I read this 53 years after its publication (just 10 days before the 2016 US Presidential election). The first essay (a letter to his nephew) was written on the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. The second essay, "Down at the Cross," makes up over 110 pages of this book and explores a few major experiences and sentiments.A number of points/instances jump out:1) As a young man, Baldwin believed he could do anything a young white man could do. This terrified his father, whose experiences taught him that white power constantly sought to limit, exploit or desecrate black people (particularly young black men). As time went by and Baldwin grew up, he had experienced a great amount of injustice at the hands (or through the words) of white people. He was quite forceful in his writing about how much oppression blacks experienced everyday, and how white people refused to acknowledge this reality, even when it was presented to them (sadly, this resonates in 2016).2) As a teenager, Baldwin served in the Christian church and delivered sermons. "I felt that I was committing a crime in talking about the gentle Jesus, in telling them to reconcile themselves to their misery on earth in order to gain the crown of eternal life." This is one of the all time great criticisms of the Christian religion (and obviously Mr. Baldwin was not the first one to offer it up).3) He wrote about the hypocrisy of the ministers collecting money from poor blacks who scrubbed floors but used that money to drive around in Cadillacs and live in nice houses.4) The spreading of the gospel "was an absolutely indispensable justification for planting of the flag." Again, this is not a new thought, but it is interesting coming from a black man who served as a youth minister.5) There are a brutal few paragraphs about the fact that blacks served in the armed forces in WW2 and fought in segregated units and despite their service, were still outcasts back in the states. Baldwin ties their service and the forces the allies conquered as having a direct influence on the desegregation of the military, society and the schools.6) "In the United States, violence and heroism have been made synonymous except when it comes to blacks." This is still a fair and valid point in 2016.7) Mr. Baldwin had a dinner with Elijah Muhammed in Chicago. He wrote about Elijah's power, charisma, singular focus and their talk over dinner. Mr. Baldwin is critical of Mr. Muhammed's teachings, though he does not offer them up during their dinner. Mr. Muhammed is gracious and polite throughout the entirety of the evening. Before one considers Mr. Baldwin a fringe black radical, one must read about his evening with Elijah Muhammed.8) "The American Negro has the great advantage of having never believed that collection of myths to which white Americans cling: that their ancestors were all freedom loving heroes, that they were born in the greatest country the world has ever seen, or that Americans are invincible in battle and wise in peace." This was controversial and incendiary in 1963, and it remains so in 2016. Again, it is fascinating and disturbing how divided white and blacks still are in America in their perceptions of this nation and its history.In the end, Mr. Baldwin stresses that both races must work together or that our nation will perish. The meaning of the title is explained in the last lines of the second essay.The second essay could be organized better - perhaps divided into chapters. Mr. Baldwin moves from point to point, sometimes slowly and sometimes very quickly. While his observations are interesting and often jarring, it would have been better for him to back them up with facts, statistics and other information. There are times that the words and thoughts run on - the reader needs to pause and take a breather.

This is a book to read with a pen! My copy, brand new, and fresh from the mailbox now has underlining everywhere and notes filling the margins. The language is beautiful in this book and there is a lot of wisdom to gather. This is my first James Baldwin and I crave more!The book consists of two letters, a short one written to a nephew and a longer one written to discuss his thoughts and feelings about race, religion, and life. This is the most beautiful description in the entire book. I cannot possibly think of a more exquisite way to word how James sees his brother and how we often see those we have watched grow up."Other people cannot see what I see whenever I look into your father’s face for behind your father’s face as it is today are all those other faces which were his. Let him laugh and I see a cellar your father does not remember and a house he does not remember and I hear in his present laughter his laughter as a child."Baldwin starts his letter by informing his nephew on how black people can be destroyed if they believe what some white people think about them. He discusses a hidden message telling black people to settle for mediocrity rather than striving for excellence. Baldwin believes that black people need to know their history and where they came from so that there will be “no limit to where you can go.”"…We, with love, shall force our brothers to see themselves as they are, to cease fleeing from reality and begin to change it."

