. Fallen Palm made me want to visit the Keys, something I never wanted, as I am somewhat afraid of deep water and that Seven Mile Bridge was daunting to me. Jesse is a likable character, with human flaws as we all have. His first wife did not behave well, to say the least, but he deals with it. I liked his serendipitous visit to his friend and the new career that came of it. I didn't like what happened to his second wife, but in fiction as in real life, bad, bad stuff happens. And the perpetrators don't always get their just deserts. I do recommend this book and the rest of the series.I'd like to add, the readers who trashed this book would do well to re-read and edit their reviews. Misspelled words and bad grammar do not give me a lot of confidence in what someone is trying to say.

This was my 2nd book by Wayne Stinnett, having found the first action mystery to be a very enjoyable read. But Fallen Palm fell short of my expectations of excellence in that a main character wasn’t just killed, but killed in a brutally disgusting, sexual manner ... and not quickly.If that loss of the main character’s new bride is what an author thinks will make an admirably ‘strong He-Man’ for his stories, he is sadly mistaken and not an author I want to support. I never bought another book by Wayne Stinnett because of this novel. There are many fine authors of action mysteries who do not resort to such brutality as a misplaced thrill-seeker.Wrongly perceived or not, I read mysteries for entertainment, not more despair of the low points our civilization consists of.

I have to say that until the ending, I loved this book. The key west lore and history was a great part of the book. The plot was a little far fetched, but still had me wanting to finish the book. However the ending was so violent an shocking, and might I add, not at all necessary, that I was left with a bitter taste in my mouth. There was plenty of drama without the part about his new wife. I won't be reading any more of this author.

Fallen Palm: A Jesse McDermitt Novel is the second in the Caribbean Adventure Series by Wayne Stinnett.Fallen Palm continues the story of Jesse’s new life as a retired marine. His lady love comes to call and he being courted by a secret government agency. Wayne Stinnett continues writing this series with a laid back easy feeling. In addition to continuing Jess’s story in the first person writing it as he did in the first book, he has included some third person accounts of other characters in the story when they are not interacting with Jesse.I like the easy way this series is unfolding. It’s interesting, almost like reading a diary of someone’s life, as it is happening. There is a lot of information about the Florida Keys being passed along in these books. I look the places up on Google Earth to see what the characters are seeing. I will recommend this book for those who like a little adventure mixed with some military and nautical actions and a little bit of romance. Young adults, as well as adults, will like this book.

This book has made all of my relationships more manageable. If you grew up in a dysfunctional family like I did, where communication usually happened in the form of guilt trips and passive aggression, this book can change your life. As soon as I started applying concepts like observing without judgment, communicating my needs and my feelings openly and honestly, asking for what would add joy to my life, and not taking ownership for other people's feelings or responses to me, I noticed a change in how people in my life responded to me and my requests. People began to seem more open to hearing me, and normal every day conflicts can be addressed without people getting escalated.

Are you a violent communicator?Though this book does not pose this question directly, it is a question that I’ve had to reflect on while reading this book. And I haven’t really liked what I’ve been forced to admit - that many of the ways we communicate in our everyday life take from the well-being of others.Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication has caused me to reflect deeply on how I use communication in my day to day life, and the ways in which we can either give life to others or take it away. Every time that we communicate with others, we can either build deeper understanding, connection, and compassion, or we can simply ignore them or worse, create further disconnection and less understanding.Marshall makes clear his ultimate goal, which is largely reflected in this book. “What I want in my life is compassion, a flow between myself and others based on a mutual giving from the heart.” Practically, Marshall outlines the tenets of Nonviolent Communication, a system he developed as a counselor and spent his career teaching all over the world. At its core, Nonviolent Communication is about communicating honestly and receiving empathetically, a way of communicating that “leads us to give from the heart.” Underneath each aspect of nonviolent communication is four key components: observations, feelings, needs, and requests. In his estimation, all frustration and anger is about unfulfilled need, and therefore our communication should be about getting to the core of those needs. Though it sounds simple, this is profoundly difficult; most of us are unaware of the needs we truly have, and communicating those needs is incredibly difficult, even in close relationships.While some of it can read as touchy-feely or robotic language, I’ve found this book to be both challenging and inspiring. On a practical level, I’ve found Rosenberg’s work to resonate deeply with me at a time where I feel few people are heard or really communicate fully and honestly what they think, both in public and in private. Secondly, as someone who studies Communication, I see significant overlap with Rosenberg’s suggestions with significant realms of Communication scholarship that suggests to me that this is much more than some counselor’s idealistic approach to being in the world. True, there has been no empirical research done on this, but I think there are still deep truths and practical tips that could help anyone and everyone communicate in ways that enrich the lives of others.In the end, I encourage you to read this book. For those that want 30,000 feet, skim through it and you’ll be better for its overarching ideas. For those that want in-depth tips, Rosenberg is clear and precise in showing you how to implement the language. And if you read this and don’t like it, leave a comment and tell me about it so we can dialogue more about it. I know for me, I’m better for reading this book, and I think I’ll show up for others better too.

