About the Author

Len Lichtblau, a native of New York City, received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology in 1981 at the University of Minnesota. He is currently a Clinical Associate Professor in the School of Nursing and the College of Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Lichtblau has taught pharmacology and physiology to a wide range of health care professionals including, nursing, pharmacy, medical, dental, public health and veterinary students for over three decades. He is a consultant to the Board of Medical Practice in the state of Minnesota on prescription drug abuse and on drugs acting on the nervous system. Dr. Lichtblau is a pioneer in the field of online health care education.

Dr. Lictblau's book is an answer to my prayers! As a recent graduate of an MSN program for psychiatric advanced practice nurses I needed something to help me study for the boards. I have always been intimidated by neurobiology and thought "how am I ever going to learn this stuff?" Well I found that I learned about the brain, the neurotransmitters, the dopamine pathways, the CYP 450 system, the different mental disorders, the meds and was able to "put it all together" as the good Doctor likes to say in his book. I am very confident now, that I will pass. Thank you Dr. Lictblau for this valuable resource. I recommend it highly for anyone that needs to understand neurobiology and must prove that knowledge.

This book cuts straight thru the work of Stahl and others to offer understandable language that links neurotransmitters and psychopharmacology in understanding treatment for patients. I highly reccomend this book to anyone trying to wrap their arms around the vast subject of psychopharmacology. I can only hope the author will take up the equal challenge to present the CYP 450 system in equally understandable language.

This is a great review text - it goes over anatomy and physiology, brain structure and neurotransmitter pathways, covers major disorders and their treatment, and gives a nice summary of most drugs and how they work. It's a thin, fairly brief book, so it wouldn't be enough alone, but it's a great supplement to a more in-depth textbook. I will continue to keep it in my office as a quick reference.

I am a preceptor for ARNP students and this is the book that I often recommend. It really breaks down the psychopharmacology concepts in an easy-to-understand way. I have found that it is helpful clinically as well as in their psychopharm class. This book helps make this level of knowledge accessible and understandable.

This book is more like a joke, a classic example of cut and paste authors writing for a highly specialized topic with no technical weight. It never should be used for computer science students (unless the instructor himself has no clue about the subject). This book is for people with no formal training who want to learn some random buzzwords.

I wish I could count the times I've seen second and third rounds of development occur because the first round produced a working version of a product the customer didn't want. With all of the emphasis lately on rapid development, especially now that the web has everyone working on "internet time", there has been a noticeable lack of discussion on ensuring the software produced fits the needs of the customer and is of reasonable quality. Rakitin addresses these issues and more in this book. As the title indicates, he concentrates on Verification ("are we building the product right?") and Validation ("are we building the right product?"). However, the subtitle to the work "A Practitioner's Guide" provides much more insight into the actual scope of this work. In the discussion of software inspection meetings, for example, Rakitin give guidelines regarding not only the mechanics of who should attend and when materials should be distributed but he also provides insight into what to expect as a moderator and how much should be expected to be accomplished in the meetings themselves. There are a number of statements in the book that begin "Experience has shown..." Rakitin's extensive experience has manifested itself throughout the book transforming the dry, checklist-like discussions found in so many other books into discussions about how people work and communicate with each other. This isn't to say there couldn't be more. Although what's presented is very good, there are points in the book where I found myself wishing for additional discussion. Perhaps in future editions Rakitin will be able to expand upon, say, requirements collection or configuration management. There are also things that could be updated if the book were to have a revision. For example, a brief discussion on OO methodologies is provided where Fusion from HP is outlined. This could obviously be expanded to cover the Rational Unified Process, Rational's effort to provide UML with "meat" the modeling language alone could not have. As Deming observed and Rakitin noted, "The quality of a product is directly related to the quality of the process used to create it." To this end, Rakitin attempts to provide the reader with ready-made tools, checklists, outlines, and forms to aid them in the maturation of their software engineering department. These items, which appear in approximately 80 pages of appendices, give the reader a variety of starting places for just such an initiative. Brooks said "no silver bullet" and he was right. Quality software is possible only through a methodical, rational, and scientific approach. Rakitin goes a long way towards that in this work. I highly recommend it.

