This English version of volume one of the best stories ever told by Japan in my opinion. If you are familiar with the video games and/or films on Blu Ray and DVD, then you know what to expect. For those of you who are fortunate enough to be experiencing this amazing series for the first time, get ready to enjoy. The students who have just arrived at Hope's Peak Academy High School all have 2 things in common. None of them can remember how they got there and all of them have their own personal Ultimate talent/ability that they are the absolute best at in their age group. Mix the lovable artwork and character design in with an insane psychopathic bear mascot called Monokuma (aka the Headmaster) and add the killing game that follows and what you get is THE MOST underrated told stories of the generation. Its brilliant, and while the PS4 Danganronpa game is the elite of the few options at hand, this book does it justice and even adds a little here and there that weren't present in the other 2 versions!!
For those of you who've played the game, this volume covers the prologue and the first chapter in their entirety.I am honestly amazed at how good this was. I've played the game (amazing) and seen the anime (god awful), and I was wondering how the manga adaptation would be, so I bought this. And it's great! One of my main issues with the anime is that it doesn't give you enough time to get to know the characters before they start kicking the bucket, but the manga fixes this by keeping a lot of the character interaction scenes, as well as the first Maizono Free Time scene (which the player is required to view in the game). It does switch some other things around (such as starting the kids in the gym instead of the entrance hall, or putting the sword in Naegi's room right from the get-go), but the scenes it DOES keep work wonders for the story.The investigation, thank goodness, was actually shown, rather than provided in a montage (cough cough ANIME). That allowed the trial to contain all the details it had in the game, making for a much more fulfilling experience. After all, one of the main draws of this series happens to be the Class Trials. Another interesting thing it did was give dialogue during the execution scene, which was silent (save for BGM and SFX) in the game and anime. Good on you, Tsukimi-sensei!As for the translation, this is easily the best I've seen for this franchise. Dark Horse reused a lot of the terminology used by NIS America (e.g. "Hope's Peak Academy," "Ultimate," "Princess Piggles"), but changed what they needed to to make it better. Monokuma's speech is much more fitting of his character in this version, and it more closely fits the feel of how he speaks in Japanese. Dialogue sounds clear and natural while retaining all the meaning it needs to. I especially like how they rendered a certain line that comes back way later (veterans of the series, you know what character I'm talking about). This is the quality of translation that other manga publishers need to reach. Good on you, Dark Horse!Additionally, at the end of the volume, DH included some fan letters that were actually pretty insightful. I wholeheartedly agree with the first one about the marketing for the English-language version of the anime, ESPECIALLY the trailer, which spoils every single execution in the series. I had known about the demo of the game, but I never knew about the intricacies of the mystery in it, and it was interesting to read what that fan had to say about it. Hilariously, although Dark Horse's response to this letter agrees that spoilers should be avoided, the fan art on the facing page spoils the biggest plot twist in the entire game. Brilliant, guys.In short, this far exceeded my expectations, and I wait for the next volume with bated breath. Keep up the good work, Dark Horse!
brought slight changes that were different than the game and anime its based on but, I like all changes as long they don't ruin or steer away from the plot.. which this issue did wonderfully
I understand why people might like the game more but it really dose as good a job as any adaptation
Love the manga of this game. Played the game and this tells the story quite well. It's only the beginning, but it does go into a lot better detail than the anime. This is a good read even if you're not a fan of the series, but of course someone who has played the game will love it even more.
