I ordered this book for myself and received a color copy with very beautiful and appetizing photos of the food/recipes. I like it so well I bought a second one to give as a gift and received a black and white copy with no pictures of the food/recipes. I sent it back and requested another color copy but this morning received another black and white version. Maybe I'm being too picky but I think the black and white "newspaper print" approach is not a good look for a cookbook.

once again...this was ordered for my 82 yo mother who is constantly looking for better diets and choices to keep her here cooking and doing yard work that she enjoys...she has enjoyed this book.

The book is very easy to read and interesting if you are planning to start an Anti-Inflammation diet. I would highly recommend this book to you.

Very informative and written so anyone can understand it

I have tried a few tips and they are working for me. If I could stick with it, this book is key to my healthy living. I have told friends with same or similar issues and they also purchased the book.

Haven't read this book yet but the production quality is very poor. The pages were either printer poorly or cut poorly. Half of the page numbers are missing because they were cut off.

Thank goodness for this book! It is a treasure-trove of easy-to-understand information, and as the writers make clear from the beginning, one can "jump in anywhere" and find whatever is needed at the moment. A great publication, as easy to handle as it is to read (for those of use with "older" hands). HIGHLY recommend this for the health-conscious, and those determined to become so, of any age.

The book arrived quickly and is in very good shape for a used copy. It is informing me about inflammation, a condition I kept hearing about without really understanding what it is and how to deal with it. The book suggests grocery items to purchase and those to avoid, which is very helpful. Anyone with arthritis could benefit from reading it and following its guidelines.

Purchased this to add to my Classics of Western Spirituality collection. When I get around to reading it, probably years from now, I'll probably review it then.

Do you want to read a book of fairy-tales written by by a little-known Hassidic Rabbi, eccentric even by the standards of Hassidic Rabbis, a tormented soul in spite of his deep Jewish faith, absorbed in abstruse Kabbalistic speculations, and possibly subject to Messianic delusions?It may not sound very attractive, but believe it or not this is one of the most beautiful, haunting, profound, mysterious, re-readable and unforgettable books I have ever discovered. Although I've known these stories for 20 years, some episodes still move me to tears.It's an open secret that traditional fairy-tales are spiritual teachings in costume. All children know this, and absorb these teachings at an early age without being able to explain them. The authority here was the Sri Lankan scholar Ananda Coomaraswamy, if you can find his wonderful essays."Thumbelina" is the most beautiful, concise, complete outline of the spiritual life you could hope to find. "Beauty and the Beast", "East of the Sun, West of the Moon", are also outstanding. (Let's not get carried away. You'd have a hard task to find mystical significance in "Goldilocks and the Three Bears".)Rabbi Nahman takes over the set vocabulary of Eastern European fairy-tales, with their Princesses and Emperors, speaking animals and magical objects, complicated quests and royal children exchanged at birth with commoners, and adds some stock characters from Jewish folklore. The stories are said to contain concealed meanings referring to the Kabbalistic universe of Rabbi Isaac Luria: but given that no two commentators agree on what these meanings are, you can safely ignore them and just read for the story.A warning. These stories are like those transcribed by field-workers, stories from oral tradition never subjected to literary reworking. They can be oddly inconsequential, leaving out crucial matters while including the seemingly irrelevant. They often have a "Suddenly! ...nothing happened" quality, and they don't so much end as just stop.The Story of the Heart and the Spring, in part 5 of "The Seven Beggars", made me gasp and drop the book the first time I read it. You finish these Tales with a sigh, feeling, like the narrator of "The Ancient Mariner", sadder but wiser, having learnt something heart-rendingly true you'll never forget... but unable to explain what it is.

Rabbi Nachman is one of the legendary figures of the Jewish world. He has a unique, if not quite understandable position in a number of ways. When he died no leader was allowed to replace him and for the Bretslav Hasidim even today he is the leader. He had a problematic and short life and his teachings bear the mark and wisdom of having suffered much, and learned much from the suffering. Still as a Hasidic master his Torah is a Torah of joy in depth in living in the life of Torah. His stories are mystical and mysterious. They seem to have both a fairy- tale quality and an enigmatic yearning tone. I personally have always had difficulty understanding the tales. This volume contains explanation by the translator Arnold Band and commentary by philosophy professor Joseph Dan.For me the Tales however wondrous have always been secondary to the discursive homiletic teachings. I would recommend to anyone who reads these tales and is in some way moved by them to examine the thought of Rabbi Nachman in depth. He is a tremendously inspiring spiritual teacher, one of incredible depth and beauty.

This is an important book, grappling with what will replace liberal democracy. The Social Singularity contains plenty of insights and is worth your time.However, the sloppy editing and heavy use of buzzwords and obscure jargon are distracting and will likely impede a wide readership. Further, even though I largely agree with the author, he did not offer compelling explanations for why many people will relinquish the status quo (largess) and support dreams such as polyarchy and the separation of territorial and non-territorial governance.

