Loved the book and the whole series. This book puts to bed her sad story of being thrown out of her home by her father. The setting and characters are wonderful. I would recommend to all mystery livers.
Fantastic storytelling, enjoyable mysteries, interesting characters. Really a perfect cozy mystery series. I have enjoyed having a peek into Melissa Craig's life.
4.5 out of 5.Great piece that could serve as a standalone.
cozy mystery novel
4 and 1 / 2 starsMelissa “Mel†Craig has finally closed the book on her fictional detective. She feels good about finishing her final book about him and plans to also leave the real-life detecting to the police as well. Her boyfriend, Ken Harris has joined a private detective firm in the US and has moved to America. She receives an unexpected visit from a friend of hers and Ken's. Detective Waters drops a bombshell of Mel. Her father has been murdered and her mother is a suspect in his killing. Mel hasn't spoken to heard from her parents for the past thirty years. They threw her out of the house when they discovered she was pregnant “with out benefit of clergy,†as Mel put it.When she arrives at her mother Sylvia's house, she is shocked and surprised to learn that her mother was afraid of her father and not all was well in the marriage. Sylvia says she wanted to contact Mel in those missing years, but Mel's father wouldn't let her. She begs Mel to find the real killer of her father Frank. Sylvia is arrested for the murder. Evidence is found in her home. Sylvia tries to explain it and Mel has a very strange encounter with her mother.Mel and her agent, Joe visit Sylvia's friends before Frank forebode her to meet them any longer. They get some very interesting reactions to their visits and learn some surprising news as well.A journalist named Denis Botting beards Melissa outside her mother's door and intimates that he knows a great deal about the local area and its people and could help with her inquiries. Mel reluctantly and suspiciously agrees to work with him.Melissa begins to put the pieces together; investigating in spite of the fact that DI Adair does not want her to. Sylvia continues to act very strange. Her moods are all over the place. She says something and then denies she ever said it. She urges her mother to see a doctor. In a sudden epiphany, Mel knows who committed the murders. DI Adair isn't interested.I was surprised at the identity of the killer, but the motive was as old as the hills. This is perhaps my favorite Melissa Craig book so far. While it was a departure from her “village†murders, it held my interest and I truly enjoyed it. The writing is very good and the characters likable. I have a little trouble with Mel's naivete – her being a writer of detective fiction, one would think...well. DI Adair was deplorably incompetent. She wanted an easy answer and wouldn't listen at all to her partner. I love that Melissa has finally found a solid love interest!I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for forwarding to me a copy of this absolutely great book for me to read, enjoy and review.
Our heroine is Melissa 'Mel' Craig, a successful British author of mystery novels. This is actually the tenth in the Melissa Craig novels written by successful British author of mystery novels Betty Rowlands, but Murder at the Old House is completely stand alone. After thirty years of estrangement Melissa is notified by the police in her village in Cotswold of the gruesome murder of her father Frank Ross, and the possible arrest for that murder of her mother Sylvia in Thames Valley. It is obvious early on that the father was abusive in a psychological way with both Melissa and Sylvia, and that Sylvia is confused and in poor health. Melissa is tasked by her mother to find the murderer of her father, much to the ire of DI Adair, the young police detective inspector in charge of the murder case.Rowlands writes a tight, fast tale, with a clean, easily followed story line and realistic characters. Her descriptive passages take you to spring in England. She is an author to follow. I am pleased to recommend her to friends and family.I received a free electronic copy of this novel from Netgalley, author Betty Rowlands, and publisher Bookouture in exchange for an honest review. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me.
Melissa Craig is a mystery writer who has finished her latest novel and now has time to enjoy the arrival of spring in the Cotswolds. When she is notified that her estranged father has been killed, she travels to a nearby town to be with her mother, from whom she has been estranged for thirty years. Melissa has tried to forget she had parents after they kicked her out of their home when she found out she was pregnant. After reuniting with her mother and hearing her story, it occurs to Melissa that her mother will undoubtedly be the prime suspect in her father’s murder. With her mother begging her to find a way to exonerate her, there is another murder. This is the tenth book in the Melissa Craig series, but can be read as a standalone. Melissa is a well-drawn character as are the other characters. The book is well-written and moves along at a fast pace. Most readers will be hard pressed to put the book down because they know there’s another twist on the next page or two. For readers who prefer their mysteries cozy, this is the book for them. If cozies aren’t your cup of tea, pick this book up, you’re sure to fall in love with Melissa as she tries to solve her father’s murder, and you might even be tempted to find book one in the series.
I received this book via Netgalley and the publisher, in return for an honest review. Returning to the Cotswolds for the 10th book in the Melissa Craig series is always enjoyable. This can be read as a stand-alone. I like the change in location for this book from the others in the series. This time, Melissa is contacted by her estranged mother, only to learn that her mother is suspected of killing her father. After almost 30 years without contact, Melissa returns to her home town and tries to help, while dealing with lots and lots of emotional challenges. Finding out about her parents’ lives and watching her interactions with her mother makes this an interesting addition to this series. I recommend this book.