I am a huge fan of James Baldwin, this is the third book that I have bought from him. This is by far one of the best books written by him. I am so happy that I chose to buy this book, I do not regret a thing. It truly is astonishing how not much has changed between the races in America since 1963. James Baldwin is such an amazing writer, this book is extremely well written. The use of words in this book are utilized in a way that make you feel as though you are within Baldwin's story. Overall, buy this book if you are interested in learning in the about the history and culture of black individuals during 60s. Also, buy this book if you are interested in reading a quality book with quality writing.

James Baldwin's "The Fire Next Time" is more a brilliant, masterfully constructed Supreme Court Opinion than it is a novel. And whereas I truly loved his analysis and opinions of the Negro problem in America, I still prefer his old fashion, novels with the numerous unforgettable characters, boundary breaking storylines, and sublime and poetic writing style.In 2015, my great contemporary literary discovery was Don Delillo; and now in 2017 and 18 my great, contemporary, literary discovery is James Baldwin. Sadly, neither man ever won a Pulitzer prize and unless a miracle happens and they give Mr. DeLillo Nobel Prize neither man would have won a Nobel Peace Prize. Simply too busy giving out the prize to Bob Dylan."The Fire Next Time" might not be for everyone, but it is, in my opinion, just another wonderful addition and indication of how great a writer and thinker Mr. Baldwin truly was... And forever will be remembered as such.

I read this book in a few days then re-read it. It took me 6 weeks to re-read this book. Only because I would watch the Godzilla movie then re-read the chapter about the movie to understand the geo-political, socio-ecominic, and cultural underpinning themes in each movie. This book correctly explains the late Showa period movies were not "chessy" but still had profound Japanese cultural references current to it's times when made.This book is a primer for any student to the rise and fall of the Japanese movie industry with Toho Studios as one of the last standing. The studio system of contract actors, producers, writers and directors to include Akira Kurosawa, product merchandising and vertical integration of studio to theaters is explained in detail in this book.The book is well layout in chronological of the Godzilla Movies with chapters dedicated to the American or Americanization of Godzilla Movies. It explains the re-editing of the Americanize versions to fit the Geo-Political climate at its time of release.If your a casual Godzilla Fan like me, or a serious fan of Godzilla who wants to learn more about the Big G, this book is for you. It should be on on your bookshelf.I hopefully look forward to the author's 3rd edition to include Shin Godzilla and the current American productions. Godzilla is the only 60 year old cross generation Movie Star that can connect Grand kids with Grand Parents and the generation in between.

This book was fantastic. The author provides a unique perspective on the specific cultural, historical, and ideological frameworks of Japan, Toho Studios, and even America that influence the making of each Godzilla movie up to Final Wars. While I didn't always agree with some of his more objective commentary on particular films, this book was very well-researched, and provided a superb companion for a chronological viewing of each Godzilla film. I would recommend this book to anyone with even a passing interest in Toho's Godzilla series, as it can only serve to enhance and increase one's enthusiasm for the undisputed King of Monsters.

Most of the book concerns itself with the cultural and business context for each movie, also going into the trends and styles of the major creative people behind the movies. It is about 20% an artistic analysis of the film's themselves. This is a great book for both learning about the history of the Godzilla movies, but also providing some new perspectives on what makes them important and interesting that you won't find from mainstream English language critics or through most fan discussions.

An extremely well written overview of all the Godzilla films (up to Godzilla Final Wars). Kalat has done his research and knows his stuff, but the fan in him shines through.My only complaints with this book are that it contains no photos from any of the movies (not the author's fault, as Toho wanted too much money for the rights), and as a revised, updated edition, the "Millennium" series of movies are covered more quickly.Still a great read for any G-Fan.

This is an amazing book and I am absolutely fascinated by it, from both the standpoint of a film buff as well as a Gojira fan. I certainly hope Mr. Kalat does a follow-up now that G is enjoying a rebirth in Japanese cinema (from Godzilla Millenium to GMK and beyond) and the book itself stops at Godzilla v Destroyah, his supposed "death" in Japan. (The plan was to turn the reins over to Tri-Star in the USA, but since the '98 American Godzilla stunk so very much, fans worldwide convinced Toho to revive it in their own image).Excellent book for both film fan and Godzilla lover. No pictures, no diagrams, no schlock; just great writing and amazing detail.

