Gr 6–10—Irena Sendler, a righteous Gentile who rescued approximately 2,500 Jewish children in the Warsaw ghetto, is the focus of this volume. Sendler's father, a Catholic doctor who treated Jews others turned away, grew up speaking Yiddish with close Jewish friends. Her senior role at a government agency positioned her to offer help following the 1939 Nazi invasion of Poland. Sendler and an inner circle of trusted friends, Jewish and Christian alike, used creative means to spirit Jewish children away to safety in orphanages and foster homes. Tortured by the Nazis, she gave up no secrets, keeping the children and her network safe. While the book is strong on general historical context, featuring descriptions of socioeconomic divisions among Jews in occupied Warsaw, it suffers from the wartime loss of direct historical evidence. Many of the individuals portrayed—Sendler included—do not feel fully fleshed out, making the narrative somewhat confusing and lessening the emotional impact. This is a story better suited to shorter treatments, such as Marcia Vaughan's Irena's Jars of Secrets. More readable, engaging volumes on similar individuals exist, such as Irene Gut Opdyke's In My Hands and Alison Leslie Gold's A Special Fate. Our granddaughter's Language Arts teacher gave the class a reading assignment. This book was on the list and while someone else picked this one, our girl was very disappointed. I felt it was worth buying to continue her education and love of reading. It did not disappoint us. It made a horrific time in history come alive for her and opened doors to communicate and ask questions. I highly recommend this book. Very well written.

This book should be mandatory reading for everyone! Although this was adapted by Mary Cronk Farrell for young readers, I was quickly entranced and read it in a day. I think it also has a lesson we all need to be refreshed on, the horrific atrocities we do to those who are different from us. It will make you sad, cry, sad, and sick over the senseless cruelty, but you will feel hope when you read of the courage of Irena and her friends. I highly recommend this well written and thought provoking book for all ages!

When a book captures my interest I usually finish it in short order. Not so with this Young Readers Edition of Irena’s Children. I had to read this one in segments, allowing myself breaks to breathe fresh air and seek sunshine after being immersed in the darkness that shrouded Warsaw, Poland during World War II. I’ve read other books about the Nazi’s horrendous ethnic cleansing campaign, but I think like many readers I chose to picture the victims as adults, suppressing the fact that the children of those adults faced the same fate. That isn’t possible with Irena’s Children. Never gratuitous in its depictions, it nevertheless doesn’t shy from portraying the realities of what was at stake for those seen as undesirable, as less than human. Nor does it soften the extreme danger Irena and everyone in her network faced by choosing to risk their lives to save the lives of others. Humanity snatching victory from inhumanity.So who should read this Young Reader’s version? Any and all adults, especially those parents and teachers whose children will be reading it. And as for those children reading it, I think it best suited to readers 12+ due to the intense nature of the subject matter. It’s definitely a book that should be discussed and the historical background explored for a fuller understanding of its topic.Note: I received a copy of this book from the author, Mary Cronk Farrell. Mary is also a friend of mine, but that in no way influenced my review. Mary always has and always will tackle hard topics with skill and finesse.

This true account of Irena Sendler and her friends in Poland warmed my heart and I was astounded by their bravery! Irena and her friends helped save Jewish families during World War II by placing themselves in grave danger, hiding and sneaking children to safety. This is a magnificent story of heroism that affected thousands of Jewish children and has since affected generations of families. This book needs to be read to get the full extent of what true courage Irena Sendler embodies and the bravery it took to save innocent children during the Holocaust! 4 stars.

A woman who risked everything to save Jewish children she didn’t even know from the brutality of the Nazi’s in Poland during WWII. The things she saw happening around her frightened her, but she also became angry. She joined others in secret meetings that grew into a network of brave people that helped save hundreds of infants and children from certain death.The brutalities and atrocities of the Nazi invasion of Poland have been widely documented. This book takes the reader into the burning buildings, the disease infested ghettos and in the brutal prisons of Poland. Irena and her group of brave, everyday heroes suffered greatly for their acts. Some lost their lives, some were arrested and tortured and others lost everything they had, but all of them worked tirelessly to save just one more child every moment of every day.Through it all, Irena encouraged, helped and understood when others didn’t have the energy to go on. She kept lists of the children so that one day they could possibly be reunited with their families. If that wasn’t possible at least they would know their names and Jewish heritage and the love and sacrifice of the families that hid them and raised them as their own.Irena lived through all of the danger, uncertainty and brutality she suffered to be reunited with some of “her children” in the 1980’s. She died peacefully in 2008 at the age of 98. Countless survived because of Irena and the network of others devoted to Irena’s children no matter what the cost.This book was an amazing story of triumph over one of the worst things that happened in world history. It is told in story form with information from archives, historical sources, Tilar Mazzeo’s personal knowledge, personal interviews, historical photos (many included), maps, books and Mazzeo’s original book.I absolutely enjoyed this book from the standpoint of history, WWII and the courage of people bringing hope to the youngest members of a nation in situations that seemed hopeless. It is not easy to read about the torture, pain and death of the group of innocent people. But not reading about it doesn’t make it go away. It is a painful part of history that needs never to be forgotten.This is the young reader edition, based upon Mazzeo’s original book, and has been adapted by Mary Cronk Farrell. There is no way to “tone down” the events discussed in the book. The language may be an easier form for young readers, but it is still about a time a group of people were singled out and methodically murdered, maimed and tortured just because they were Jewish. It was a scary and difficult time for adults and children alike.If they are interested in history, I would highly recommend Irena’s Children. They may have questions that would require further discussion. Adults should read this also. While it is the story of undeniable horrors, it is the story of hope and the triumph of human spirit that encourages all of us to help one another and to make the world a better place no matter who we are or where we live. The story is, of course, inspiring, frightening, and heart-rending all in one book. One of my 7th grade students recommended it to me and I am glad she did. My only quibble is poor editing. Multiple errors hurt the Scholastic edition of the book. "Women" and "woman" are misused a couple of times. The word "Nazis" seems randomly punctuated with an apostrophe with no rhyme or reason. These errors detract from the impact of the book for a reader like myself, though they can never detract from Irena Sendler's courage and strength.