Software Verification and Validation by Steven R. Rakitin. A practical book by a practical author, presenting the steps required to set up a formal and complete Verification and Validation program for software production. Mr. Rakitin sprinkles pertinent quotations throughout the book to support his case that software quality programs (detection) cost less than simply releasing a "buggy" program to your Customers. The author also teaches the lessons of this book at IEEE lectures; I attended one in March 1998. At these lectures, the author fleshes out and makes more interesting many of the points made in his book. As an ASQ Certified Software Engineer, S. Rakitin has the credentials to expound on many aspects of quality programs set up to deal effectively with the major & crucial issue of the lack of software quality today. There are 169 pages of text, describing a good program, but the author has also included some 87 pages of appendices (from "A" to "H") which give you a cook book or recipe approach to different aspects of software quality. The author gives you good leads to other sources of information on software quality. The book would profit from another good editorial review, reducing the wordiness in some chapters and tying the whole story all together. For example, Rakitin continuously uses "SEI" which (as far as I can see) is not defined in his book. SEI = Software Engineering Institute. In Chapter 4, the author attempts to establish a cost/benefit justification for implementing a software quality program, but misses and then, later, on page 90 (Chapter 7), he DOES lists the pertinent reasons as, "...lower support costs, ... fewer maintenance releases, ... higher customer satisfaction and, as a result, increased sales". An astute editor would have melded all of this together. Overall, this book is directed at the practitioner, whether a hardware quality engineer required to set up a software quality program, or a novice who has the same task. It is a practical book, generally well written,

I am grateful for this book. To me, Volf writes and thinks like the Apostle Paul -- very logical, one step at a time, explaining in a really concrete and convincing way the truth about how God gives and forgives - and in the process revealing more about the nature of our God. The actions of Christ revealed in the Bible, and later writings by Christian authors like C.S. Lewis, are persuasive that the truth of God and the gospel of Jesus Christ are mysterious but not vague or fuzzy. Volf's ideas follow in that vein -- you can come away with a more solid/dependable understanding of who Christ is and what is pleasing to him from reading this book. Plenty of stories from "real life" to additionally ground the discussion. Eye-opening, satisfying, worth the read.

In ShortThis is a book that many readers will enjoy "living with." Volf's stated purpose for the book is to encapsulate the whole of Christian living within two axiomatic concepts. In other words, what does Christianity really look like when it is lived in a contemporary life? Often, in eager anticipation of their thoughts on the book, I'll ask how it is going. They always reply, "It is so good, but I can only get so far before I have to put it down and reflect on it." In this sense, this book is not only a wonderful resource for those that want to practice generosity or forgiveness, but it might just be the kind of reading experience that drives self-reflection in order to help those who struggle with selfish ambition or unforgiving hearts break those chains of bondage.At LengthIn Volf's own words, the book does four things. First, it is an examination of whether the landscape of Christian perspective can appropriately be viewed through the lens of giving and forgiving. Honestly, while some will have no issue with such a conceptualization, I think there will be many others that will not be ale to fit all of their theological identity under both of these concepts - especially, not the way that Volf visualizes forgiving.Second, the book is an interpretation of Paul's theology. This, however, is likely to be a perspective that is widely accessible and acceptable. He confesses that he has not taken any scholarly stance, referencing the recent fighting going on over Pauline discourse (think N.T. Wright and John Piper). It turns out, that this kind of spiritual rumination over Paul may be much needed medicine for the soul. Honestly, though, I'd be surprised if those unfamiliar with theological discourse are not quite able to appreciate the nuanced way that Volf interacts with the primary source.Third, we get a glimpse into Volf's academic work on Martin Luther. At every turn in the book, he interacts with Luther on important points of Protestant theology; namely, Luther's time honored perspectives on grace and faith are explained in the context of practical Christian living. I don't want to spoil any of the content, but much of Volf's interaction with Luther has the same freshness that his atypical approach to Pauline theology has. The book is a beautiful demonstration of how deeply careful theological inquiry can impact our every day lives.Finally, the book was selected by the Archbishop of Canterbury to be used as the church's official Lenten reflection in 2006. The spiritual formation facet of the book is perhaps best attested to by the fact that I have seen several friends carrying this book around with their Bibles for weeks on end. The book deals with not only the deep things of faith, but also the deep things of life - which, ironically, are not concomitant in Christian writing often enough.In my estimation, the greatest value of this book is the practical advice it provides on giving and forgiving as spiritual disciplines within the Christian life. I have not seen many other books with a straightforward process for giving and forgiving. Volf provides clearly defined and well thought out processes for each. Consequently, the careful reader can come away with a list of things detailing what pure giving and true forgiveness really look like, as well as a process for disciplining oneself into becoming that kind of pure giver and true forgiver.I must also confess, though, that there are stories in this book, the stories of real people and real hurt, that tore at my heart. It is, at times, difficult to read, especially if you tend to put yourself in the place of the people in the stories you read. Not once do you read Volf using a petty or trite situation as an affirmation of his points. The issues he deals with are the real issues of humanity, the gut-wrenching issues - and he interacts with them in courage and a true sense of compassion. There is no "feel good" theology going on here.Perhaps the greatest praise I can give any book, I can give Free of Charge with out qualification. I will come back to this book again. It is worth reading over and over.