This is the best book on Godzilla movies I have ever read. The author is incredibly knowledgeable and obviously loves these movies. I highly recommend this book.

I am not a Godzilla fan (I don't dislike them; I am neutral towards them). But this book is amazing even if you don't care about the movies, because like them or not, Godzilla movies are an important part of our modern culture. This book is detailed, interesting, always enlightening, and very often hilarious to read. A great book can be a pleasure to read even for those who would not be interested in the subject. This is such a book.

A tremendous book. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone interested in Godzilla or its history. This is my favorite book on the Godzilla series, and if great for experts and beginniners to the alike.

This is a beautiful book that once completed will make a lovely keepsake to read again and again. The cover isn't "hard cover" per se, but rather it's a soft cover that is somewhat stiffer than usual and has a lovely smooth, matted texture that was a welcome surprise. The combination of writing pages and coloring pages is excellent. I will admit that I sometimes find writing prompts intimidating, and also, the journal is so nice that it felt hard to crack. I determined not to feel like I had to write in any particular order, and I am dating each page when I complete it. And I started with the prompt about water, because I am grateful for clean, warm water every day! So that was a super easy one for me. :) Another tip if you're like me about writing prompts - These prompts sometimes use the language of "what is your favorite" or "what was the best." I suggest changing that language in your mind to "what is one of your favorite" or "what was one of the best" - This changing in wording can take the pressure off of feeling like you have to identify the absolute best or most favorite before you start writing. Other than that, I've found the prompts in this book to be wonderfully written, creative, and varied, and I'm looking forward to the thoughts and writing I know this book will inspire in me this year. Beautiful, beautiful book, and I'm so glad I bought it! <3

Lori Deschene's new gratitude journal is even better than expeected. She has succeeded in creating a permanent volume that you will want to revisit again and again. The prompts are inspiring, and carefully thought out, and the pages to colour will inspire artwork and doodles throughout the rest of the book. There are even a few blank pages provided. I cannot recommend 'Tiny Buddha's Gratitude Journal' highly enough.

I find the prompts on each page boring and redundant after a while. At first I like it , but grew tired as it seems more like an assignment over time and something I began to dread rather than look forward to. It's a personal thing I guess, I would rather free style my gratitude list.

I love this gratitude journal so much. I've been a fan of Tiny Buddha for a while and I had this preordered as soon as I heard about it. It exceeded my expectations. This is a wonderful tool for reflection.

I bought this after discovering Lori's TinyBuddha website and twitter feed, which so often has just the right message for me. This book has really helped me in so many ways. Discovering and focusing on gratitude, of course, and the prompts are fun, helpful, and varied. Ones I'm more used to and more comfortable with are easy, and then those that are less "like me" pull me a little out of my comfort zone, which is also something I need. I recommend this book so highly.

I love Edith Wharton. She wrote critically and sometimes sarcastically about the New York aristocracy that she was part of. Her books are not gripping, action packed page-turners. They are not so much about *what* happens as they are about the individual characters and how they handle whatever is happening given the privileges and limitations afforded them by their social standing. All the things I love about Wharton, I am finding in Fellowes. The only real difference is the time and the setting. Now we are in late 20th Century England instead of late 19th Century New York, but the approach is similar. Edith Lavery reminds me of Lily Bart, trying to figure out who she is and where she belongs. I would not say that this is a book for Downton Abbey fans. This is the author's first novel and it doesn't have the depth of Downton but it is still an enjoyable read and I'm going look for another Fellowes novel soon.

Excellent! JUlain Fellowes is a very wittily bitchy writer, which also means he often surprises with the acuity of his insights. He is also a pretty good storyteller, and he moves things along at a fair old lick. Plus the fact that he seems to give an insiders key to the obscure codes of the aristocratic (if not exactly noble) classes. All the while portraying the same classes as being faintly ridiculous and no more dangerous to the body politic than a group of flat-earthers. How nice to be able to look down on them as we look up to them! Definitely worth reading

I found 'Snobs' a bit hard to get into. The story line isn't all that gripping, and the characters are not all likable. Yes, I guess they are snobs, and about as boring as you could get. What I found irritating to the nth degree was the overuse of foreign language phrases in Italics. There was at least one on nearly every page. Enough already, we get it, and we aren't amused anymore. One other reviewer had it right; this would have been better as a series or a movie.