They get some very interesting reactions to their visits and learn some surprising news as well.A journalist named Denis Botting beards Melissa outside her mother's door and intimates that he knows a great deal about the local area and its people and could help with her inquiries. Mel reluctantly and suspiciously agrees to work with him.Melissa begins to put the pieces together; investigating in spite of the fact that DI Adair does not want her to. Sylvia continues to act very strange. Her moods are all over the place. She says something and then denies she ever said it. She urges her mother to see a doctor.In a sudden epiphany, Mel knows who committed the murders. DI Adair isn't interested.I was surprised at the identity of the killer, but the motive was as old as the hills.This is perhaps my favorite Melissa Craig book so far. While it was a departure from her “village” murders, it held my interest and I truly enjoyed it. The writing is very good and the characters likable. I have a little trouble with Mel's naivete – her being a writer of detective fiction, one would think...well. DI Adair was deplorably incompetent. She wanted an easy answer and wouldn't listen at all to her partner. I love that Melissa has finally found a solid love interest!I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for forwarding to me a copy of this absolutely great book for me to read, enjoy and review.

Melissa is tasked by her mother to find the murderer of her father, much to the ire of DI Adair, the young police detective inspector in charge of the murder case.Rowlands writes a tight, fast tale, with a clean, easily followed story line and realistic characters. Her descriptive passages take you to spring in England. She is an author to follow. If cozies aren’t your cup of tea, pick this book up, you’re sure to fall in love with Melissa as she tries to solve her father’s murder, and you might even be tempted to find book one in the series.

This can be read as a stand-alone. I like the change in location for this book from the others in the series. This time, Melissa is contacted by her estranged mother, only to learn that her mother is suspected of killing her father. After almost 30 years without contact, Melissa returns to her home town and tries to help, while dealing with lots and lots of emotional challenges. Finding out about her parents’ lives and watching her interactions with her mother makes this an interesting addition to this series. I recommend this book.

She adeptly places the shark in our evolutionary timeline (spoiler: they've been around a VERY long time) and then proceeds with a cause-and-effect journey that should easily leave your head spinning. Who realized just how important sharks truly are to life on planet Earth?!This is a great book for expanding a child's scientific vocabulary (complete with a Glossary in the back) and for clearly and concisely explaining to everyone the true value of creatures of sea and land, from large to small. There are even some great tips on what you can do today to start turning the tide on shark endangerment. I can't recommend this book enough as a must-have addition to any child's library (and to any personal or public library, as well)!

This book has it all: a great message about caring for our oceans, a positive message about sharks (something I wish I'd read more about as a kid), beautiful and creative illustrations that kids will love, and best of all - scientifically accurate! Well researched and well presented for little kids and big kids - easy to get lost in the pictures for little kids, easy information for bigger kids to latch on to and learn. This book will be the inspiration of future marine biologists. You'll do a service to your kids or classroom if you introduce them to this book!

I have several Holy Bibles and this is one of the most well made and beautiful ones I own, it is a good size thick Bible and not very light to carry but I Love it!I like the photos pictures and interesting facts they are nice to have.The authors notes for study are very interesting, different scholars have different opinions, I form my own beliefs with the Holy Spirits guidance, I enjoy different views from different scholars.So glad I purchased this lovely edition of the King James, i would have expected to pay much more for such a quality Bible!I definitely recommend this Holy Bible for any true Christian!

I've been taking classes from bible study groups, but they tend to only teach what benefits them into recruiting me to their specific church. I just want to study the bible and this does the job.

Received a defective copy - Very disappointed as this was meant to be a gift. Several of the pages in the back were folded over and bound into the center which harmed the integrity of the binding. Also, these pages have extra material at the edges with odd printing on them. Will be returning.