I met book author Max Borders at FEEcon 2018 where I heard him speak a couple times. In one session (itself very enjoyable, I thought), he said, "If you like these ideas, I have books with me." At the end of his speech, I marched up to the front to buy one. Another younger fellow was present talking to Max but not buying. Max had invited those who could to support students who couldn't afford to buy the book and that was apparently the case for this young fellow. So, I bought my copy and paid for his.These days, I'm an ebook reader. As I read the paper book I bought at FEEcon, I kept wanting to tap a word to hear a definition and, funny thing, that didn't work. I resolved to buy the Kindle version when it came out. It did and I did, so that's how I bought it three times. It was worth it every time. BTW, the Kindle version was a super bargain.I liked this book so much that while I finished the paper edition I will read it again, soon, in Kindle where I can highlight important passages and I have many to mark. I'll also be able to look up those words.I found Max to be a very gifted writer. Not only are the messages very intriguing, but his writing style is very satisfying, his use of language is impressive, and he uses many turns of phrase to great effect. Even beyond the messages I found extremely important, I thoroughly enjoyed this read.THE IDEASMax describes the political environment in tech-like terms, for instance, calling the evolving future of governance as a new OS (Operating System), a social OS -- from which you can begin to interpret the title of the book.Max introduces many new concepts and I won't try to cover them here, but let it suffice that if you value individual freedom and believe, as I do, that future technologies and methods will make today's present political system look antiquated (I think it is already), then you will LOVE this book.However, whatever you believe, I think any thinking person will completely enjoy Max's perspectives done in that writing style and voice that I found so endearing.I enthusiastically recommend this book, absolutely if you consider yourself involved with or interested by the freedom or liberty movement. Even if that does not describe you, I believe most readers will enjoy Max's ideas.Buy it! Heck, buy two or three...

I can have Utopian beliefs when it comes to the future. Peace, love, happiness, no more world hunger or world wars and everyone having a roof over their heads. I'm also a realist. I doubt that will ever happen. There's too much power to be had by being authoritarian.Max Borders, in The Social Singularity, does an amazing job balancing my Utopian and realist views of a decentralized future.This book should be read by all people who believe a decentralized future is better than the one we have today. Max does an extremely good job of combining the ideas of brilliant minds while adding his own, well-thought-out, insights and takeaways in an easy to digest manner.If you're starting down the path of decentralized governance, the future of crypto, or divergence from democracy, this is a great place to start as well. Not only will the book give you a good base understanding, you'll also come away with 5-10 authors or books to read that'll expand your knowledge of the decentralized mindset and the well-rounded mindset one needs to thrive in the future.The Social Singularity is a phenomenal book that takes the cake in concisely explaining the framework of a decentralized system.

Max’s book suggests that a system is coming that will maximize prosperity and minimize coercion, without our underlying human nature having to change and without having to pick sides in a system we’re forced to accept.I didn’t expect to love this book so much. Max has become a master of persuasion and an intellectual force of nature. This book is going to totally reframe the way people think about societal change.

What a fantastic book! At times I wondered if I was going to get through it but at the end of the day, i couldn't put it down. What a sad but real lesson about our own history.

I was born in 1935 and lived in southern Kansas until 1955. I remember some of the dust storms as if it was yesterday. I recently read my mother's 1935 diary and she frequently mentioned the terrible dust storms. I was very young during the Great Depression, but I still remember Mills, which were ten to equal one penny. I was listening to the radio when Franklin D. Rosevelt announced the attack on Pearl Harbor and December 7th, 1941 as a day that will live in infamy. My grandparents lived on a farm in northern Oklahoma. To visit there was a trip into the past. They had no electricity, no running water, an out house, kerosene lanterns, kerosene stoves, and a real ice box. They are all gone now and I can no longer ask what the conditions were in their early years. This book helped me see into the past of my own relatives.