As a Downton Abbey fan, I just had to try a Julian Fellowes novel. This is his first novel and you will see the mind that created all that brilliant Downton writing. Snobs is a look at the class system in England that will make you laugh and sometimes just shake your head. Great characters and their relationships. I loved it.

I enjoyed this book and read it while on vacation, so I had a lot of free time. The pace is not the fastest, but I liked it a lot. I loved the narrator but the rest of the characters are to (sorry) snobs to appeal to me. Maybe because I am from another country I can't really believe that the British aristocrats continue to live like this! It was interesting to take a look into those places where I will never be welcomed (and where apparently everybody would be rude). There are some humorous observations which I really enjoyed!

Julian Fellowes may, in his most vain moments, consider himself amongst the great writers he clearly loves to be associated with. Unfortunately, he possesses absolutely no understanding of what it means to be a truly decent human being.. The concept is entirely foreign to the very way he views the world. This lack of understanding shows in every piece of his work I've been exposed to. Without this basic knowledge there can be no greatness. All of us don't secretly want to be at the top of the heap patting ourselves on the back for our humanity on the rare occasion when we're not urinating on, while plundering the resources of, those we feel "beneath" us. Please stop insulting those amongst us who don't share your, obviously deeply embedded , world view, Mr. Fellowes.

Is more apropos for the title. Very funny, if a bit repetitive at times, but all in all a jolly good read on a cold, early winter afternoon. Let me be clear, though, you shouldn’t read this book if you dislike the silliness of the British upper classes (this includes aristos and upper middle class). If, however, you get a kick out of social climbing and ineffable ignorance, enjoy! Fellowes has some keen social insights in a Jane Austen-like way, and paints some interesting characterizations while telling a fast moving Cinderella story. Whether you root or not for the heroine to “make it through” or sink back into obscurity, you’ll be glad that you’re not in her shoes. So much work! It was difficult not to think of Kate Middleton and her background as she slide into a social set so far above her middle class, though very well to do, upbringing. She and Edith Lavery even had similar jobs (maybe that’s non-jobs) while they stood by waiting for Prince Charming to come to the point. One hopes Duchess Kate had and has an easier time of it than Edith, though the fun is in the scandal and snobbery!

First and foremost, the author is an excellent writer. Witty repartee, complex sentences, and well-drawn characters abound in this somewhat satiric look at contemporary class distinctions and social climbing in merry old England. It just goes to show one that the more things change, the more things stay the same.When a pretty middle-class blond receives a marriage proposal from a somewhat cloddish Earl, she accepts with alacrity. The question is why? Is it love or is it something else altogether? After they marry, a film company descends upon the Earls ancestral home, as does a certain devilishly handsome leading man, leading to all sorts of marital complications. It also calls for some soul searching.Set against the backdrop of contemporary England, this could just as easily have been set two centuries back, as many of the same considerations still hold sway socially. This is a thoroughly entertaining novel, and a delight to read.

We have a 5 year old son who really enjoys these books. They are short enough to keep his interest, and at their core each is about friendship. So far we have been reading these to him, but I imagine these will be some of the first books he reads on his own.Highly recommended.

From Sam (5 years old): I liked all of the three books. I liked all of the stories, but my favorite one was about the snow. Toad wanted to be in his warm bed. He doesn't want to be cold. Frog wants him to leave home and play in the snow. Toad said Frog was right. It is fun in the snow. Toad didn't notice but he was all alone, and he bonked into a tree and a rock. The sled dived into the snow. Toad went home because bed is better than snow. The next one is The Corner, but that's not my favorite. My favorite was the snow because I love snow. You will like this book if you like snow. Frosty the snowman would also like this book. If you like this chapter, read it.From Mom: Sam is a new reader. He used these books as his lights-on books before bed last night and fell in love with the characters. This morning he brought them downstairs and told me all about the stories he had read on his own. We read through them again, that's how much he enjoyed them the first time. If you have a new reader in the house, these books are a fantastic beginning to a lifelong love of books.