I can surely say the words resonated with me very deeply.From the perspective of a layman Christian, this book helped me go further deep in to my own heart and helped me understand it better. Also, it seemed as if this book is a mirror which showed what my heart was made of.This book will also change you how you behave in relating to others ... This book is a must read regardless of who you are, if you want to see Christ more deeply. God bless us and heal us.

There are very few books that I whole-heartedly recommend, but Miraslov Volf's Free of Charge: Giving and Forgiving in a Culture Stripped of Grace is one I would not only recommend, I would encourage people of all faiths and even those without to read.Volf is a professor of theology at Yale Divinity School, but this is not an intimidating read. Each of the two sections, giving and forgiving, begins with discussing how God does each. He reminds us that God is neither a negotiator nor a Santa Claus. God gives because that is His nature, and He delights in giving to us so that He can also give through us. He uses the visual of God pouring gifts out to us and makes the point that the flow of giving was never intended to stop there...it should flow through us and on to those around us, who in turn give to those around them, and all of it flows around and then back to us to begin again. He often refers to the necessity of living within a giving community of givers (the body of Christ), not only so that we encourage one another in the grace of giving but so that we pour those gifts onto others outside the body so that they, too, will come to know God through us. This picture is one that has me captivated. Certainly it is of the ideal...the one that God intended and not the one that we as sinful humans are able to create perfectly...but the ideal is the goal.The second half of the book deals with forgiving, and for me there were ideas here that might be called transforming. I was especially impressed with his discussion of the relationship between forgiving and repentance.I can not recommend this book highly enough. It is not expensive and not so "theological" that those of us without a degree in theology can't understand it.

Relaxing into great sex as an older man with medical problems who can talk about anything without being upset with a partner who is happy and can do the same is a beautiful conscept. And even though I've read that before, his brilliant ease with words transformed that insight into an epiphany. Really, he takes a lot of the pressure off sex by showing the ways we've added pressure to something that only has the meaning we decide to give it. So this book truly lives up to its title and promise of sexual intelligence. I highly recommend this book, even if you've read tons of them on sex and relationships. Definitely a fresh, brilliant voice on the topic and I'm looking forward to the Beyond Orgasm book.

