Rabaul was a place of supreme importance in the Pacific - a sheltered, protected fleet anchorage. The Japanese seized New Britain, the island upon which the town of Rabaul was built and Simpson Harbor early in the war as a bastion in the South Pacific. In this Air Campaign #2 "Rabaul 1943-44", author Mark Lardas gives us the history of the air campaign to wear down and isolate this Pacific fortress.The genesis of the campaign was the realization that it would be prohibitively expensive in terms of lives, resources and time to invade and conquer Rabaul with its airfields, aircraft, ships in harbor and many thousands of troops. Therefore, it was decided to render Rabaul impotent and isolated. This would be performed by an air campaign to destroy Japanese air assets on Rabaul and seize surrounding islands.After the author's introduction, he lays out the capabilities and weapons on the opposing sides as well as the opposing objectives, Lardas then chronicles the course of the campaign as the Fifth Air Force and Comairsols (Command Air, Solomons) combined to relentlessly attack Japanese airbases, duel with Japanese Army and Naval aircraft and destroy ground facilities. The author details how the campaign was attritional, wearing down and draining the Japanese. Not only did it draw an increasing number of Japanese army pilots, but the Japanese transferred veteran carrier pilots from their remaining carriers to the Rabaul battle where they were shot down and killed, leaving Japan's carriers bereft of veteran pilots.The author does a good job of relating the course of battles and raids, detailing the air bombing attacks and the losses to both sides. The Fifth Air Force from MacArthur's SWPA commanded by Gen. George Kenney who determined the tactics to be used. This is a very good account of the campaign and the battles of Rabaul.I have a few points of contention with the author's conclusions. Firstly, he tends to place greater emphasis on Comairsols than is due since it was the Fifth Air Force's heavy and medium bombers that did a disproportionate amount of the damage and bore the brunt of early battles before the Japanese were worn down. Secondly, the author makes the odd comment that Rabaul required closer islands to be taken so new airfields could be constructed for single-engine fighters as two-engine fighters (the P-38) weren't capable of defeating the Japanese. The P-38's performance in this and the New Guinea campaign shows this notion to be invalid. Add to that the fact that America's two highest-scoring aces both flew P-38s, I don't know where the author gets that from.None the less, it's a good story about a lesser-known air campaign that was wholly successful and had far-reaching effects on the war in the Pacific. It also has all the period photos, maps and color artwork we expect from Osprey. Solid four stars.

The solution was the risky but brilliant Operation Cartwheel: Isolate Rabaul and take away its offensive capabilities..."Rabaul 1943-44" is an Osprey Air Campaign Series book, authored by Mark Lardas with illustrations by Mark Postelwaite. The focus is on the multi-service air campaign against Rabaul during 1943-1944. That campaign progressed through continuing air attacks, supporting by a growing ring of Allied airfields around Rabaul. Its outcome was by no means assured, as the author's narrative demonstrates.The book provides a comparison of the plans and forces of the opponents, along with some nice thumbnail descriptions of the various aircraft fielded by both sides. The heart of the narrative is of course the description of the air campaign itself, supported by maps, illustrations, period photographs, and some well-done battle diagrams. Well-recommended as a clear, concise and understandable account of a complex campaign.
This is a quick read about the battle of Rabaul in '43-'44. Maps and photos are good, I can use this book to teach or give tours (I work in a military museum). For my uses, this book is an ideal length with the appropriate detail.I have an extensive library on many of the Pacific battles of WWII. The problem is if I have to research a question, a big book can take time. This book will give me a quick answer and I can use it to point to a certain spot in a detailed book.
Rabaul, is an area of WW2 that I am not very knowledgable. The book was very informative in covering the overall campaign as always offered great maps, graphics, and pictures. As an aside, my father-in-law, who as a rear gunner in an SBD, attacked Rabaul on numerous occasions, thoroughly enjoyed looking at the maps and graphs and remising about his service over Rabaul.
It's informative in the sense it tells you what happened where and when, but I got bogged down with dates and places. Would have been nice to have more first-hand accounts from pilots involved based on historical records. I'd also have liked to learn more about the planes, specs, performance, etc. but a lot of that is kind of glossed over.