I don't normally pay much attention to the title of a book. The title's primary purpose to me is to catch my attention when I'm in a book store browsing. After it catches my eye I immediately resort to the GR scan feature to learn what GR members have to say about the book. In the final analysis what I remember about a book is what's behind the title. Frequently, when speaking about a book I've read with a friend I will be completely unable to recall the title. This book and its title are entirely different. I can't recall a more appropriately titled book than this one, "The Worst Hard Time".My parents were children of the of the Depression. During my childhood they told us stories of how that national tragedy affected their childhoods and that of their friends and neighbors. We all probably have read stories and seen photos of the Depression and many of us have read "The Grapes of Wrath" or seen the movie. This book is not about any of that. This book is not about the people that fled the Dust Bowl. This book is about the people that stayed and attempted to exist on next to nothing, literally. Pride and independence prevented them from seeking aid until things went beyond desperate, way beyond. What is also remarkable about this book is to read it now in a time when we live among people that for selfish and political reasons are adamant in their rejection of science and in climate change. The book makes clear that after the government finally addressed the crisis following FDR's election that the cause of the Dust Bowl was man and his ignorance and his greed. Sadly, the people that need to read this history never will as it fails to affirm what they wish to believe and profit by. What this book does affirm is the consequences of man's ignorance and greed when dealing with the forces of nature. To this day the area afflicted by these vices of man has not healed.The author's story spans primarily the '30's but he delivers a necessary background to set up his story and the lives of those he uses to illustrate the scope of the Dust Bowl tragedy. In his telling of this history he employs the lives of several local residents in and around the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles. The stories of these people really humanizes the narrative and magnifies its impact. While weather reports, crops statistics, land cultivation data etc are all helpful and put a scale on the disaster it's reading about the daily lives of people that lived through it that give this book its wow factor. The impact this disaster had on the health of the people living there was something that I never considered. I always thought the limit of the tragedy was in the fertility of the soil blowing away. I did not know that these winds were an almost daily occurrence and that breathable air was a precious commodity and "dust pneumonia" was a virulent killer. Who would ever think a person walking or working outside could be suddenly caught in one of these dust storms and suffocate to death. That the detrimental affect of the Dust Bowl on the health of residents was something that would have required a career of coal mining yet these folks were being afflicted within a few years. This is an extremely compelling history whose worth today is enormous and we should all learn about the Worst Hard Time. I highly recommend this book. (less)

This book is so amazingly timely, not just for the aspect of the man-made contributions to natural disaster happening at a time of economic hardship, but also for a lot of the political aspects of it, and of course for the human aspects. People don't change so much.I did watch the Dust Bowl miniseries first, and they do cover some of the same ground, though with different focuses, but I feel like you get more details from this book.To be fair, it is rough. There are a few main people that you follow and they are constantly defeated by the land, dying broke, or physically broken, and any chances for renewal and success have to wait for the next generation. Even as things get better, there are indications that we are on the same path, not just in other places, but even right there with the demands on the Oglalla.That's why it is so timely, and so important. Humans don't change much, and they will keep making the same mistakes over and over again unless information, and education, can change that.

An amazingly powerful book about the 1930s dust bowl, how we got it, and what was done about it (often, very little). In my opinion it excels over earlier works because it gives causes for the phenomenon that plagued the Central States for years over and above the usual "dry weather and strong winds." I won't deny the book has its more pedantic aspects when it gets into climatology and such, but otherwise it's so good I would recommend it for high-school history courses -- the advanced ones, anyway. The paperback has been sharply reduced in price at Amazon and other vendors.

As someone who's lived on the East Coast my whole life, a continuous forest with ideal farmland, I took for granted the hardship that settlers faced as they moved out West and decided to settle. However, it was also baffling how incompetent the government was in not only supporting the destruction of natural habitats without repercussions, but also the sheer idiocy they fell back in in dealing with the situation.Timothy Egan's dive into the Great Dust Bowl is superb. His precise, narrative writing does much to draw the reader in and make its real-life characters easier to relate to. He gives personalities to these people who refused to bow down to nature and for that they were punished, in a way. But punished not only by the land, but also by their own government. Egan details the slow spiral of the Great Plains from lush prairie land to desiccated, desolate hardpan without a hint of green. He compliments the personal narratives of these farmers with in-depth historical analysis of the towns and the governments working behind the scenes, while also providing a sort of biological analysis of the ecosystem and how it rapidly fell apart.

All they share this common formula which is revealed in this book.And I immediately i bought this book and use it not only in my low budget films I produce. This book outlines different psychological theories put together by some of the big names in psychology (Freud, Jung, Adler) and some lesser-known ones as well to help screenwriters add psychological depth to their characters (and plot as well).As I read this book, I found I was able to apply most of the theories to one script I'm working on. It seems to me that all these different theories enable screenwriters to approach their characters from several different ways. So now the question becomes "Which theory can I use?" as opposed to "Which one must I use?". Very helpful indeed.

it's a good book. I am 1/2 way through. no book I know of on film is great - but this is good. loads of films mentioned to support each point made.i am using it for a class on Film and Psychology.

Using for homeschool film studies course. Interesting text, well-suited for our purposes.

Quite good. I liked it more than others on the subject . I would just only add some more examples , especially regarding films from outside Holywood , or not just mainstream.

This book is not only inspirational for screenwriters, helping them understand how various psychological theories actually work and could be applied to creating characters, but it is a very good, succinct overview of psychological theories in general. Reading this helps screenwriters to ground their work in how people actually function.

A lot of food for thought here. The book describes various psychological theories (Freud, May, Jung) and applies them to creating characters and story. Good book. Why aren't there more books like this? Stories are about human behavior, human feelings; i.e.: psychology. Sheesh! Tons of books about format and structure, little on story content, character motivation.I also recommend "Creating Chracters", by Howard Lauther.

This is the kind of material that can be used to overcome writer's block. It is not so much about how to write as it is about content and character motivation. It is easy reading with relevant examples. I will be using this until the pages yellow and the binding cracks.