This book seems like common sense when reading it, but it completely breaks down all the stress, shame, tensions, etc that tends to follow sex around. This is a great book for anyone who has any kind of negative feelings around sex or is not enjoying sex. It puts sex in its proper place in our lives and gives it the importance it deserves. Dr. Klein, at the same time, takes apart the importance we place on sex and puts it in a place where it can be just as important as we think it should be, just in a very different light. As a bandsman, horseman, and living history Cavalry trumpeter, I was immediately drawn to this book when I saw its title. I have played bugle calls and bugle marches while mounted for parades and other events. It is a unique experience and is rarely seen in the United States since the 1940s when the horse Cavalry was dismounted. However, you can go to Youtube and see music videos of British, French, and other country’s mounted bands. Trooper Gleason—a member of the U.S. Cavalry Association—has researched, in great depth, and authored a tremendous reference book that takes the reader back thousands of years to when animals, such as horses and elephants, their riders and horns were combined to more effectively provide command, control, and motivation of soldiers during both war and peace. He further addresses the traditions, such as kettledrums, that countries, rulers, and the mounted bands established, and how these traditions migrated from the Middle East and Europe to literally all parts of the world. He details the evolution of instruments and instrumentation; music and composers; training of horses and riders; transporting horses, equipment, and musicians; performances; and band directors/leaders. For the United States, the first mounted musicians were company trumpeters serving in Revolutionary War units. From then until the end of World War II there is a rich history of the Army, National Guard, and militia mounted bands, especially during the 1920s and 1930s. Bandsmen were soldiers first, with the same duties and training requirements as the other soldiers in their regiments. As bandsmen, they also spent many hours practicing then providing music for both military and community events. Frequently the company/troop trumpeters were added to enhance the band’s musical performances. The book is a researcher’s “god-send.” It is extensively footnoted with details and references. The bibliography is over two-dozen pages and includes articles; books; laws, procedures, regulations, and other official documents; newspapers, newsletters, and programs; websites; discography; correspondence; and interviews. And, the index is equally detailed with almost twenty pages. A nice Regency romance with two likeable characters in the H/h. The fact that the two of them were totally immersed in the history of ancient Egypt - a hot nerd and a hot nerdette - made the story sweet and sexy.While there was some intrigue in Gabriel and Rebecca's story, I was rather lost in the reveal about Gabriel's 'basement', and why he was so connected to it. He just seemed a bit TOO detached from society, when he really didn't have anything catastrophic in his life to make him withdraw. If anything, Rebecca's life and past history would lead more to becoming a hermit; even though she was alone and felt lonely most of the time, her personality was a lot more open and friendly than Gabriel's.Still - I liked this book. I was wavering between 3.5 and 4, so a weak 4.

Rebecca believes she is cursed and asks Gabriel Stone to help her. Gabriel believes she is a charlatan and questions her about her knowledge of Egypt. He is stunned to find out that she's not a fraud but the illegitimate daughter of Lord Welborn his old mentor. Someone is trying to scare Rebecca and it's not just her brother. A wonderful read with a beautiful ending!!

I don't give many five star reviews, but this novel deserves them. Very likeable H and h, who are perfect for each other. A good plot and a fast, enjoyable read. I look forward to reading Adele's other works.

This was not the best book in this series but I did like Gabriel and Rebecca. I guess the problem I had with it was there was no "falling" in love. I think after four days she was head over heels in love. Their relationship went from not liking each other to wham! We're in love! I agree with some previous readers that Gabriel's problem was not so severe that it should have caused him to be reclusive. Also, a minor thing, but how did he become so bronze skinned if he never came out of his cellar? The story also didn't really explain how Rebecca's life with her mom and dad was a "real" family. How much time did he actually spend with them as opposed to spending time with his other family? There were just too many unanswered questions and it needed more character detail to give it five stars.

Decidedly strong, intelligent and independent Rebecca Linwood runs a museum in London. Gabriel Stone, an Egyptian scholar, prefers being a recluse. Gabriel, irritated at being "forced" to discuss with Miss Linwood the ridiculous possibility of a curse at her museum, does so with arrogance and rudeness. And thus starts the action of this endearing and entertaining historical romance. The characters feel real, the setting spot on, the plot very much historical romance genre and the characters are up to the challenges they face with just enough suspense to lend tension to the story. A fine afternoon enjoyment. Be aware, some sexuality but not explicit/erotic.

Historical romances are a guilty pleasure, so stumbling upon a new author is always exciting. A Curse of the Heart was a fun read. The characters Rebecca and Gabriel were likeable and I like how Clee has them interact. Although the ultimate ending is predictable, there are still details that lead you guessing until they occur. My only complaint is although it's set in a specific time period, the overall story (for the most part) could really occur in any time period. There wasn't an overwhelming amount of detail or events to really cement it to a particular era. But a fun read and an author who's other books I look forward to reading.

Gabriel and Rebecca had shown up as peripheral characters in another Adele Clee novel, and they intrigued me enough that I wanted to read their story. Enjoyed it tremendously. I can usually spot the villain as well as their motivation early on in a book, but this one caught me by surprise. Good plot, great and complex characters. Love reading her books.

Brought together by their fascination of Egypt, Rebecca and Gabriel learns to let go of their pasts and start looking to the future. The characters from this book has appeared in other of AC book, they are different but strong and vulnerable at the same time. It’s an enjoyable story with a hea. Would have liked en epilogue!