NVC is great, but you can also watch some of his courses on Youtube. I'd even suggest that, as you can do that with your couple or a group of people and then discuss each step of the methodology. I think they should teach this in schools, it's so needed in our world. There's a risk of overdoing it, so please be aware of not NVC'ing the hell out of everyone and everything. But when applied cleanly and lovingly, this can change everything!

Articulate and concise explanation of academia - much of which remains true despite several decades separating current colleges from the time in which Birnbaum wrote this work. Highly recommended reading for anyone interested in working as an academic administrator!

Although dry in many places, this book provides a nice overview of the administrative styles common on various campuses. It is descriptive rather than prescriptive, but outlines the advantages and disadvantages of each style of governance.

Good book for any college admin to read.

Excellent overview of the various different college structures. Author worked hard to create analogies for how college systems were linked, but after getting into middle and later chapters the anlogies made some sense. A good introduction to, as the title says, how colleges work.

Great book to understand the basic "layers" that worked at the organizational level of colleges.

I was assigned this book for a class in organizational theory for higher education. When I first saw the age of the book I was at first skeptical that it might not be applicable to the higher ed environment in 2011. I was wrong! Birnbaum's book was well written and I found that his ideas are just as applicable, and more importantly still useful, today. I highly recommend it as a starting point for understanding "how colleges work."

I have to state a few things before I go into this review. At my university this course is supposed to come after calculus 3 (vector calculus i.e. triple and double integration, vector fields, etc) and after differential equations. Also usually after a numerical analysis course, I took a graduate level numerical analysis and methods course before I started this course. I also had DE and linear algebra finished so overall my math background is very solid. I also took physics up to quantum for electives so my physics background is also solid.With all that being said this book takes a physics and mathematical approach over the standard engineering textbooks out there. So a lot of the equations that it derives at times will be a little different then what you will use on problems. You will also need to know to make a lot of assumptions that it never goes over. This is where a strong professor comes in. You will need to take a professor that not only derives equations but explains the assumptions for each type of problem. This will cause a lot of the double and triple integrals to become a simple integration many times. There are quite a number of times you will need to know how to set up a differential equation and also be able to solve it using different methods. There are problems were you will need to interpolate a function over a interval [a,b] in order to derive an answer. Linear systems for multiple unknowns are common in some problems as well.The problems lies in the fact that the examples in the book are VERY weak at times and do not show how to go about doing a lot of these things that I mentioned. This means that you are limited in teaching yourself, unless of course you use the solution manual, which also skips many steps. You will need to fill in the steps yourself. Also don't think you can run to Chegg a lot of their answers are wrong and also skip steps, since Chegg just copies the solution manual for 95% of problems.Overall it is a good book if you have a solid foundation but if you are missing courses that this book assumes you have taken you may be in for a rough ride. I cannot give it five stars since I believe a textbook should be able to teach a student 80% of material in a course especially at the price charged.Hope this helps!