My 2nd grader hated to read, and whined whenever he had to. He read a Frog and Toad story in class and came home and asked if I could get him some. My daughter desperately wanted to read chapter books like her older cousins and this set made the perfect gift to help her do so. The vocabulary is appropriate for a 4, 5, or 6 year old and the story plots are simple and straight forward. Frog and Toad are friends who help each other throughout the books, which subtly sends the right messages about interpersonal relationships. Many parents will probably remember these books from when they were kids, which makes reading at bedtime even more fun. Maybe I'm a bit nostalgic, but I find it soothing to wind down with these stories rather than yelling at swiper or watching psychedelic alien dancers jump around on TV.

Wow, we love these books. The stories are very simple and short. We read them to our 4 year old as bedtime stories. There is one story that contains the line, "my best friend is trying to kill me." It's supposed to funny, but I'd rather not have references to killing in a book for kids. Otherwise, we've been cycling through these 3 books at bedtime for 2 months and my daughter is not losing interest yet. Mommy and daddy don't mind reading them either, which is not always the case.

One thing to note before you consider your purchase is that Que has two books covering the Galaxy S5. In addition to this book, they also have a more advanced title called My Samsung Galaxy S5. That title provides a more advanced look at the S5 with topics such as transferring files between your computer and your phone, synchronizing your data, converting DVD videos for playback on the phone, using advanced camera and video recording options, powering other devices, and troubleshooting. With that said, My Samsung Galaxy S5 for Seniors is an excellent beginner's guide to the S5. The books starts with the very basics about how to get started using the S5.The book then progresses to information about using the S5 as a phone to make calls, configure call settings, save contacts, use voicemail, etc. You'll also learn how to use email (via Gmail), access the Internet, use the Calendar, and access text messaging. Later chapters explain how to configure and secure your phone, how to find and install more apps via Google Play and the Amazon Apps stores, as well as how to use the camera to take pictures and videos.The book is very well designed with clear, numbered instructions for each task as well as full-color pictures that are labeled with the various step numbers so you know exactly how to follow along. As I mentioned earlier, what you won't find here is more advanced information or tips and tricks for more experienced users. I,m very tech challenged and I found this book great, because I had to do this on my own. I needed to read the chapter, look at the phone and the do it while referencing the book again.

This book is printed on good quality, thick paper. The pictures are excellent! It has an EXCELLENT INDEX in the back starting with page 521 thru page 543 for ready referencing ALL of its quality contents. I am VERY pleased with this book! We like it so well that we will be ordering it again for a 2nd copy for my wife to use as we study it together. It has a wealth of excellent information to help seniors that are new to the technological world of smart phones. This book is a real WINNER, and I most definitely can recommend it with a FIVE STAR RATING.

I hate this book! I must be exceptionally stupid, but I just cannot understand anything. I did graduate college Summa (albeit many years ago!) but this is just defeating me. It's too expensive to mail back. I will enjoy ripping out every page and burning it!!! Does anyone know of a book (I didn't get the manual - it is an old phone given to me) that is EASY for an old 76-year old stupid grandmother to understand? I'm in tears.

Bought this book for my mom, who is new to a smartphone (though she is quite literate with Windows). I'm usually her tech support person, but since I don't live nearby and don't have an Android phone, I bought this book for her. She loves all the pictures in it and says it is very clear. She was able to pick things she wanted to learn at her leisure and didn't feel pressured to pick it up quickly like she might if someone was showing her. Rather than calling me for support, she's texted me to tell me (or show me) what she's learned. This book has made the transition easy for her.I can't comment on the content because I actually haven't seen the book, but other reviews led me to believe that all the pictures would make it fun to learn without being long-winded/confusing/condescending. But I can tell you that if your mom or dad just got a Samsung Galaxy S5 and isn't exactly sure what to do next, I highly recommend this book.

My parents are learning a lot

A lot of detail, but very thorough. Has shortened my learning curve and instructed a number of features that I did not previously know how to use.Recommend the book for anyone needing more thorough instruction on using the Galaxy S5... not just seniors.