I bought this as a secular person looking to learn a bit more about religion, so I'm hesitant to give this study bible a "bad" review. This study bible is geared towards conservative Christians, with footnotes in Genesis explaining why this passage shows why evolution is impossible, that Moses wrote the first four books of the Old Testament, that sort of thing. I was after something more academic, so I ended up returning this bible and buying a normal KJV Bible paired with the Oxford Study Bible.The book itself is very well laid out, has a lot of great looking photos and illustrations, and the leather cover and gilded pages look great.

Love this study bible! It has deepened my understanding of scripture and is helping me grow as a Christian.

I loved the detail the drawings and paintings. The text was well covered and explained. It had a nice soft feel to it and I was proude to give it as a gift.

This mystery had an excellent and intricate plot. I saw it coming from afar (and I’m not good at figuring out “whodunnit”) but that didn’t matter because I HAD to see how the murderer pulled it off. The ending included some VERY implausible details but I could forgive those. What really was a major irritant throughout this book was the characters. They weren’t attractive, believable, interesting, well developed or plausible. Unfortunately, I won’t be reading another book by this author.

I was really enjoying this book. I liked the characters, the writing was good, and the pace kept me interested. But as the plot moves along, it gets more and more implausible, to the point where I actually found myself groaning out loud. What I am saying is that if you want a book that stretches the imagination, this is for you. I guess I prefer mysteries where I can actually conceive of someone in real life doing what the author has conjured up. At the end of this book, I just sat there saying.... seriously!?!!

DCI Craig Gillard never got over his first love, Liz, the beautiful girl from the posh school who broke his heart when she went up to Cambridge and then married a dashing fellow student. Thirty years later, he's had a failed marriage and a solid but unremarkable career in a police force tarnished by the unsolved death of a teenage delinquent who claimed to have been systematically abused. Liz's husband, Martin Kinght, now a prominent criminologist, has been the police's fiercest critic, so when she is reported missing, he is the obvious and rather welcome suspect. Despite the actual absence of a body in the marsh, the forensic evidence of murder is overwhelming, and with Martin having absconded, Craig and his team doggedly follow every lead, desperately hoping to bring her justice.I enjoyed this despite finding Craig's treatment of women deeply off-putting - appraising every female only in terms of her attractiveness, leading the ones who fancy him on and messing them around. He also misses some fairly obvious clues, I suppose he's just blinded my his unending love.The twist here was so well signposted that I spent most of the book hoping to be proved wrong, but this didn't actually spoil it for me. The Tagline about " a shocking twist you won't see coming" is nonsense, at least for someone who reads much in this genre.The detailed procedural aspects were well done, and the pacing kept me interested.There were a couple of good female characters apart from silly girly Sam, I particularly liked the hard as nails ACC with the mysterious jar on her desk...I now look forward to the next book.

I enjoyed the intricate primary plot which was skillfully interwoven with a secondary plot to create a multilayered storyline. The secondary plot was relevant and realistic, and carried the storyline when the primary investigation stalled and stuttered to a stop, before new information surfaced.DCI Craig Gillard was not very likable, and I could not believe his thirty-year obsession with a socially and educationally superior girl he’d dated for less than two months when he was a teenager. I liked DS Claire Mulholland—an intelligent and tough detective—who deserved her promotion.I read a lot of crime mysteries, so I guessed the culprit and twist at the 35%—but for the wrong reasons. Bravo, Mr. Louth! By 50% mark, I knew whodunnit but that didn’t matter, because I wanted to find out how it was done. I also suspected a culprit in the parallel case, but I also had his motive wrong—which was a nice, twisty surprise. Another bravo!I was disappointed with the last 25% or so of the book when events and explanations seemed unbelievable, given the sociopathic culprit’s intellect and planning.3.5 stars bumped up to 4 stars because I liked the writing.

My first book by this author and I was so delighted in this mystery. How an author can put all these characters and twists and turns, and in the end all come together is amazing. I thought I had a clue to what might be happening by the middle of the book and without giving it away, I was correct at the end. The story itself was wonderful and held many ‘branches’ like a huge live oak! So many details, so many twirls, it held me since I HAD to know how I ended. Other than that, I would have stopped. There were too many names, too many useless details about these seldom mentioned characters in other parts of the book that I felt my time was wasted. Yet the story was so compelling, I do hope you don’t let my need for constant entertainment keep you from enjoying this story. The main, missing character was thoroughly thought of and expressed in the most interesting way, and her tumultuous family kept me needing to know more.Enjoy, it’s a long read!

I had trouble deciding how to rate this story. I didn’t love it. I never felt close to the characters; however, having said that, It is a well written police procedural and easy to read including well researched, particularly methods and restrictions. I have already purchase the next in the series. I won’t give up on the protagonist until after that. I recommend the book and never considered less than a 4 star.

Lots of everything in this novel! The police procedural were very detailed so I could understand how it's all done especially in great Britain my being a U.S.citizen. This story was very unexpected except you do know what's going on about three fourths of the way though. Then it becomes very exciting! I totally ended it! Next will read Bite! Thank you for writing such an excellent read! cb