Five years ago, I took my first course in fluid mechanics using this book by F. White; now I am a graduate student in the field. This book was the first to instill upon me a desire to pursue advanced studies in the dynamics of fluids.The major strength of this book is that it is remarkably un-assuming of the reader. Most of the topics discussed are self-contained with much of the physics and mathematics expressed within accessible bounds to a young, becoming Mechanical Engineer. In particular, the book contains many good, fully worked-out examples and problems.To begin, the first section is on hydrostatics, and although the physics is fairly simple, we observe how to deal with the difficulties of handling the geometry of the system. In particular, we learn how to calculate force and moment on a dam of varying profile.The next section focuses on control volume (CV) analysis: this systematic technique of problem solving is perhaps the monkey wrench of mechanical engineering. A very very large number of problems can be solved with this approach, and many more can be approximated with it. F. White does a fantastic job of using CV analysis with regards to the most important physical quantities: momentum, moment, energy, and mass. Again, the book is filled with a number of fully-worked examples and even more end-of-chapter problems.We next move into the heart of fluid dynamics, that is the differential equations of momentum and mass. Here, the author takes a lot of care in deriving the partial differential equations (PDE's) with the aid of numerous illustrations. Illustrations in engineering context cannot be under-estimated, and the author seems whole-heartedly agree. Although the equations of motion are not derived in the most fundamental way, it is quite insightful and wholly sufficient for an engineer beginning their training. In this way, however, I believe that physics students *would not benefit* from this approach. Although I am ignorant of resources more germane to their field of study, I cannot recommend this text to them.The last topic I will include in this review regards the coverage of viscous effects in duct flow. This will most likely be the students first foray into non-dimensional parameters and the text justifiably over-emphasizes its importance. When I first studied this topic in class, the purpose of non-dimensionalising variables seemed abstruse and round-about; however, today I am very grateful for the efforts spent on this mode of thought since I can now appreciate the science of approximation and the error associated with the computation of quantities of various orders of magnitude.The text covers a few more topics, but the key engineering tools are mentioned above. For a more advanced/thorough/mathematical text, look to Kundu's classical book "Fluid Mechanics" as a follow-up.

Exactly what I expected. It is a real shame that the US version cost over 10x's more than this book.

This is the special Indian edition, meaning the number values in the problem sections will be different compared to a standard 8th edition book.

I used this book for an undergrad fluid mechanics course. The book is well written, however I eventually gave up on trying to read and understand it. It seems is written by a really smart person and most of the time I found the material in the book to be over my head. A lot of my classmates thought the same thing too. I often thought that this textbook is more suited for graduate level students.However the book keeps true to fluid mechanics and does not include a lot of unnecessary "filler" material that some textbooks do.By filler material I mean stuff that is related to the subject but not necessary for the the understanding of the material.

I have several past editions of this guide and find it invaluable for identifying lures. I have identified unknown lures for Russ Lewis for his 6 book series and in the 6th edition of this guide identified an unknown lure... the Ping-a-tee...while it was still in production!!I don't rely on any of these guides for actual but only relative pricing value since condition is a very critical factor in the value of all fishing tackle. This guide along with the 6 volume set by Russell Lewis of more modern fishing tackle really covers anything you will probably find in any tackle box !

I already owned the sixth edition of this book, but purchased the eight edition in hopes that more information would be presented on some of the more obscure lure manufacturers. In some instances, this is the case, however, it seems that the author abbreviated much of the information on the more popular manufacturers in order to save space for the new companies added to the eighth edition. In many cases, I find myself still relying heavily on the older edition. Using both books seems to be the best solution.

This 670-page book contains much more than just descriptions of lures. I got the 5th Edition(1999) which serves me, a novice, very well. It contains lure descriptions, tips on collecting,and an expansive list of lures. I'm certain it will be a valuable reference as I move forward. The cost was a small fraction of the latest edition. I've already found information on a couple of lures that folks on Ebay had listed as "manufacturer unknown.

my husband received an old tackle box full of lures from a friend who just did not want it any more. we knew there were some from the early 20's to 40's,other than that we knew nothing about them. we found several books we thought might help us. we had a tough time deciding between this one and several others on amazon. at the last min we decided to get this one and are we glad. has wonderful history, easy to use index. it is a wealth of information. we have identified dozens of tackle. this book is HIGHLY recommended if you have alot of old lures.

A great book--an unbelievable amount of pictures and information. You'd have to search the internet for hours, maybe days, to find the pictures and descriptions contained here. Very impressive.
